In real world military-grade weapons you don't need to engage in Arkansas elevation, so long as you haven't exceeded it's maximum effective range. The M-16 for instance has an elevation knob that you can adjust depending on your range to the target. It adjusts the rear sight to compensate for range and the bullet's trajectory. In layman's terms you wouldn't need to raise the sights above the target. On that note this seems like a bit of a step backwards for Mass Effect weapons, so from a purely lore perspective it is kind of dumb. In the end though when it comes to the shooter gameplay the only thing that matters is how fun it is, and this could end up being a fun mechanic. When engaging multiple targets at varying unknown distances you do not have the time to measure the range and adjust your scope, thats why modern precision rifles have a drop chart in their scopes reticle, also called a ''christmas tree'', for quick holdovers. Adjusting sights for bullet drop (and windage for crosswinds) is for engaging single targets at known distances from static positions. Though one would think scopes in the future would have a built in laser range finder that adjust elevation automatically at all times. We're already working on that.

Sadly, that doesn't make much sense for railgun like weapons (those should be accurate for kilometers - I mean those bullets are really really really fast compared to today's weapons, even stuff like a .338 Lapua-Magnum Sniper-Rifle has more drop than those guns and that's a gun for extreme range already!)...and yes: ME-Weapons are like a rail- or coil-guns (!) - they just use the Mass Effect instead of rails or coils to propell the bullet (note: That's also why recoil kind of makes NO SENSE with those weapons ) greetings LAX
