Nonetheless, I don't recall seeing any gaming site wailing "BUT WHAT ABOUT DAAAA FOOOOUR?" nearly two years after DAI's release. But there was lots of that after ME3, to the point where journalists were like "Dwarven Rage, yeah great, what about MEA?" Casey Hudson tweeted about a fourth ME game less than a year after ME3's release. We can't say with certainty there will be a DA4. Sorry, do I sound a tad bitter? Really, I'm fine. I'm fiiiiiiiiiine. The difference is that we know that DA4 is coming. Like 99,99% sure. And we can pretty much tell what it can be about (the story line will be a continuation of sorts from the past title). Both MEA and secret IP though are also almost complete mysteries (and are almost here), and actually BW does a lot to make those mysteries pretty intriguing. |

Let's not forget that video games don't live in a vacuum, either.
The reality is that science fiction is a much more well known and beloved genre than fantasy, in any kind of medium, mostly because its very nature allows for more creativity and a lot more experimentation.
Just look at TV shows, movies and books. Fantasy has sort of begun to reeeally become mainstream with the Lord of the Rings movies, most of what came before them having cult followings or being box-office and critical failures (I'm over simplifying here, of course). And they were also very similar in themes, settings, character archetypes, history and mythology based etc. In the science fiction camp, however, there's a lot more leeway for what you can do and this divide gets transmitted over different types of media.
And then it also just falls down to people's personal tastes. For example, for video games, I prefer fantasy but for movies or TV shows I gravitate more towards science fiction.

^ Not to mention that some people have weird ideas like "these are the types of dragons," and doing something different from that gets you shit on by people that think they know everything about some non-existent, fantasy creature. I saw a post like this recently on Tumblr and half of the examples didn't even apply to Dragon Age dragons, so I guess Thedosian dragons don't count, or something.
With sci-fi, I think there is less of the idea of "following the rules" for dragons, dwarves, elves, etc. I'd say that the exception to this would be with time travel, and we even saw posts like that regarding the In Hushed Whispers mission -- "They did time travel wrong!"
Heck, one of the reasons Thedas was created was so they could do different things with the common fantasy themes, like the downtrodden elves.
