Chris Gardiner @chgardiner Writing game stories is hard when your plot has to account for the fact that a key character might be (a) alive, ( dead, or (c) a moth.
David Gaider @davidgaider By the time I hit DAI, Alistair was only 20% alive...but he was, at least, not a moth. That's true.
Sheryl Chee @sherylchee Hey, @patrickweekes, this can still happen, right?
Mary Kirby @biomarykirby So... Alistair: 80% dead, 20% moth? Is that the plan?
Chris Gardiner @chgardiner This is an appropriate use of maths.
Hah I was initially thinking that "moth" thing was a typo, but I guess not! XD
But yeah... This is actually why I'm hopeful that the next game, given its likely setting, won't have too many cameos and carryovers. Let's start fresh! DAI had a glut of them, so I'm hoping for as few as possible.
Due to issues like those mentioned in the tweet, any sort of cameo can only be hollow. Sure, Alistair's role in Abyss had an Alistair flavor, but it was still interchangeable with Stroud and Loghain. If they can't have those kinds of significant choices really mean something, then I'd prefer that they just stick to have those in the current game, rather than having them influence the world at large. How much of an impact on the world can Kieran really have when he doesn't even exist in a good portion of plays?
Mountains. Cold. "Let's bring Dorian!" It's good to be Champion!
"Knight Errant;" interesting. I hope it's better than Magekiller, which was entertaining and started out very strong but essentially turned into a DA:I rehash, which was kind of lazy. I wonder what it's about. It makes me think of a knight enchanter.
Seconded, though Knight Errant makes me think of templars.
My first thought was this was probably going to be a story of a wandering Chevalier, like Michel de Chevin.
But honestly... I like the idea of a story about a Knight Enchanter even more.
I'm a bit late for this "Knight Errand" news, but the first thing that came to my mind was Don Quixote... Here's hoping this comic is a Theodosian version of it, would love to see a crazy delusional chevalier wandering throughout Thedas
David Gaider @davidgaider You know, at this point I should just lean into the whole "Gaider hates dwarven romances" thing. I may as well, as people keep saying it.

Even if we give the benefit of the doubt that this was written entirely in jest:
It shows a lack of appreciation for one's own authority wrt a fandom, and a huge underestimation of a fandom's ability to blow any statement from an authority out of proportion. So, at best, it's a joke in poor taste. At worst, it's intentional trolling, so enjoy the long tail on the aftermath.
A more constructive response would have been, "Yeah, I f--ked that one up. I'll be apologizing for that one until I retire." Don't lean into it, own it and apologize for it.
Inquisitor: Is that innuendo? Sera: No, it's at the front!

I don't really think a responsibility for blowing humorous/sarcastic statements out of proportion falls on Gaider or any writer/game dev really. This lands squarely on fans shoulders. Most of them are adults. They should know better than to treat any statement like it's a barrel of dynamite, otherwise it quickly becomes a slippery slope down to madness.

Gaider often forgets a lot of important statements he's made. I've called him out on it recently in regards the canceled DA novel with Fenris that he claims "he did not announce". With the receipts.
I love Fenris. IF they can bring back Lel as a lyrium ghost, how can they not bring back someone who LITERALLY has that nickname?
I don't even know that the big deal was about killing Lel and bringing her back. Falling in battle does not equal death. It's not like we have a cut scene of checking their pulse to confirm death before walking off.
Vegan, Year 1 of Med School. Zevran, Fenris, Cullen, and Thane.

I agree that DG shouldn't take responsibility for the pigheaded silliness of the fandom. But that doesn't mean he gets a free pass to troll the fandom either. I've got to believe that by now and even back then, Bioware knew the fandom well enough to know that any little thing said by anyone who works for Bioware would turn into a huge big deal. So the value of a joke versus that reality has to be considered. Is it worth the overreaction? Why not add, "JUST KIDDING" or some other disclaimer?
There's another dimension to consider -- that this is about a romance with a (perceived) minority race. There is sexual and racial politics wrapped up in the context of that joke. Think about the underrepresented people that Bioware prides itself in supporting. Think about how they might project their own situations onto the plight of dwarves. When DG makes fun of dwarves, it's not a super long stretch to imagine how people might take that as having fun being made of themselves. Should such fans take some responsibility for their own projection and self-insertion? Absolutely! But again, that doesn't give DG or anyone in Bioware a free pass.
Your metaphor of a barrel of dynamite is right on the money. DG was playing with matches in the explosives shack. Is it any surprise he's still getting burned for it?

I don't know what that would accomplish. There's been more than enough attempts to clarify what David Gaider meant and yet people STILL come around to this erroneous conclusion that David Gaider hates dwarves.
Besides, what does he need to apologize for? His joke isn't offensive; people are just making a mountain out of a molehill.

The apology is for trolling the fandom or for a joke in bad taste, take your pick. All he had to do was add "JUST KIDDING" or some other disclaimer, given the knowledge of what the fandom gets up to.
Bioware has every right to be proud of their efforts towards diversity and fair representation. In that context, the joke is in bad taste.
