BioWare @bioware Congratulations to @sonysantamonica on the launch of #GodofWar. Think Kratos would be willing to take care of an old elven god for us?

I know they're joking but who else immediately started imagining Kratos as follower (in a hypothetical DA game)?!

I don't know anything about God of War, but the dude in the ads looks like an Avvar. I would be totally down with having someone like Sky Watcher/Amund as a follower next game, he's hilarious.

Everyone in the Salos (hahaha!) thread should just get together and send some chocolate or donuts to Cori, because she's going to be our one true champion for a somewhat happy ending for Solasmancers!

My thoughts exactly. Also Nipuni! I need to go drown myself in her Solas art.
Sara @midnightsg GRRM made a point discussing how much he hates fanfics w/ his characters. I wonder how @patrickweekes and the other writers @bioware feel about fanfics? They “own” the characters like a novelist. But they also create them specifically for us, the players, to choose their fate.
Patrick Weekes @patrickweekes I love the idea of fanfics and wholeheartedly support them existing, but I can’t look at fanfic for stuff I’ve worked on, both legally and because it hits too many nerves.
Mark Darrah @biomarkdarrah Do I need to do a breakdown of the games I’ve worked on?
Ok let’s do this. In December of 1996 I was hired by BioWare. But I hadn’t graduated yet. I wrote an installer for Shattered Steel and and interactive music editor for an early version of BG. Pretty sure neither was used
In 1997 I actually started. Baldur’s Gate was my first project. Programmer Notable things: Conversation System Half the UI All of combat and the magic system My 1st scripting language The 2DA (arguable my SECOND scripting language)
The 2DA was intended to be used as a data source only (rpgs have a lot of data based tables) That thing became used and corrupted up until DA2. It was always intended to be parsed into a different structure. #2DAForever
Any ways, BG1 shipped December 21, 1998 (technically this was the last day of fall that year I think) I became Lead Programmer on Baldur’s Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast which release April 30, 1999
From this point on, it gets messier. Next up, Jade Empire I worked on that for a bit before switching to Neverwinter Nights. I wrote the DM client that shipped with that. June 18, 2002 so I cant have done TOO much on Jade Empire in this stint
Ok back onto Jade Empire. Which is built using KotOR’s engine which was built out of Neverwinter’s engine. Lead Programmer Things of Note: Architecture of the combat system
Jade Empire shipped April 12, 2005 I moved on to [REDACTED] as Lead Programmer. Then [REDACTED] got merged with Mass Effect 1 onto Unreal
I wasn’t very comfortable being Lead Programmer on tech I didn’t know so BioWare made me Stream Arquitect of both project. 2 things 1. My business cards seriously said Stream Arquitect with that spelling 2. Yeah I know that wasn’t a good solution to me not knowing Unreal
So somewhere in here, I ask to move to the newly formed Handheld group. It was before Mass Effect 1 shipped
Lead Programmer on Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood Then the Senior Producer left to take over Dragon Age: Origins and I switch to production. Still had to do code (small team) Things of note: Stats system without a dying/dead problem, which included a simple event system
That event system accidentally became my second (third?) scripting language. (Oof) Sonic shipped Sept 25, 2008
Lightning round. Started another handheld project but left to go back to [REDACTED] as Executive Producer after he left. Unfortunately had to shut that project down for staffing reasons. Moved onto Dragon Age but in a Senior Production role

We moved some of the team onto DLC and some onto [REDACTED COUGH DA4 COUGH]. Most of the team moved to Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem
In November of 2016, we moved almost everyone (myself included) onto Mass Effect: Andromeda to help them finish for March 21, 2017 (I was on at launch so it get a picture)
Emily (aka Domino) pentapod I love that in the middle of @biomarkdarrah's lengthy list of titles he's worked on, a co-worker's photo of pasta sauce interrupted, so now I'm pretty sure Mark worked on the Classico tomato sauce franchise too.
OMG, I may love this mod even more than the one that lets you always keep Dog in DAO!
I mean, I refer to the game as Dragon Age 2 to save confusion, but in my heart and my world state spreadsheet it will always be Exodus, which is by far the superior title. Definitely using this the next time I play it.
(Yes, I have a world state spreadsheet. Doesn't everybody?)
I appreciate that Patrick Weekes is willing to not openly hate fanfic writers. I didn't realize until reading his tweet how disheartening it was to hear about Gaider hating on them. As if we fanfic writers are perverting "his things".

To be honest, it might help if SO MANY of them didn't focus on sex and/or shipping characters. I mean, I write sex scenes too, but the far greater part of my writing focuses on characterization and inner emotional stuff (such eloquence!). I know someone who doesn't write any sex scenes at all and is nearing a million words. So far, my one posted fic with sex in it has the most views and the most kudos, so you can see what reader priority is. I can see how that would be disheartening for someone who put a lot of thought, heart, and time into developing a full character, only to have them reduced to being a porn actor. Sex can be meaningful and significant for a particular scene, but a great deal of it is just smut for its own sake.
I don't know that I would appreciate people making fanfic of my character, either. I know what he would say, how he would act, why I wrote him in the way I did, and what his motivations are. It would give me the same feeling as seeing my Inquisitor as an NPC in DA4, where the devs are putting words in his mouth, making him act in ways that might be out of character.
[edit] I'd say that the main difference with writing fic for something like Dragon Age and other types of entertainment, even many other games, is that, because DA is a RPG, people primarily write their own characters. While someone could certainly write an Inquisition prequel, or focus solely on introspection for their character, many are going to want to explore the goings on in the game itself, which necessitates writing characters other than the player's Inquisitor. In that way, I think RPG fanfic is a trickier beast to deal with than something that is just straight fanfic, like Harry Potter, Star Trek, or even Witcher (as Geralt is ultimately his own person and doesn't belong to the player).

Dragon Age II was supposed to be called Dragon Age: Exodus and I wish it was. It would have contextualized the game better
I'm not so sure. "Exodus" suggests leaving a place. Much of DA2 involves staying in Kirkwall, rather than leaving Lothering.
Now if it had been mainly about the Hawkes' time as refugees, maybe.
You can easily say the same about Dragon Age: Origins. It was the first game and, with the origin stories, helped established the nature of the world and the various groups, but the plot of the game is the Fifth Blight, with a detour to a civil war.
