I've been pretty down on Dylan/Anthem when it looked/looks like Destiny, but I think Hrungr and Heimdall might be right. Why have Bioware make a Destiny killer if you aren't going to put at least some Bioware story magic into it? And it wouldn't take much to crush Destiny -- since it's pretty much devoid of a cohesive narrative. Even a slightly decent narrative would be a (potentially) big competitive advantage. I say "potentially" because I'm unsure how much the larger coop-action gaming market cares about story. I know what most of the hardcore Destiny grinders care about is the loot progression and not being cheated out of their invested hours every time a new update comes out that gives noobs gear that's equally as powerful as what it took you 100 hours to grind out. That's the thing about evergreen grinding games, how do you balance the gear and rewards economy when you have 100+ hour lifers competing with noobs? How do you keep the bar low enough to attract noobs, but don't penalize the pros?

That Mech-Wizard definitely has my attention, and I'm not one to gripe over a game company doing things differently, even if I liked their standard formula. Thing is, playing a game only takes so many hours, making a game takes years, and experienced teams are going to want to do different things and push their own boundaries as creators. It's art.
That all said, I'm still hesitant on pressing that hype button because of the MP. All I'd need is for them to say that there's the option for AI-controlled teammates (preferably banter-enabled!) and I'm in 100%. It really looks like a lot of fun, and I'm super interested in learning more about the story and setting. And MECH WIZARD. *Grabby hands*
While I'd love for some other BioWare staples, a lack of them doesn't necessarily mean I'd be uninterested in the game. The issue for me is that I can only play games sporadically, and I don't think I'd be able to handle the stress I'd get over my own performance as a player when there's an audience. An audience counting on me to be good. And social. Sorry, but my job requires a certain high level of energy and being social, which is not really me at all, so I want my game time to be my chill time. By myself. To recharge.

Hmm, the loot mechanics might be what's "disruptive"? Are there any other games that do co-op grinding with rewards sharing, whether those rewards are XP, loot, or other stuff? Guild Wars 2 has kind of a similar system, a lot of rewards are shared (or instanced) rather than being zero-sum. It makes the players a lot friendlier and more cooperative, since there's no downside to sharing a kill. If someone's struggling with an open-world boss, everyone rushes in to help them.

If they follow the Destiny pattern, playing solo is just a degenerate form of co-op. You may be locked out of some experiences that require a full squad, but otherwise, you can go do your own thing. The environments were nifty. The beginning looked a bit like some of the concept art for the Free Marches, there's this concept art spread in the middle of WoT 1 that has a similar style, with the crisscrossing cloth bands over the top. Cool to see it brought to life, even in another franchise. I have to say, my favorite part was the wrinkles on the first NPC's face. I hope we get to see more textured faces in Dragon Age too. (also that flying part sure lends credence to that theory that DA4 could have griffon riding) Oh, Maker, please. I really hope to see some of this ...I don't even know what to call it... this design incorporated into DA4. The dense city hub. Underwater stuff. The flying-ish-y mechanic. More textured faces. That attention to detail this demo exhibited. Even the open world part was nice and dense, and weather changes like that Shaper storm. Now that I know they can do it, they better not hold out.

If its like Destiny, there could be one or two extra difficult "raids" that are impossible without a full party, but the vast majority of the game is possible to solo.

I mean, we still don't know pretty much anything about the game, maybe is not Destiny 2.5, but I just don't like this whole idea...

It is difficult for group games to have any significant focus on story at all unless everyone is on board with it. Sure, maybe I will care about that stuff, but chances are my teammates won't. Think of it in terms of WoW: even if I want to stop and read every quest, the people in my group will just click "accept" and leave. Since I don't want to stay behind, I'll follow them. The only way I could see it work would be by segregating two entirely different sections of the game. The open world wilderness would be pure multiplayer grind, while inside the walls you could hang around by yourself talking to NPCs and such.

I totally spaced out on the dense city, but you're absolutely right! Definitely puts to bed any lingering concerns that Frostbite couldn't handle Minrathous.

I think the reason they thought this game would be revolutionary is that they started working on it in 2012, before Destiny came out. I confess that what I've seen so far strikes me as kind of trite: today it is just another team shooter with RPG elements.

Most of that game is basically single-player, and has interesting stories to boot. They've recently released Morrowind expansion and it has single-handedly reminded me why I love TES universe. I've had so much fun just exploring Vvanderfell and questing I basically spent more than a week in invisible mode, avoiding friends who'd like to run daily dungeons

Watched the trailer again - this time full-screen & 4K. Yeah, I'm a little skeptical now that the game will land with that level of fidelity. There were also elements in the environments that were destructible - trees getting knocked down, the mortar creating an actual crater in the landscape, the storm tossing all kinds of debris around. It'd be fantastic if they could get even close to this in the final game. We'll see!

Minrathous will be a spraaaaaawling city, major quest hub that'll change with main story and will serve as base for us and our party. Most of everything else will be smaller sections available through eluvians.

I've been pretty down on Dylan/Anthem when it looked/looks like Destiny, but I think Hrungr and Heimdall might be right. Why have Bioware make a Destiny killer if you aren't going to put at least some Bioware story magic into it? And it wouldn't take much to crush Destiny -- since it's pretty much devoid of a cohesive narrative. Even a slightly decent narrative would be a (potentially) big competitive advantage. I say "potentially" because I'm unsure how much the larger coop-action gaming market cares about story. I know what most of the hardcore Destiny grinders care about is the loot progression and not being cheated out of their invested hours every time a new update comes out that gives noobs gear that's equally as powerful as what it took you 100 hours to grind out. That's the thing about evergreen grinding games, how do you balance the gear and rewards economy when you have 100+ hour lifers competing with noobs? How do you keep the bar low enough to attract noobs, but don't penalize the pros? Not much, in my experience. It is difficult for group games to have any significant focus on story at all unless everyone is on board with it. Sure, maybe I will care about that stuff, but chances are my teammates won't. Think of it in terms of WoW: even if I want to stop and read every quest, the people in my group will just click "accept" and leave. Since I don't want to stay behind, I'll follow them.The only way I could see it work would be by segregating two entirely different sections of the game. The open world wilderness would be pure multiplayer grind, while inside the walls you could hang around by yourself talking to NPCs and such. One of the things I liked about SWTOR is it didn't have this problem. It had group conversations that didn't end until everyone had gone through them, so even if the person you ended up in a random group skips past all the dialogue, they can't move on without you until you've finished actually listening to it. They could exit the conversation i suppose, but then the quest wouldn't progress and they'd have to start it again.
