We're talking about people who would see racism in literally anything, I believe.
It's a detail most people would never notice.
There is an entire subculture on Tumblr centered around making sure every character has the exact same skin tone and hair color as in their first appearance. I mean, I like consistency, but it's the attitude that there was maliciousness behind the art direction, which I don't like, and has poisoned any kind of discussion.
That does seem to be what most of the outcry is about - people wanting attention and some sort of moral superiority in their group for pointing out inconsistencies in a game series that is often deliberately inconsistent. |

LOL to me they are the ones that have no clue to as what being outside is all about, I worked in NAVAL aviation for 42 years so in the summer I was quite dark and my hair light in the winter I OH NO my skin lightened and my hair darkened so hence my comment of no clue of being outside, take for what you will  |

What would be a good way for them to convey the information without implying maliciousness? I think it’s pretty natural for creators to feel a little bad if they accidentally sent a message they didn’t intend. So even if people lovingly point out these issues with no judgment, it might end up feeling judgy anyway. IDK. I just feel like this is a larger problem in how we conceptualize stuff like racism and sexism. The huge majority of it is totally accidental, with no malice, but it’s hard for people to feel like they’re not being accused of malice when it’s brought up. We should have a collective understanding that most bias is subconscious (in fact, it’s so subconscious that everyone has it, even the groups that the bias affects), so these things feel less like a callout and more like a reminder. Because it seems like it benefits everyone to bring this stuff up. I don’t think any of us want to create a world where a hundred voices (accidentally) say “you’d be more beautiful if you were lighter”. Even if each individual voice is subtle, barely noticeable... hearing the chorus gets pretty shitty. |

Although I agree with you that a great deal of unconscious bias is the result of social programming, arvaraad, I'm not even sure how you could possibly construe this particular situation as indicative of some kind of bias. Dorian appears to have a lighter complexion in one panel — so what? Maybe it's just the artist's interpretation of how the lighting in that corner of the tavern works? It does seem pretty bright. Prejudice, sexism and homophobia are massive problems in western society, but there is unquestionably a group of individuals who frequent Tumblr and the like that have made "outrage" into a kind of sport. They don't actually help tackle the issues they're supposedly worried about; they're just more concerned with looking more progressive than the rest of us, and they do this by dissecting every work of popular culture AND fan culture for possible -isms. This isn't even the first time this issue has arisen in relation to a Dragon Age comic. I remember people flipping their shit over Isabela looking kind of pale on the inside cover art for The Silent Grove, despite being dark-skinned throughout TSG, Those Who Speak and Until We Sleep. |

Fringe groups from all sides will always find things to outrage about - whether it's a panel where someone's skin is the wrong color or Cassandra being supposedly a man or at least sporting a male jaw  We don't know why things got delayed. It may as well be mundane technical issues or something about the schedule. |

They're including a physical demo of DA4 and they ran out of sticky tape to attach the CDs.
This isn't even the first time this issue has arisen in relation to a Dragon Age comic. I remember people flipping their shit over Isabela looking kind of pale on the inside cover art for The Silent Grove, despite being dark-skinned throughout TSG, Those Who Speak and Until We Sleep. Clearly its the light source in that pic, so that's ridiculous.
Now if the shit-flipping had been over her actually having pants on, I'd understand. That's basically a violation of the laws of Thedas. Where were the continuity checkers from Bioware on that? (Disgusted noise.)
