If you're just starting out, then Gold is where you should be, you will get more credits to unlock stuff faster, making you far more viable a teammate for those tough Bronze matches.

Remember, you can be the team medic, just stay hidden and revive your teammates whenever they require it. In turn, they can kill everything and do all the objectives.

You need to buy at least $1,000 worth of packs before you will have the characters and weapons to be allowed into the game at all. If you are not willing to spend your hard-earned cash on the game then clearly you are not a serious player and you should GFTO.
