Great podcast with Mike! It's always great when Mike does one of these kinds of interviews - he's articulate and you get a lot of great insight into Dragon Age, BioWare and the industry. He really tries to answer your questions and even the topics he can't really talk about... he'll still give you something to chew on. I think that's really one of his strengths. I feel I come away with even more respect for game developers after listening to him (and other good dev podcasts like ProducerHax). I get a sense he's probably played more games than most of us ever will.  In addition to touching on a number of DA questions, we did get a few morsels about the future... He emphasized more than once they're looking to build deeper, more meaningful secondary quests. Combat's another focus point (also, keep an eye on LukeBarrett who's been offering some great insight here on these boards!). He also liked how in Dark Souls 3, players could leave their mark on the game in ways seen by other players. Though he wasn't sure what the right fit might be for DA - yet. Also, as usual, keep an eye on upcoming comics and novels for tibits on the next game. |

^ Not that I'm aware of. I think it was either a general statement about their usual slate of ancillary materials, especially since we know there is an upcoming comic, or it was a minor slip and there is a novel in the works. Heck, I'm rather hoping that DG handed off the concept/idea of the novel that didn't work out to another writer, or just over to Laidlaw/Darrah to do with what they will. I'm sure he had something in mind, but it just never came together.

I'd really like another novel some time during this dry spell between games. The comics are "just okay" for me. Not only do I prefer the longer novel format and feel that you can get more meat out of it, but Magekiller didn't really endear me to the format, even as someone who did enjoy the previous DA comics. The repetitiveness was SO annoying; they could have gotten an entire scene or two out of all the repetition over the five (or however many) issues.

Yeah, I mean we knew - probably around the beginning of the year - they were working on something DA-y. Now, they barely even make an effort to disguise the fact.  Which is awesome, but still... In addition to the marketing plan Hrungr mentioned, since EA is publicly listed there is revenue recognition which gets triggered once a project is announced. Sometimes. I wouldn't have thought it was a problem for them as far out as they are, but Mark Darrah had it pinned on his Twitter. |
