I think how much a squad mate dies depends on your ability to control and manage the field. It really comes to player skill. If your player correctly, using combos, directing squadmates to help take out big threats, just paying attention they don't die even on insane hardly at all or ever. It's only when I'm screwing around and not handling my business that they die. Except Jaal, Jaal is just...an idiot sometimes .

I keep looking at their trees for some reason and lamenting, even though I know I dont have to. Same problem with Scott I'm applying points to slots I don't use. It doesn't take long to max out a functional build, or two. If you intend to create numerous builds, though, of course you're going to be investing in skills you aren't currently using. My Ryder is currently Level 96, and I'm topping off the last skill (Charge) for a Vanguard-style build. To this point, my mains have been an "Adept", a caster Engineer (using Sentinel Profile), and an occassional Tac-Cloak Infiltrator (with Turbocharge and Energy Drain). Swapping Favorites, and playstyles, isn't just of mechanical benefit. It also keeps gameplay varied. There are still several builds I've yet to try without being overly creative. I'm sure I'll think of additional builds, in time. This wouldn't be possible without the uncapped, unrestricted character advancement. As to the main topic, regarding companions, I find that they only drop in really tough fights against heavy opponents. (I play Insanity difficulty.) In general, they're pretty good at soaking damage, priming combos, and keeping themselves in the fight. I think these companions are mechanically much better than ME2/3 companions. The only points in which they're weaker are that we can't hand them OP, DLC weapons to beat the game for us; and we can't directly control their power usage. Yeah, I get that. Helps for different profile setting but I'm finding that hitting level 50 plus level 5 profiles makes you pretty much unstoppable even on insanity. So it kinda loses some punch. Maybe enemies should level up once you get to level 50.

Can you imagine if SAM constantly said "take cover", "switch weapons", "use throw", "No! Not on him. You have to take his shields down first", "Pathfinder, you're bleeding", "Pathfinder, Cora is down again", "Pathfinder, you suck"?

Maybe enemies should level up once you get to level 50. I'm not sure it's even the myriad skills that make things lop-sided. I think we just become so proficient with the game, at some point, that steamrolling Insanity is a given. The enemies definitely seem to level with us, or else they'd just melt under fire. Once you are fully decked in Level X gear, and have 100+ hours of gameplay behind you, though, leveling only helps so much. I find that, at Level 96, enemies are still putting up a fight. The issue is that their resistance is futile. I shoot, combo and move too well for them to really touch me, and I rarely even lose health. (I am not optimized for survivability, either.) I can say that it's still more "sporting" than ME3 Insanity, even at Level 96. ME3 was a sad little joke, in terms of difficulty. At least these enemies seem to be trying. They could definitely have made (or kept) Insanity on the tougher side, but it's progress from where we were 5 years ago.

Its hard to see ME3 style combat even coming close to competing once you get there. The number of combos you can pull off now is whats actually insane about it. When you get your timing right you can pull off one combo for every power you use and that was where the skill tree lost its shine for me. Not that I don't occasionally get my butt handed to me as a reminder I'm not invincible.

When you get your timing right you can pull off one combo for every power you use and that was where the skill tree lost its shine for me. Not that I don't occasionally get my butt handed to me as a reminder I'm not invincible. Agreed. I've been using my Sentinel (Incinerate / Remnant VI / Energy Drain) build a lot, on this playthrough. In the beginning, I thought I'd keep it basic, and not try to optimize too much. I immediately realized that this build is extremely optimized, in that it combos with every power used. Plus, anything with Energy Drain is extremely tough, so I guess I am optimized for survival, though it wasn't my conscious goal. The next two builds I intend to try are a weapon/Combat-focused build, and a brief time with the brokenly good Vanguard (AF-Charge-ED) build. I've not tried the Vanguard, yet, and I at least want to experience it in action. (I won't build the "Piranha of Doom" that everyone builds, though. Bioconverter is insane, and illogical.) The Soldier-style build will be fun, I think, since it may not be quite as easy to endlessly chain combos. I haven't tried, though, so I may be overlooking something obvious. The weapons specialist build means building all new gear, which will be fun. I've only used N7 Armor and the Heleus Icon Armor, thus far. It will be fun to step into a new look and gameplay style. Sorry, guys. I forgot that this is a "squadmates" discussion. I'll cease derailing, now, I guess.
