I have no idea whether it's actually possible to make a good-looking Sara Ryder face with this damned thing, but I certainly haven't managed it. The problem: first, I want a smooth skin texture, and apparently the skin texture comes with the preset and can't be changed separately. The only face with a smooth skin texture is #1, but then I'm stuck with an Asian face, which I don't want for my first Ryder. Second, I can't affect the overall shape of the face very much. Adjust one feature, it creates angles where I don't want them. Third, I can't affect the mouth shape, which is perhaps the most characteristic feature of any face, and I like none of the options. Third, the jawline and the chin outline appear rugged, as if she got one punch to the face too many, and none of the options change that. Fourth, I can't affect the nose shape, which appears again, to be set by the preset without any option to change it.
Crap. Crapcrap. Crapcrapcrap.....
I've been playing Bioware games forever, and I never had such problems. If all these things I can't affect really aren't changeable, rather than just me being blind for a feature, then I have to mark this game down very significantly before I even started to play.
So, is there a way out of these problems, or am I stuck with a face which has at least a third of features I don't like?
I never would've thought it, but every single one of my femSheps looked significantly better than anything I've managed to create here.
Edit: Or maybe the hard shadows in the CC are the problem and it looks all better in-game? *Hopeful*

I dunno. I picked the last one (head 9) and was stuck with that. I couldn't customize her, I couldn't pick custom head, I couldn't do shit.
Oh, and head 9 is the only caucasian female. My dad turned out to be black. Go team.

I am really pleased that my own plans more or less worked out, but the texture thing is annoying, and the texture of my preferred preset would not have been my first choice. However, it doesn't seem to be as apparent in-game as it is in the cc, so small favors I guess. But yeah no getting around the fixed nose, eye, ear and mouth stuff. That we can't even alter the under/overbite on any of them is problematic.

Because most models end up with golf-ball eyes and jaws like a shovel, I looked for the model with the smallest eyes and mouth and went from there. I ended up with a character that just about managed dodging the ugly stick, but only just, in some lights she resembles a monkey, but I think this is the best I am going to get.
They must have spent a great deal of time going through every configuration to make sure no one ended up with a good looking character.

Not being able to make an actual redhead annoyed me. I can have day-glo red, green, yellow or blue hair, but not an actual natural redhead or auburn. This was very sadface for me.

And...who would EVER want to have one of these non-designed tattoo designs? Psychedelic bubbles that don't even follow the face shape? This looks as if it was a visual bug. If it isn't, I question the basic competence of whoever made them. Also, I ended up with this one: At least I couldn't find a way to improve her at this point, which is a statement in itself. In DAI, I kept adjusting my Inquisitor for an hour more because I could see there was both space and the technical options for improvements. I'm not seeing that here. I'm not content with the jawline which I can't affect without causing craters, nor the cheeks (the same), nor the mouth shape which I can't affect at all, and she looks too young but if I make the face longer the features don't adapt so there's a significant uncanny valley effect, and it's the same if I try to manually adapt the features - the eyes, the nose and the mouth just can't be placed so that a longer face looks natural. But at least she looks halfway decent overall, and the the hair hides some of the stuff I don't like. Hopefully she looks ok in the game.

Oh, and head 9 is the only caucasian female. My dad turned out to be black. Go team. Yeah, same here. I'm definitely not my father's daughter, though they managed to match the eye color of all things, which looks ultra-weird. Also, my father is really ugly. I've never seen such an ugly black face in RL. Why am I surprised, though? Most of the presets look ugly. LOL, something really went wrong here. It's as if they tested only with the default faces.

Yeah, I hear ya. I tried to make a normal average sara ryder with ginger hair close in style to Commander Shep but it's impossible to change her jaw among other features. Bioware really messed up the CC that I had to use the male default Ryder because the presets and options were seriously lacking. However let's hope Bioware is true to their word that they're working to improve the CC. It's impossible to create the character you want with the CC right now, you're stuck with facial features you can make very little changes to.

You realize the Ryder twins are only 22, right? (Er, technically they're 656, but were 22 went they went into stasis) In spite of your frustrations with the CC, I do hope you'll find some enjoyment in your playthrough.

My dad turned out to be black. Go team. I dunno about black ryder dad, but not being able to customize the head is a glitch. I had the same problem and to fix it I went out of the customize option completely then went back in and double clicked on the head I wanted right away. Then it worked without a hitch. It is weird tho.

I actually opted for a brownish red, but its pretty muted. I can't believe there is no natural redhead option lol. It bothers me so much especially as the head 5 has freckles! She'd be so effing adorable if I could have given her red hair.

I think a lot of the difficulty in the CC, is because as you create Ryder, the game is altering the face of brother or sister and father. It's a good idea in theory, but hard to pull off. I can recall creating a Human Noble character in DA:O that was quite different than the parents.
Yes, the CC could have been set up better and easier to use, but it's what's available. I'm guessing that eventually, some patient people will create some great characters that they'll share.
But I think there could have been more hair options and a better coloring setup.

I made one that is growing on me the more I play. That happened to me as well. The more I see her, the more attached I get. I'm pretty lucky, I guess, that I don't go into new games with preconceived ideas about what I want my character to look like. I muck around with whatever a game provides in the way of a CC until I find something I like, and get on with it.

Yah, just like in all the past games, where they've come out with a hair patch. Think they have enough on their plate right now putting out fires.

From what I understand Alec Ryder's appearance always matches Scott's preset, even if Sara is the player character. Or at least that's what some other people are saying. I haven't tried it out.

Pick the asian preset and then go from there. This is what I managed to make. Black eyeliner and eyeshadow at about 70 opacity really brings out the eyes.

I will probably go default male for the first time ever. I've seen a bunch of female Ryders I like ok but no male I found particularly appealing. And I don't want to play female because I'm not very fond of the voice. Default Scott while having a baby face looks cute at least when not derping around thanks to the amazing animations.
I mean, since this game is apparently a rich college kids in space sitcom anyway, might as well go with it and use the default barely-old-enough-to-shave face. That way I'll get default Alec too, right? The only decent-looking human in the game.
Maybe by the time I get to play in a month or so they'll have patched it. (They won't.) Or there will be a bag over the head mod for conversations (and sex scenes). That would help too. Seriously, I want a helmet always-on option. If Shepard can have shower sex fully dressed, we should be allowed to have sex in fully armor in MEA.
