Polygon: BioWare’s next new series launches due by March 2018

A new, original intellectual property from BioWare will launch by the end of this fiscal year, Electronic Arts announced on a conference call for investors. The action title is expected by March 31, 2018, when the company’s 2017 fiscal year ends.

EA CEO Andrew Wilson teased details about the game, which is being worked on by members of the Mass Effect franchise. The game will have an online component of some kind, encouraging players to interact in a completely new setting.

“It’s an action-adventure, not RPG,” Wilson added during the Q&A portion of the call. That’s a change of pace for BioWare, which is best known for its role-playing game franchises.

Studio fans can still expect to see “the great RPG character development and story progression that BioWare is known for,” Wilson continued.

That’s about all we know about the BioWare game, however. BioWare vice president Aaryn Flynn included further details in a blog post on the studio’s website following the call.

“In 2012, we began crafting a new universe full of new characters, stories, and gameplay,” Flynn wrote. “Our ambition is simple: Draw upon 20+ years of development knowledge and lessons to create something fun and new for you to enjoy with your friends.”

More details are coming in the future, Flynn added.

It won't be a MMO, since that genre is in heavy weather. The market seems full and people that are just looking for endless mind numbing progression switch to MOBA's (see SWTOR, the hard core fans rather have two new raids/opps than story content).

It won't be a MOBA, because that's even too mind numbing for BioWare's honor.

Apparantly it's more action-adventure than RPG, but those two genres are merging anyway into one genre. Uncharted got a dialogue wheel, they all have big open maps with a lot of similar 'chores' to fulfil (capture the tower, wipe the bandit camp), skill trees, etc.

The mp aspect that's underlined might be co-op'ish, like Destiny/The Division, although those games aren't the big money makers they're supposed to be. At the same time, development started in 2012 when they didn't know how well it would work yet.

Difficult! I hope it's something genius and truly new.

Thanks for the info Hungr! I'm not too thrilled that it's not an RPG, but many people might argue that the Mass Effect games aren't RPGs either, so I'll try to stay optimistic. They said the focus is still on story and character development and that's what I care about. So yay, only 'bout one more year!

It isn't. Alexis Kennedy - who has joined Mike Laidlaw and Patrick Weekes as 'senior writer' recently - has revealed in September last year that the 'unannounced game' (wink-wink) is worked on already.

Yep, the MP aspect is off-putting, but the fact that it's still apparently story-heavy and with focus on characters keeps me interested.

The action-adventure bit makes me think of something with Zelda-ish elements. I imagine the not RPG comment refers more to the stat and combat side rather than our ability to create our own characters and have dialogue options (More Bioware's staple)

They literally say in the Polygon article that the game has 'some sort of online component' and we don't even know what it is - yet people are quick to assume that it must be a full multiplayer thingy :huh:

I don't think they are quick to assume, I'm sure people are still hopeful that it isn't just a multiplayer thing. They're just expressing a bit of worry over it, there's nothing wrong with that. We've been waiting for this game and speculating about it for a long time, after all.
