I think the problem that some folks have with Varric is that Bioware keeps throwing him at us with the expectation that everyone likes him and that everyone's characters like him (see: giving the Inquisitor an estate in Kirkwall and making a living Hawke still hang out there). He narrates our world state in the Keep. He's in the comics. A novelized version of Hard in Hightown was released. This character is suffering (in some players' minds) from over-saturation.
I think he's fine. I just don't want to see him anymore.

I have an Inquisitor who’s disliked by most of the companions, Varric included. He never got the title, the mansion or the keys to the city. |

Well, except that I actually do like Varric, whereas I disliked and wanted no more of Liara after ME1, and certainly none of her after ME2, but alas... Oops, I digress. Even as much as I do like Varric, I'm empathetic with everyone who didn't, and I agree that we've seen enough of him already. |

It's funny, because I also LOVED Varric in DA2, so I assumed he'd be my top companion in DA:I as well. However, I also discovered that I had gotten enough of him and was ready to move on. I will miss his nicknames, though.

In your heart shall burn for me! I’ll never forget my first playthrough where I went went from “Yay! I closed the breach!” To “Oh shit that’s a big wall of nope heading my way” in about a minute! Plus Cory’s Big reveal was amazing with his big stirring theme playing in the background! |
