I think the "cyberscan" is something they've done previously. I know they experimented with facial capture which shows in some scenes Funny enough it all looks terrible and the Sara gun scene is not in the final game (or maybe it's just Sara's exclusive moment) and my guess is that BioWare planned to have more of these things. The staff for face-capture performancing is quite large in the credits so I can't believe it would take that many to only have the sparse 5-6 scenes in the game that seems to use this. This probably means they started lacking facial animations for other scenes and came up short with the algorithmic based animations. I sometimes have a hunch that they intended for all non-cinematic scenes to use the default algorithmic animation system and before DA:I got fan-backlash for the lack of cinematics (which they addressed in DLCs) I bet they also intended for Andromeda's planet areas to have exclusively non-cinematic stuff for quests, so the request to make proper animations for a much bigger number of scenes probably came really late and wasn't in the original plans for the game's production. As for the faces, yeah, they just screwed up. As he says in the video there was some very high-paid dude on the project who insisted the facial animations wouldn't matter. Probably Mac if I know him right. He just needed his paycheck and wanted the crunch cycle to stop so he could chill I guess. The Sara gun scene is in the final game as Narrative Action (renegade interrupt, basically).

This actually makes Bio Montreal look better. A production plan like this would have to have been approved by EA management. I wouldn't be surprised if it was outright forced on the Montreal office; I've been in similar situations. If EA Budapest or whoever dropped the ball, that's on them.

I am not sure that "political correctness" equates to poor facial animations. Having an attractive Sarah Ryder as opposed to a gorgeous super model Sarah Ryder is fine but the poor animations were equitably distributed to all.
I have to say Geralt was no movie star and he did just fine, so a little infusion of reality in video games in not new.
BTW - Is the higher up Bioware or EA?

I truly get the desire to create more unconventional female models. But scanning real people, poorly so I might add, and then not allowing enough flexibility in the CC was a huge mistake. I don't want to play a female Ryder who looks like a librarian with an extra chromosome. It was also a mistake to not have a more iconic/heroic default face for Sarah. Just from a PR standpoint. As to the general problem of NPC design, if this video is true, then it does seem that company politics and feelings got in the way of doing a proper job of things.

I thought Sara's first trailer appearance was pretty well-received. You didn't? Given the amount of memes and mockery specifically around Sarah Ryder, I don't think she was well received at all. The truth is many people relate to idealized beauty. and in CCs, they want the ability to create that as well.

I thought Sara's first trailer appearance was pretty well-received. You didn't? It was received with much fan faire and appreciation simply for the fact that it was a Mass Effect game. In terms of her personally, no. The internet ripped her a new asshole. BioWare said that they'd fix it, which given a couple'a months they could do.

Not an excuse. If EA forced their hand to release early and they had no time. Sounds logical they would outsource to finish a certain area while they focused on other areas.

I totally agree with you that they messed up her animations so that she actually looks very odd/weird/unattractive at various points. In general I do like to see attractive protagonists - (hahaha if i wanted ugly, I need only look in the mirror ) But other than the weird facial animations, I like her face. I think she is cute and spunky looking and could be a very iconic Sarah Ryder.

The nerds became out of touch with the market as they loaded the game up with a buncha stupid features most people don't want.
Scanning for crap Open worlds to get lotta Mako use Acquiring loot for crafting
etc
Sometimes when I'm bored I'll go watch conversations from the trilogy. That's ME's strongest point. Dialogue.
Stuff we all care about.

DA:I was a hit in both critical reception, sales and with most fans. I honestly can't remember the names of the companions in DA:I. A Bioware game with characters I found so bland and uninteresting (which is the same problem I have with ME:A ) that I can't remember their damn names has a major issue imo.

5 years development time, with an existing well established engine. Not all engines are built to handle rpgs just like not all rpg focused engines could handle a shooter. It stated by Bioware themselves that they had trouble with Frostbite while developing DA:I and I imagine they also had problems with ME:A.

I'll put the DAI lineup against any Bio game's squadmates. This topic is about as subjective as it gets.
"Excuse" is a lousy thread title, since this isn't something that EA is saying.

So who did they outsource the writing to? Casey "It's not going to be an ending where you choose A, B, or C" Hudson. Some of the humor falls flat but there's nothing in ME:A as embarrasing as Sex Doll EDI and edgelord Kai Leng.
