In al seriousness, though....do you really think it'll be 2018 or later for DA4??? 4 years is a long time as a minimum for a sequel (one title per year as a policy notwithstanding). Yeah, bear in mind there's now a New IP in the mix where there wasn't one before. And we know that the bulk of DA team is currently split between MEA and the New IP, and doesn't look to ramp up production until early next year. And even then, we don't know if they'll have full team on it as the New IP will still be in production. (Perhaps they'll pull some of the ME team over...?) Now DAI took 1 year pre-production plus 3 years full production. Now, even if DA4 took only 2 years full production, that would still place it in early 2019. And if they have ambitious plans for this game, say 2.5-3 years full production like DAI, it could wind up being late 2019/early 2020. As far as time between games is concerned, Bethesda goes a long time between releases of its major franchises and it hasn't hurt their sales at all. The New IP will be another major RPG and hopefully help ease the wait a bit...

Sadness. 2020? There are no other games for me, DA is the only game that ever makes me want to play. I tried ME, I don't want to be a space Soldier. Skyrim bored me after a month. I actually like the Walking Dead Games but... DA has ruined them for me a bit, and pretty much every other game. I don't want to grind through someone else's story that never changes, I don't actually like combat. Combat is the price I pay to see the content I'm after, it's always been that way. The only reason I'm using trials now in DAI is because it's going to make me enjoy the story slower instead of consuming it in large gulps. And they called this new IP "contemporary" and had a picture of something that suspiciously looks like some sort of Fallout 4 trailer house. I tried 2 or 3 out of all the Fallouts, and I'm not sure getting to make out with someone even as handsome as Cullen would make that setting for me. And I recently spent 12 hours ish watching game play and reading reviews of like over 100 RPG games to try to find anything that was even close to Dragon Age. And I thought I found one, played it's demo, thought I was onto something...then realized after purchase that I already felt lonely with no companions to go chat up and dress up. So, if anyone else is like me, then this is a major bummer to hear every time someone says it: that the next installment won't even be close to realease for another THREE years. Of course, there is the other three games to happily bide my time with. They didn't disappear.

We don't know how much work they can get done with just the core team, so their progress could surprise you. I'd still say late 2018 is the absolute earliest you can expect anything, but if we're lucky there will be some sort of spinoff or other dragon age media happening to tide us over (Comics have been announced). My hope is that the new IP will be urban fantasy rather than post-apocalyptic (A genre that I've really lost enthusiasm for), so I'm holding out for that.

Yeah, I know that's not great news for us DA fans, but I get why BioWare might want to diversify/explore something new after 10 years. But if you think the wait for DA4 is rough, just imagine what it's like for the Elder Scrolls fans. Bethesda wants to create not one, but two new major games before working on the next ES. Todd Howard joked how Skyrim came out in 11/11/11, so the next ES would be out in 22/22/22. That is likely close to the truth. ~10 years between releases is probably what you're looking at.

HeimdallUrban fantasy, like Batman? or...? Technically, urban fantasy can be a lot of things. Often it's kinda like Harry Potter or Buffy or Dresden, in the sense that there are supernatural elements to the world that are hidden from day to day normal people. People in the more urban of those setting tend to end up in a lot of abandoned buildings, so that's kinda what I'm hoping for.

Anything less that 2 years full production and I'd start to be concerned about the quality of the game... Hopefully we'll see a spin-off game though. Even if wasn't a game I was particularly interested in (like a Tactics game), if they felt they could grow the franchise that way I'd be all for it. And hopefully we'll also see a novel or two along with new comics series.

There was a book in the works for Fenris but then Gaider left. I don't know if they're going to totally scrap it or try to rework it for a release later.
It's also nice to hear about comics. I liked the Alistair/Maric story arc. I've heard Magekiller was bad (but ordered it yesterday anyway.)

And hopefully we'll also see a novel or two along with new comics series. My hope would be that they at least have the whole game planned and everything set to launch into full production. And since they don't have to learn a new engine, maybe full production won't take as long. Still, late 2018 would be seriously pushing it. I imagine people need to be coming off MEA at this point, and there was some comment about the new IP being "more finished than expected" so we could see more resources allocated to Dragon Age soon.

One potential positive from an extended pre-production period is if they plan to go full-on phototgrammetry in the next game. They'll have plenty of time to run around the world capturing landscapes/props/etc.

The second issue of Magekiller is worth a look, mostly because it take place in Minrathous and provides some interesting imagery of Tevinter.

I've thought about this and come to the conclusion that Magekiller is essentially Greg Rucka's fan fiction, complete with his own Gary Stu/Mary Sue action duo. Well-drawn, competently-written fan fiction, but fan fiction all the same.
For that reason, I could recommend reading it for free but I can't recommend spending any money on it, because you should never pay to read fan fic. Get it cheaply if you must read it.

Did they ever come out and say, "Only one game per year", or is/was that mostly an assumption? (truly asking, not being confrontational ) The reason I ask is that - at least in the case of the new IP - it is just that. New. It is "untested", so to speak. It may only make it as a single game, or it will be a popular game world to keep developing. However, they won't necessarily know until it releases. With that in mind, they may not use the "One game per year" as a hard and fast rule. Granted, it will all depend on whether they have the resources (time/people) to do this (i.e. finish up the new IP AND work on DA4), but it doesn't seem to rule out the possibility of DA4 being released either end of 2018/early 2019. Admittedly, this is me hoping.

There was a book in the works for Fenris but then Gaider left. I don't know if they're going to totally scrap it or try to rework it for a release later. It's also nice to hear about comics. I liked the Alistair/Maric story arc. I've heard Magekiller was bad (but ordered it yesterday anyway.) I didn't know about any of that, and it's been cruel finding out like this: like showing me a puppy and then killing it in front of me I'm sorry. My experience is that I heard about it...and then a month later they killed it. So, it was like a puppy I had time to get attached to.

Ok, you win, your experience was worse Especially cuz it was Fenris! He's my canon DA2 romance now. Oh how my fangirl heart longed to hear his voice throughout an amazing adventure where he was the focus.

Which is why I'm surprised both Bethesda and Bioware aren't moving more towards a COD/Destiny/Madden style mode of franchise. Have a yearly installment for each franchise, but skip years for "deep story content." The "good stuff" might only come out every 3 or 4 years, but in between are additional combat arenas, maps, raids, MP expansions, gear, mini-DLCs (no cutscene content), etc. It's true that a big release every 10 years doesn't necessarily hurt sales of that latest release, but a) they aren't making any or much money in between (Skyrim being a remarkable exception) and they put all of their eggs in one basket, so if the game isn't as well received by hardcore fans as they hoped (*cough* Fallout 4 *cough*), it's a giant 10 year disappointment for at least some people. Personally, Bethesda lost some of my loyalty with FO4. I didn't buy Far Harbor because of it. Speaking of Skyrim, short of a yearly installment franchise, open up the Bioware games to modding. Please. Spend the extra year it would take to support modding as a first-class feature and you'll milk 10 years of revenue out of it. It's inconceivable that this hasn't happened already. I don't care how complicated the technology is, if you can release first-party DLC, modders can mod. It's not like it's impossible.

^^ Just to add to the discussion: Bethesda's Fall Out series and The Elder Scrolls are all self-contained stories. I felt that Skyrim, more of a sandbox to begin with, had an ending - if they never come out with another one, the story would not suffer for it. 10 years between self-contained stories is totally different from stories left with cliffhangers. Most people simply would have forgotten. "Who's that Solas fellow again?" *shrug* "Google it." "Oh...he's an Elven god that wants to destroy the world" "Good enough for me" So much context is lost . Either way, I've got plenty of games to keep me going.
