ME2 - Who's falling on the platform? Who rescues Shepard?

I remember a post on the old BSN where someone said that Thane didn't pull Shepard up despite being the only one left, so Shepard died. I believe the theory at the time was that everyone takes precedence over Thane and if there were a surviving squadmate that escorted Chakwas back to the Normandy Thane would wait for them to pull Shep up (which of course they couldn't do because they're not present for that cutscene). I remember having this happen once but unfortunately I can't recall the circumstances clearly. I think tried to kill everyone but sent Jacob back with Chakwas and the final squadmates were unloyal Miranda and Thane. If anyone wants to chase this myth.
