Live-service games gotta be planned ahead of time Lest you end up with a game that doesn't support new content injection and delivery, yes. But to think it's all planned out with content is likely myth. They have maybe a solid story background along they can develop and a couple of content they may want to develop and release in the nearer future. No way they would be able to forecast what is popular and generates cash in 10 years.
It's just that: The system for long-term service is in place and they have a skeleton along to develop. If this was a spacesim they might start out with Earth and orbit, then plan for Luna, a Lagrange space station and further off Mars. Depending on the success they have ideas about the other planets and maybe people would like to venture to other stars. But if it doesn't sell as expected it's gonna get canned.

I guess it depends what you mean by 'it doesn't sell'. At launch? At all? In this day and age - of post-release updates and live service - any well-supported game has a decent shot at being 'sellable' even if launch numbers are not satisfying. |

Jos @sjoszThis morning I learned that apparently there is a term at work for how punishing combat is. When it approaches sufficiently punishing levels, people are apparently "getting Jossed". Someone in the meeting where we looked at the mission I've been putting together: "Oh you're nice in person, you're just not nice at players when you make combat" In my defense, I was specifically told I had a kitchen sink to throw at the player in this mission, and so I did. The whole sink.
Jos tweets stuff like this out so often that it makes me want to play his original concepts for encounters rather than the often watered-down versions that get put into the final release. |
