I feel like Flynn's paragraph could immediately be followed by him trying to sell me a bridge.
I am skeptical, to say the least.

Pretty standard response from a - in my opinion - very leading question. I guess there are two ways to view Flynn's response. 1 - it's the truth and/or he believes what he says (I'm inclined to to this option myself). 2 - he wants to continue to work in the industry (or any industry) and doesn't want a reputation for bad-mouthing previous employers. Have any ex Bioware devs gone on record as saying "EA is the evil overlord devil company" confirming the worst of the internet's opinions of them? If anyone was ripe for such action, I'd have thought it would be David Gaider, given how...er, blunt....he can be.

Kim Sharp of Prodromos @ussstellardrift Speaking of Threnn and Ferelden people. If you are able to answer @patrickweekes . Does she have a last name?
Patrick Weekes @patrickweekes Hm. I thought she was from lower-class background, which often means no surname in Ferelden. So I would headcanon if you want one.

To be clear, that wasn’t a trap. I’m not part of the ME fandom, so I legitimately have no idea what you’re talking about. I know the ME fandom has some bone to pick with Flynn, but for all I know, it has something to do with the colour of shirts he wears.
But as I was hesitant to ask in the first place, I won’t press the issue.

Dawg, the company doesn’t have all those layers of hierarchy for funsies. Every manager is relying on the folks below them, and gives them lots of autonomy. Otherwise, why even bother having that layer in the org chart? If squirrely stuff goes on in a big company, it’s much more likely to originate from direct managers and the like. Or even a team getting itself into a weird mode. My field is so bad about that. Left to our own devices, we’ll work ourselves down to absolutely useless gibbering stubs of people, until a manager or spouse comes in and says “hey maybe sleep, your brain’ll work better”.

If the implied ex-dev is Manveer Heir, then it is fairly known that before he took off he posted blatantly racist comments on Twitter. Something about delicious white people tears. I really have no desire to look up exactly what, it was pretty toxic. There was a backlash, I have no idea if it lead to his departure, but as far as I know there was no comment from either Bioware or EA. Look it up if you want to ruin your day somewhat. There are several reputable sources, not just your run of the mill blogs.

USGamer: Former BioWare Writer Mike Laidlaw Sheds More Light on Dragon Age 4's Development, Possible Storywww.usgamer.net/articles/former-bioware-writer-mike-laidlaw-sheds-more-light-on-dragon-age-4s-development-possible-story?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitterpbs.twimg.com/media/DY1oVbeVQAAMK15.jpgUnder Laidlaw's direction we might've learned a more about Solas, the elven apostate who played a large role in Dragon Age Inquisition (which Kat enjoyed) and its Trespasser DLC. "Post-[Dragon Age: Inquisition Trespasser DLC], there's obviously a route to go with the Solas revelations," Laidlaw says. "If you've played Trespasser, you will know what logically will follow."
That's not to say Laidlaw isn't curious about the Dragon Age reboot. "Very likely they went through a redesign phase, that's pretty normal. And I've heard reboot, but I'm not sure what that means contextually," he says. "I would find it unlikely to be a new Star Trek kind of thing. It's more likely that the existing plans will be re-examined in light of existing leadership."
I listened to the podcast last night...was around 32 minutes. Overall, I thought it was a good conversation but the majority of it can be summed up as: Jason: "EA is a bad, evil company, right? Come on, Aaron, they're bad, right? Evil, capable of committing nuanced atrocities...say it...come on...just...say it" Aaron: "Actually, you know, they are gaming company who, you know, makes games...like other companies who makes games do...it's run by humans and not evil entities manifested on Earth...just people." Jason: "Come on, there is evil in there somewhere...bad stuff...can you elaborate on the bad stuff I mentioned". Aaron: "Um, no evil, bad stuff...I mean, I smell your agenda but I've actually been there and run things more complex than a podcast. I'll take a hardpass." Jason: 'Okay, we'll table the evil for later...thank you, Aaron"

The podcast wasn't very enlightening. Aaryn clearly wasn't willing to say anything bad about EA from the start (why burn bridges?) and they just continued on that path anyway. The only really interesting thing I found was that it was BioWare's (bad?) idea to use Frostbite.

The only really interesting thing I found was that it was BioWare's (bad?) idea to use Frostbite. I think we find out on "Anthem", "DA4" and whatever ME title comes out if it was a bad idea. DAI and MEA was all about growing pains with Frostbite but, as he stated, the engines they had at that time were inadequate for their ambitions and Frostbite appeared to fit the bill. With DICE also a subsidiary of the same company, I can see how it would make sense to try that route.

Askagamedev got asked if it's bad that Bioware's lead writer left. For those who don't want to click on the link, here have a spoiler. Q: Anonymous asked: in recent news, bioware's lead writer left the studio. How damaging is to lose a lead writer compared to losing other positions in the middle of development?A: Not very. Writing really isn’t that different from the other design roles on the team, and is really a sub-lead position below the lead designer and creative director. Remember, [the writer doesn’t dictate the story for the entire game], they create the narrative glue that takes you from gameplay to gameplay. Let’s talk a little about the “lead” title and what it actually means for a moment. The lead dinglehopper isn’t actually the best dinglehopper on the team who does the most critical dinglehopping; it’s actually the person who manages all of the other dinglehoppers on the team. As such, the lead dinglehopper actually doesn’t do a lot of dinglehopping - the lead dinglehopper spends most of her time in meetings making sure that the overall dinglehopping is on schedule, that any other systems aren’t being blocked by the dinglehopping progress, and that each dinglehopper is assigned tasks that they are best prepared to handle. If the lead dinglehopper leaves, someone else will be appointed to lead dinglehopper and assume those same duties of keeping everyone else on track. There are also different levels of existing dinglehoppers - there’s the junior dinglehoppers that just started dinglehopping, mid-level dinglehoppers who have been at it for a while, and senior dinglehoppers who are experts at dinglehopping and generally mentor the junior dinglehoppers. One of the senior dinglehoppers is the most likely candidates to be promoted to lead because that person will likely have been handling some of those responsibilities already. Will the overall direction of dinglehopping on the team change because of a lead’s departure? Sure, different people are different and person A might zig where person B might zag. But does it mean there’s a disaster brewing if the lead dinglehopper leaves? Nah, it’s not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things, because AAA games are built by teams, and [ those teams have a lot of strong talent spread out over many developers and not just singular rockstars]. DAI and MEA was all about growing pains with Frostbite MEA wasn't a frostbite growing pain? I thought graphics were excellent? Animation snafus is just people hours spent, not Game Engine Bumps. As I understand it, the growing pains for MEA and DAI was creating the RPG elements associated with both respective franchises (character creator, inventory, character leveling, etc) in an engine that was made only with First-person shooter games in mind. Even from that, each franchise had it's own challenges. DAI was delayed a year to incorporate multiple races and also attempting to develop on two separate generations of consoles. MEA wasted a ton of time on attempting to make exploring procedurally generated worlds interesting and only had 18 months to put out a finished product which led to the animation issues as they needed to follow up a lot of initial work by hand and didn't have the time (which led to the infamous Addison "my face is tired memes"). Now that the grunt work is done in creating the RPG elements for both games, theoretically, DA4 and MEA2 should not have the issues of their predecessors.

I asked Mike Laidlaw a question in Discord and thought you guys would like to know it as well. Gilli: Okay, this may be a bit farfetched, but was DAI's Tempest Focus Ability "Thousand Cuts" named after this? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lingchi (I was researching something for my fanfic when I stumbled over this) Mike Laidlaw It is named after that, or the fairly widely used expression "it was a death by a thousand cuts" which is referring to that torture, but most people don't know it [HASH]DAT
