I loved the Deep Roads and learning stuff about Shale by finding the anvil... Really hated having to choose a new king for the dwarves, though. Especially as it seemed very short-sighted of them, as phoray pointed out. Sure, let's let the darkspawn wipe us out while we try to sort out our new king!  Since I played a Cousland I went for Bhelen because it would be an advantage for the humans to have more trade with the dwarves. Maybe not the best choice for the dwarves themselves, but that's what you get when you can't solve your problems yourself. |

Since I played a Cousland I went for Bhelen because it would be an advantage for the humans to have more trade with the dwarves. Maybe not the best choice for the dwarves themselves, but that's what you get when you can't solve your problems yourself. The dwarves aren't in immediate danger of being wiped out on account of the Blight though -- at least in the short term. The game repeatedly points out that when there's a blight on the surface, Orzammar actually gets a brief reprieve from the Darkspawn as they're topside attacking the surfacers and thus there are fewer in the Deep Roads. (I think it's even mentioned that Blights are ideal times for dwarves to go foraging in the Deep Roads to recover thaigs and retrieve some of their lost history.) Of course in the long run a Blight means more surface darkspawn which means more prey which means they'll gradually increase their numbers, but that would likely take decades if not generations. So nonetheless, it makes sense that a the dwarves would be preoccupied with their own petty politics at the very start of a new Blight and be more focused on that than stopping it. As for Bhelen, it's pretty heavily implied that the Dwarves are much better off with him as king economically, socially, and politically than they are with Harrowmont. |

Well, it's really just the Dwarven nobility and warriors who don't want change. And why would they if they're on top of the food chain? The casteless and the middle castes are certainly better off with the change Behlen brings. |
