*gasp* How dare you, you monster! (JK )
Cassandra actually says that in-game (she called them "dung monsters") in a banter with Blackwall. I just about died laughing.
Seriously!? Ugh, curse you banter bug! I've missed so much because of that darn thing. Thanks for the info.

^ I never tried herding the golden halla on a horse. I felt I have more control on foot. Response time to wolves suddenly appearing and pouncing on the halla is faster too. So no horse for that particular quest. I always use the horse at Hissing Wastes; most of the time I just let it trot and admire the graceful animation. Other places I would also ride is Western Approach. I did the unthinkable and tried to use the stronger higher leap of the horse to get to a chest I see right on top of the ruin where the last camp is pitched under. That was the last resort. I'm pretty sure that chest is empty though. The poor horse fell a long way. I thought it'd die but it didn't. However, the heavy thump (all four legs buckled), the whinny that sounded distressed and the struggle to rise had me apologising to the fellow even though he's not real.
It's not empty and I've taken as much as an hour to make the jump properly.

I'm probably the odd one out using horses in the game considering their laughable galloping speed (that's the only bad thing about them) but I enjoyed watching the animation of the horse. They don't get stuck in funny ways when they're called or moving around. Well, as someone who's spent a decade on a horse's back I have to say - judging from DAI model, Thedosian horses are MASSIVE. Like, about the size of a Shire horse if not bigger, judging from relative height of a rider. Even Iron Bull barely reaches their withers.Which is why I believe they are so big. One size has to fit all. It would be silly for my Qunari Inquistor or The Iron Bull to be scrunched up a like a jockey, or dragging their toes through the mud. On the flip side, my poor dwarf has to do yoga stretches before and after riding.

Shalynn McCallum @shamccallum94 @bioware @patrickweekes you should hire me on to advise on your horses for DA4 as an equestrian it kills me to hear a bay called a chestnut Patrick Weekes @patrickweekesIt killed all the horse lovers on the team, too. The fun of art and VO coming in at different times. Sorry! Just as long as they don't call my Greater Nuggalope a cob. She clearly is a destrier.

Well I suppose they could have just done what World of Warcraft does, which is scale the mount to the size of the character model. There are limits, though. While the tauren (the largest, cow people) have gigantic mounts, and gnomes (the smallest at about three feet) have small ones, it still looks reasonable while you're playing. There are some mounts that are just naturally smaller, so it is amusing to see a tauren riding one of these types, and vice versa as well with the larger mounts.

Since mounts don't work in tac cam mode, I rarely used them. The only time I used my horse was in the Hissing Wastes since that area was so massive I liked having the extra speed to get around (and the unending desert landscape didn't trigger my motion sickness). I thought they were pretty well done and definitely better than the Skyrim horses, but if they don't return for "Hypothetical" DA4 I won't be too upset.

What I'd like to know is if they originally intended that you could battle from the back of the horse and then didn't have time to implement it. Otherwise I really couldn't see the point of those riding perks you could get through Cullen since the horse immediately threw you off if you came under attack and you couldn't fight from the saddle. I never took them as they looked to me to be a waste of time.
Now if they allowed the option to fight from horseback in DA4, that would be interesting. The Tevinter armies apparently use dracolisk mounts and the current Archon's family have their own special breed of the creature. With us likely to be involved in an outright war between the Tevinter and the Qun, we have got to at least see some cinematic cut scenes with these in.
I've been replaying DAO and one of the things that struck me is that the DAI battle scenes are nothing like as impressive as the Battle of Ostagar. That still had the capacity to move me even after all this time and it set the tone for the rest of the game. Mind you, there are a lot of places in DAO that can still touch my emotions in a way that few scenes in DAI do, whether it is the sheer creepy horror of meeting Hespith or the heroic speeches and encounters of the Battle of Denerim. For me, most of the really moving bits of DAI were connected to my personal life, not the events in the wider world and the final showdown with Corypheus was something of an anti-climax. Mind you that makes sense when you consider that the real antagonist was standing there staring sadly at his broken orb, so Corypheus was a gigantic red herring - hah hah, you think you've saved the world but not really.

I somehow don't think so. In an interview, David Gaider was asked why there was no dog in the game. His response was that we got a horse. The first step to doing anything with a horse was to get one in a game, and then move on from there. DAI was the first mount game. This mount issue for succeeding games is tricky, though. I've gotten the impression that the feature wasn't very popular with many players. There are any number of reasons, from the banter bug, to the party disappearing, to the unrealism (horse just appearing and disappearing), the clunky movement, the lack of things to DO besides just ride around*, and so on; the reasons will vary among players. So, do the developers try to iterate on those things and make horses better in the next game, or do they cut their loses, say that mounts didn't "work" in DAI, and never have them again? We can't know their thoughts on the matter. * I think it would have been fun to have a repeatable race mini game. Yeah, it seems somewhat Zelda-ish, but I definitely would have tried to beat my own time, or go for some sort of achievement.

That sounds promising. At least they were doing it with a view to possibly using mounted combat in the future. I understand that when you have never done something like that, you'd want to start with just riding around to see how that worked and any problems associated with it and then use the knowledge you gain to see if mounted combat could be made to work in a future game. Obviously a lot depends on resources and if mounted combat wasn't vital to the game or the plot, then it would likely be the first thing to be dropped but at least they were thinking about the possibility, so that's good enough for me.
I definitely feel that if there are going to any more of those large desert expanses like we had in the Hissing Wastes, then you really do need a quicker means of crossing them than simply on foot.

Still astonishes me that they use Twitter for business messages. Although they may have Slack internally and we just don't know about it, and they integrated it with Twitter.
