I have played four hours so far and I am really happy with the game.
The characters, which is the most important thing to me, are interesting and likeable and the conversations I have had with them felt a lot more natural than they did in the original trilogy.
I have only just gotten to the second planet because I took my time with the first mission and looked around a lot and also did a few side-missions on the Nexus and talked to a bunch of NPCs. The story so far seems interesting.
Gameplay is fun and feels good, but I had to get used to it a bit. I still haven't really figured out how all the research and crafting stuff works, but I am sure I will find out with a bit more time. Exploring the area in the first mission was really fun, although I got a bit confused with the map at first.
The character graphics and animations aren't astonishing, but I don't think they are bad either. The environment looks fantastic in my opinion. I haven't played any recent character focused video games from the last 3 years though, so maybe I am still too used to older graphics.
I personally don't care much about the character creator because I always played as default Shepard and will play as default Ryder here too.
The only thing I really don't like about the game so far are the "travel times" between planets on the galaxy map. While they are visually stunning, they take too much time. I know that the game might have to render the high resolution images of the planets first, but it is still a bit annoying.

So here is a question. Is the writing played straight, as in the over the top stuff is done on purpose, or is it done as a part of a sarcastic edge to the characters? Liam is light-hearted. Casual Ryder is hilarious. I am not sure what that means. Let me put it this way. Is the light-heartedness and hilarity contrast seriously to the world around it, or is it the standard buffy/firefly style banter writing we tend to see now a days?

My early impressions are thus... Now the giant bomb stream of the singleplayer that i watched earlier basically made this a "wait till its cheap" buy for me. Its basically confirmed my worst fears, Andromeda is DA:I in space, and that is just a complete non-starter for me. Watching it i just couldnt shake the impression of just how dull, contrived, dumb and repetitive, how lacklustre, how lacking in any sense of style, of any real science fiction chops etc the whole affair looked and felt. The awful, cringey, tweeny, average internet fan fiction level, unatural sounding dialogue and piss poor writing stood out to me like a stubbed pinky toe as well. Not to mention the dead eyes... Its unbelivable. This is a supposed triple A game being released in 2017 ffs.
Like what the heck happened?. I mean 200 developers, 3 teams (Montreal, Edmonton & Austin), over $40 million dollars, decades worth of "experience", 5 years development time (and a delay), looked to the Witcher 3 & Mass Effect 2 as inspiration etc etc...yet still somehow the game has come out like this?. A complete mess in so many areas. Its literally ridiculous. Makes you wonder what were the Montreal team doing for those 5 years exactly?. Clearly they werent developing the game(and from what ive heard BioWare Montreal were screwing the project up royall, and about a year ago BioWare Edmonton had to step in and too k control back to fix it up asap). Its amazing how inept Bioware are nowadays. I guess Mass Effect Andromeda is what happens when all the people and all the talent who actually know what they're doing leave the company/and or the project. Leaving only bottom of the barrel, Z-list hacks and inexperienced interns to carry on with making the game. It shows, boy does it show in the final product we're getting here. So much squandered potential once again with Mass Effect, makes me sad.

I played it to the very end of this trial origin edition and I had so much fun actually... Don't know why people are so sceptical.

How different is this game in contrast to Me3? Very! I do not play a lot of AAA games. I am quite blown away. ME3 will feel old and stale after this. And the opening is much better. ME3 had such a weak opening.

No spoilers but the opening is just way too slow paced, I was actually getting bored. and it is suffering from many games suffer in an open world environment. Lots of space making it easy to get lost and nothing to really do. Don`t like the scanning tool as I feel that I have to keep switching from scanning to weapons to walking and back to scanning as I may miss something. I have the same complaint about open world games. Usually its "Go anywhere, do nothing in particular". Like god bless Fast travel so I can skip the barren open world and get straight to the mission. Doesn't help that there's usually not much in the way of scenery in open world games, either.

From what I can tell, people that have only watched previews and youtube videos seem to have a much more negative view of the game than those who have actually played it... And most are looking to rip into Bioware anyway. It's been clear for some time that ME:A was always going to have a lot of negativity around it no matter its quality.

Anyway, having played a few hours I'm really enjoying it. It's engaging enough that I can ignore the bugs and the... inconsistent animations.

One thing I would like to add is that Cora and Liam are already leagues ahead of the two initial squadmates in ME1, one isn't an annoying space racist, and the other also doesn't have the same barebones depth Henry Cavill's acting has. Thank the Maker for those two.
