Read a blog article that said it's about moving away from wish fulfillment but that didn't have DEv involvement...  That reasoning doesn't make much sense to me. In what way would a complicated relationship between characters who don't see eye-to-eye on everything be construed more as wish-fulfillment than a bunch of vapid doormats who just kowtow to the hero's whims? I just mentioned in an thread on the Andromeda forum just a day or so ago how much I also liked the Friend/Rival system, and I wish it was something they'd make a staple feature because it really did fundamentally change how I viewed and appreciated DA2 on subsequent playthroughs. (Though I will say in general, in my opinion the Dragon Age franchise has always been better than Mass Effect in terms of player agency in companion relationships.) <- but this paragraph pretty much sums it up. My thoughts on the rivalry system is that it helps me stop friendship chasing. I also like the idea of overall respect not being tied into agreeing with every thing some one says. I got to argue with my companions; and unlike Inquiistion, arguing too much with a companion doesn't make them a drunk like Cass becomes if you two don't see eye to eye. So, I had the freedom to argue, the freedom to disagree, without the fallout of destroying their lives or losing them as a companion like you can in Origins and Inquisition. In origins, disagreeing felt shallow because I could then turn around and butter them up with gifts and they'd pretend I hadn't just killed Connor. And if I didn't, they may just leave and I lose out on content. In Inquisition, except in the cases of Cass giving you a drunk scene, the punch scene with Solas and others leaving.... you just lost out on content. It makes me feel like I can't have a natural relationship with anybody, I'm either their BEST FRIEND EVAR, nobody, or enemy #1. |

Right. Yeah, I don't agree with that paragraph at all. Players were spoiled in DA2 because they could romance everyone, period. That aspect of the game was phoned in and it undermined the overall quality of the characters, but that's a separate and distinct criticism from the Friend/Rival system.
I agree with everything else you said. Thinking about it makes me sad all over again how much potential DA2 had that was squandered and overshadowed by its overwhelming issues. DAI made many much needed course corrections, but there's still plenty of room for improvement. The ME team keep using language like "organic" to describe Andromeda's relationships; if that translates in the way they hope/intend, we might see some of that spill over into the next Dragon Age game, too. Fingers crossed.

I think if they'd picked a better word. But the people who were never going to play more than once would never have understood, and the people who did play more than once probably bothered to try. The first group of people were not injured, because they were probably friendship chasers anyway. |

I think it would work well if they just implemented it ala Inquisition, with no visual "friendship meter" people feel compelled to fill up, but just a gradual shift in companion dialogue as you drift together or apart. Putting a literal gauge on it undoes any attempt at organic/realistic chemistry and turns it into just another game mechanic. But I'll stop diverting the thread now, apologies. XD |

Is Calpernia a good natured bisexual female? Cuz I think she's an LI for the next game. Marius might have something to say about that. Although, from what I've seen of him so far, I think he might just brood about it and not say anything. Calpernia's one of those quantum characters, isn't she? So she probably won't be in the next game. Although falling into an abyss may not actually guarantee someone's death, I suppose, if a dragon or something caught them and flew them away. She's not quantum. You don't see her die, so they could do anything. And you know... there's always the Leliana example. Oh, but we could mend Mariius' heart Marius as LI for the next game ! That reasoning doesn't make much sense to me. In what way would a complicated relationship between characters who don't see eye-to-eye on everything be construed more as wish-fulfillment than a bunch of vapid doormats who just kowtow to the hero's whims?
