So first of all, fuck Jason Schreier. Even in the edited excerpt, he comes off as a dick. And second, VINDICATION! I've said all along that EA doesn't, "thou shalt intensify the greed!" That's just silly. But what they do say is, in many ways, worse, "We need to increase shareholder value and single unit sales aren't cutting it. What we need is recurring revenue! Bioware, can Frostbite simulate a Vegas slot machine? No? Well, work up some ideas and pitch us at the next leaders meeting. This will be our strategic imperative for the fiscal year, and we need all business units to align on this imperative. Bonuses will be based on a recurring revenue KPI going forward." (I put a lot of words in Flynn's mouth, but I think my corporate speak is pretty authentic.)

I asked Mike Laidlaw a question in Discord and thought you guys would like to know it as well. Gilli: Okay, this may be a bit farfetched, but was DAI's Tempest Focus Ability "Thousand Cuts" named after this? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lingchi (I was researching something for my fanfic when I stumbled over this) Mike Laidlaw It is named after that, or the fairly widely used expression "it was a death by a thousand cuts" which is referring to that torture, but most people don't know it [HASH]DAT In Jade Empire there is a style also named 'Thousand Cuts'.

Yes, that is a running joke in his Twitch streams I asked Mike Laidlaw a question in Discord and thought you guys would like to know it as well. Idk if the name of the skill is a nod to Jade Empire, but the "Jaded Ham" definitely is.

In Jade Empire there is a style also named 'Thousand Cuts'. Idk if the name of the skill is a nod to Jade Empire, but the "Jaded Ham" definitely is. I think the style also came from Lingchi because there is some Chinese culture in Jade Empire , and Mike Laidlaw was one of the lead writers. In Chinese there is another phrase almost equal to Lingchi, 'qian dao wan gua'. 'qian' means thousand, 'dao' means blade or saber, 'wan' means ten thousand, and 'gua' means cut. I think 'thousand cuts' is closer to 'qian dao wan gua'.

“I wanted to try a new challenge, and I knew that [the staff reassignments] would change the [Dragon Age 4] date,” he said. “I was going to have a very small skeleton crew. I’m lucky because Patrick Weekes is an exceptional lead writer, Daniel Kading is an exceptional lead designer. There were two very veteran designers who could hold a vision. I thought if I’m ever gonna go, this is the least disruptive time for me to leave. So, I’d be stunned if whatever plan I had remained completely unchanged.”- I'm sure most people here already knew this... [HASH]DAT

Yeah, not sure why "game not in full development has skeleton crew" is particularly newsworthy but I'm sure it helped get some clicks

Whats' more, the period when team's reduced to 'skeleton crew' has been given by Mike to be the reason he chose to leave when he did - said that it was a good time to depart, as it was least disruptive for the project. By all accounts this kind of development seems to have been expected for a while and par for the course. We don't know what will happen in upcoming years or months, but I don't see reason for alarm now. But I guess some people need to find stuff to write about...

It does mean that everybody hoping for a DA release before 2020 is just setting themselves up for disappointment. It's not like they haven't done any job on the series. Alexis Kennedy has finished his stint with Bioware over half a year ago, and they've been sending signals that they're working on something since the end of 2015/start of 2016.

It's not a question of whether any work has been done, it's a question of when they can ramp up to full production. And with the majority of Bioware's resources tied up for the forseeable future, full scale production for Dragon Age 4 will likely be off in the distance. Unfortunately.

If reports about MEA are accurate, the issue that decided of state of the project was wonky pre-production time, basically scrapping the main idea and getting the game reworked almost from the scratch late into development. If they can hash out enough of their vision and streamline where they can - and they've been working on it for a while now - the full production itself would logically be a smoother, potentially faster process. Nevermind that they'll have power of Anthem team behind their backs soon enough. It's not like it's still a secret IP and we don't know its release date yet, and we know that after the work on one project is done, the majority of Bioware's resources goes to the next one.

Great pre-production tends to lead to a smoother process, a cheaper process, but not necessarily a much faster process. Basically any change that happens in production cost far far more than what it would have in pre-production, or design. It doesn't mean that production time will be halved or something. The team on Anthem are still a ways away from working on Dragon Age, because it's not as important a title. Bioware rarely releases 2 full games a year, and even if they can I'm not sure they'll want to intrude on the space Anthem will enjoy. Basically everything points to a post 2019 release.

It could also end up in development limbo and then we get a half-baked monstrosity that is below average, with multiplayer focus and micro transactions, a game that feels nothing like a Dragon Age game. But that couldn't POOSSSIBBLYYY happen, riiiight?!

So we knew they were working on the game, we knew that the majority of the staff were on Anthem, so what's new here? Also, when I think of DA4 being a while away, I think of the phrase "quality takes time."
We'll get the game, maybe not for a couple of years or more, but we'll get it & time will be taken to make sure it is the best experience for all, I believe.
Just my opinion on this.
In the meantime I'd having a DA fix by going back through DA:I.

Also, if Dragon Age 4 releases post 2019 it's in danger of straddling the console cycles again. I have no idea whether the new PS4 Pro and XBOX version (whatever it's called) will lengthen cycles, but the traditional console cycle is about 6 or 7 years. PS1 to PS2 was six years, PS2 to PS3 was six years, PS3 to PS4 was seven years. PS4 was released 2014, so traditionally a new console would be released 2020 or 2021.
I'm pretty sure Bioware came out and said developing Inquisition cross gen instead of solely for the PS4 generation was a mistake. So if they take too long with the game, they may find themselves in a situation they really don't want to be in ...

Presumably Sony and Microsoft keep some kind of dialogue open with major publishers/developers so they know timelines for these sorts of things. After all, it does PS and XBox no good to release on a date and have no games available to play on them.

Yeah, no new.... news but I'm still disappointed. It's not like taking longer is somehow going to guarantee a better game. If they were focusing primarily on developing DA4, sure. But not when most of their resources are focused elsewhere. It just means it's going to take longer.
Can't control it but it still sucks.
