FF is a game that is not separate from its story. Cars are not there without a reason - same way flying machines in FF8 or else aren't there for no rhyme or reason. They exist there, because that's how the world is built: it allows for a mixture of advanced mechanics and power generally known as "magic" (or spiritual energy or whatever). They're not that different in that regard from Avatar: The Last Airbender, and especially Legend Of Korra.

Or... you know: Star Wars. Which is generally referred to as science fantasy. With spaceships, nevermind cars.

Also - Harry Potter exists in a world where magic didn't jus pop out of nowhere; it existed alongside "our" world since its very conception it seems. It's an alternative universe, but's a fantasy alternative universe.

Honestly, there's nothing preventing fantasy/magical world to exist and look relatively similar to ours. So long as world's internal logic allows for technology we're familiar with and 'magic' to exist simultaneously, I see no reason to be dismissive of it. In fact, I personally applaud fantasy being expanded beyond confines of traditional low technology/magical setting.

And if a question arises of 'how come a mode of transportation that was invented due to lack of other, faster, maybe magical means can exist in a fantasy world where other faster means surely must exist?' I am going to have to ask the same about horses or propensity for people in typical fantasy tales to whack themselves with swords or arrows. It actually makes less sense to me than moving with a car, if I am perfectly honest ...  

Now, I actually give a pass to DA in that regard. Why? Because Thedas is literally a post-apocalyptic world, where people basically had to start over after loss of advanced, magic-based technology and power that fueled it.

Or it was, until George ruined it with midichlorians. That turd nugget. 

Final Fantasy VIII had cars.

The fact that DA4 seemingly (reading between possibly imaginary lines) hasn't been greenlit makes me sweat.

If this series is axed before we get to go to Tevinter I might actually die.

Aye, I suspect the only thing holding it back from official approval is that all of Bioware's staff are so heavily diverted to the other projects right now. Once Andromeda is launched and things are calmed down, they'll probably greenlight DA4 for real.

I mean.... or else.
