Mike Laidlaw @mike_LaidlawStandard turnover is roughly 10%, (http://www.compensationforce.com/2016/04/2015-turnover-rates-by-industry.html …) and Bioware has over 500 employees so that's ~50 people a year who move on.

Checking in on the PnP front and... nope, never laid eyes on malus either. I've sometimes seen debuffs called "conditions", but never maluses (malii?). Maybe it's game design jargon? Like the kind of thing that appears in internal discussions because it refers to some nuanced concept more precise/general than "debuff", but which isn't necessarily exposed to players.

Interesting that despite the influx of resources from Bioware Montreal, they still have lots of openings. Just how many Québécois went to EA Motive? It's not surprising... If the rumors are to be believed, those on the ME team that didn't move over to Motive are now helping out on Dylan as well continuing to support MEAMP. There may not be many from that team that can help out on DA right now. Yes, but there must be an upper limit (hopefully) on how much more production work there is on Dylan. Those people have to get freed up sometime. Despite that, Edmonton is willing to open reqs and hire full-times now. That could mean either a) Dylan is pushed waaaay out and those people won't be available soon enough to help with DA4, , or DA4 is going to ship earlier than originally planned.

DAI was "abandoned" in late 2015 to concentrate on MEA and also work on Dylan.
Perhaps in mid-2017, MEA is being temporarily "abandoned" to concentrate on Dylan and also work on DA4???

The only place where I hear Malus is with my (French speaking) friends when talking about games (PnP or cRPGs) and it's more to define a subset of potential debuffs than all of them (it's used when talking about stats penalties). Example: Debuff X gives a malus to dexterity.

"We should decrease the bonus" is clearer than "we should decrease the increase" or "we should decrease the buff". Imagine if the buff applies multiple bonuses, and you only want to touch one of them. The way I'm reading it, a buff is an ability that applies one or more bonuses, while a debuff is an ability that applies one or more maluses/penalties. Players can casually use "buff" or "debuff" to refer to the individual stat changes, but game designers might have more need to distinguish between "this is an individual stat change" (a bonus or malus/penalty) and "this is a collection of stat changes packaged as an ability" (a buff or debuff).

As the person who would likely be responsible for such things, if such a game were to exist , I can say with confidence that I would be in favor of Buff/Debuff. For me, the distinction is in specificity. A Bonus/Malus, as arvaarad mentions, could be any stat change, a buff or debuff would specifically come with a UI marker and description and be it's own thing. For example, a malus might be -10 Strength but a debuff would be 'Weakness: -10 to Strength' which then has an associated visual language attached to it and placed on a character, either in world through VFX or on the HUD somewhere in UI.

Surely we had the bonus/malus thing with those sigils they introduced with the DLC. If you used them it gave you a bonus in one specific area that was offset by a decrease in stat in another. I just didn't see the point so never applied them.
There were also some items in Trespasser that were the same I seem to recall. If you are hot stuff with working out the benefits/penalties to your advantage then I suppose you'd find them fun but I prefer simplicity myself. Either it gives me a bonus or it doesn't. I'm happy working out the relatives benefits of two different bonuses when deciding between items but not trying to weigh up whether the benefit outweighs the penalty on one item.
