@biomarkdarrah Are the DA protagonists (the Warden, Hawke) avatars for the player? Or their own character? Actually, Commander Shepard, too, for that matter.

Lol, nope. Because you are confusing two different things - the player is asking whether there's one full, set-in-stone canon WORLD-STATE with any other world-states being 'incorrect', not whether things in books are supposed to be treated as non-canonical or not above some player choice. And they are, especially if they're directly addressed in games later. There would be no Cole in DAI without events in Asunder. Leliana is still alive in DAI despite being dead in certain playthroughs.

Yea, basically - when events occur in, say, a book and then are very clearly addressed or referenced in the game (sometimes even on critical path) it's hard to pretend that they didn't happen, unless we venture into serious headcanon territory.

That doesn't mean that they don't leave us enough room to connect the dots in a way that is congruent with certain world-states. They usually do. And if it's acceptable that Leliana can be alive after DAO despite her head being lopped off and it's explained with some sort of mysterious lyrium!ghost version of her, then there can be all kinds of lore-friendly explanations that can make seemingly incompatible stories from books or comics compatible with most world-states.
Varric has banter in DAI in which he states that he's met Sten the Arishok
... so he must've been present in some way as well.
