My dad didn't even end up getting to Haven. He couldn't remember how the combat worked at all. He said he woke up very early in the morning once to practice but he just ended up confused. Him not understanding English didn't make it any easier. Poor dad. He was a little broody about that, I think he wanted to surprise me with how far he got.  Years ago I tried to get my Dad to play video games, so we could share more interests. I set him up with Bioshock. ...it was embarrassing. I probably should have been more patient, but my dad couldn't seem to master the idea of moving the analog sticks in different directions at the same time. He could shove them both in one direction, but was totally unable to move more than one at a time in a different direction (After looking down to make sure he was pressing the right one). His coordination was aweful. I think MY frustration might have put him off trying again... Don't feel bad, my entire family is like that. My mom is very competitive, there's not a tabletop board game or physical game (croquet, shuffleboard, etc.) she doesn't seriously get into and try to master. But video games? Fuhggeddaboutit. My dad keeps asking questions like, "Why did he do that?" -- "Because you pushed the X, dad" -- "But I didn't want him to do that!" ... (facepalm) But then they watched me play Flower on the PS3 and ... lemme try, lemme try! That game they totally dug and enjoyed. I had similarly good results with Little Big Planet. So it depends on the game. |

Sorry if I'm derailing the thread too much. This will be my last post on the subject. Years ago I tried to get my Dad to play video games, so we could share more interests. I set him up with Bioshock. ...it was embarrassing. I probably should have been more patient, but my dad couldn't seem to master the idea of moving the analog sticks in different directions at the same time. He could shove them both in one direction, but was totally unable to move more than one at a time in a different direction (After looking down to make sure he was pressing the right one). His coordination was aweful. I think MY frustration might have put him off trying again.. I sympathize with your frustration. Sometimes I forget dad is getting old and that his memory isn't what it used to be, and that can leave both of us feeling bad, so I'm not going to try again with him. Of course I don't know if it has anything to do with age for your dad, but Bioshock does sound a little challenging for someone who has never gamed before - back when I first started, I couldn't play anything remotely resembling shooters. It's taken me a few years to get good at them. Gilli It's always a little disappointing when people don't like the dialogue/story/lore in DAO. I want to nerd to them about it but they're just like 'meh'. To each their own I guess, but they're missing out on so much of what makes the game good.  PapaCharlie9 Your parents sound cute. |

My last post on this too, You're probably right about Bioshock, but I figured it would be more accessible to him on easy than tackling RPG systems or juggling resources in an RTS game (The three genres most of my games fall into). Still, I've always had a bit of a knack for picking up shooters quickly, which I guess I took for granted. Eh, maybe someday I'll spend some time with my dad and introduce him to something slower and more methodical, and be more patient about it (I was like 13-16 last time). |

Ooooh, I get it. Kinda wonder why they did this as an announcement. Just trying to attract some people to apply for the positions they have open at the moment, I think. That is kind of what their blog post is aiming for. I'm sure a lot of the BioWare Twitter account's followers have a strong interest in games and may have the skill sets needed to work there. |

Sorry if I'm derailing the thread too much. This will be my last post on the subject. I sympathize with your frustration. Sometimes I forget dad is getting old and that his memory isn't what it used to be, and that can leave both of us feeling bad, so I'm not going to try again with him. Of course I don't know if it has anything to do with age for your dad, but Bioshock does sound a little challenging for someone who has never gamed before - back when I first started, I couldn't play anything remotely resembling shooters. It's taken me a few years to get good at them. Gilli It's always a little disappointing when people don't like the dialogue/story/lore in DAO. I want to nerd to them about it but they're just like 'meh'. To each their own I guess, but they're missing out on so much of what makes the game good. PapaCharlie9 Your parents sound cute. My last post on this too, You're probably right about Bioshock, but I figured it would be more accessible to him on easy than tackling RPG systems or juggling resources in an RTS game (The three genres most of my games fall into). Still, I've always had a bit of a knack for picking up shooters quickly, which I guess I took for granted. Eh, maybe someday I'll spend some time with my dad and introduce him to something slower and more methodical, and be more patient about it (I was like 13-16 last time). My apologies for derailing the thread just a little longer (that's what I get for not checking the BSN yesterday), but my dad is actually the one who introduced me to video games, specifically Baldur's Gate. I have many fond memories of sitting in a chair next to his and watching him play. I had the strategy guide in my lap, so my main job was helping him figure out where to go and what to do. My second job was alerting him when one of the characters (usually poor Xan) was about to die, which probably explains my love of playing healers. Then when I got my own computer, Dad hooked them up to a TCP/IP network so we could play together. Without my dad, I may never have discovered Bioware games or fantasy RPGs at all. Unfortunately, Dad's motion sickness is much worse than my own. Even Neverwinter Nights makes him sick, so we can't play anything even remotely new. However, we still replay Baldur's Gate every few years or so, which is probably why that series is so dear to my heart. Hopefully I'll be able to pass out my favorite games in the same way to my kids someday. Wow, that got much sappier than intended... Hey, that bronze dragon sure is neat! Can we kill it in DA4?  |
