Ask A Game Dev:Q: So, I read that Dragon Age 4 was still in very early pre-production as recently as mid-2017. I'd actually been hoping that the next game might benefit from the long gap between Inquisition and its likely release in 2019/2020. I'm confused why the team wouldn't have immediately moved onto production of 4 after Inquisition shipped (with only a portion of BioWare Edmonton working on DLC). What would they have been doing up until 2017? Isn't this unusual and possibly discouraging? A: From what I understand, most of the devs that didn’t join EA Motive to work on Battlefront 2 were added to the Anthem team. Who's the dev that said this first and foremost? Under the assumption that this is true. BioWare was working on two big games (Anthem and MEA) since Trespasser's release. Understandably not having the resources as a result to fully commit to DA4; it bugs me that DA will always be a "B" franchise for BioWare. Especially when ( I believe) DAI is BioWare's most successful DA game. The fact that EA said okay first for Anthem instead of DA4, says a lot to me. |

Nevermind that a lot will be riding on Anthem's shoulders, not just because it's a new IP but an ambitious project, I think a lot of it is simply a matter of schedule. After MEA was done, Anthem just happens to be the game that is next in line to be released. Also - we don't know what exactly timeline we're talking about. From the looks of it, this is the state of things how they were in April/May. |

Anthem has been made for the last five years, which means that it was already 2 years into production by the time DAI was released (and likely getting less resources while DAI got the bulk). It's not a case of Anthem being picked instead of DA4 when it already was being made. |
