I've mentioned these elsewhere, but I'll put it here.
Classless is an all-or-none. Either make everyone classless or no one. It worked in Andromeda for plot reasons, but not every plot can do that.
Divinity (both 1 and 2) do this well. You pick a set or customize your start, but you pick what you want from there.
Dragon Age, even with the lore-altering Trespasser and Descent, is still fairly unyielding, and that's completely okay.
I think a happy medium would be what I'll just call "Dispositions"
MAGE class Disposition: Offense
AOE: +10% DOT: +3 seconds
Disposition: Defense
DR: +5 Barrier: +5 second duration
Disposition: Support
Combat health regen Barrier adds health regen
Just placeholder names, just to illustrate a concept. It would let you tweak your playstyle, but keep the core classes.

Just setup a hybrid class system like on ES4: Oblivion.

Classes are part of creating a character. It says a lot about who your character is when you decide what their skill set is (what they trained themselves to be good at). This is why even in "classless" RPGs I primarily stick with a defined set of skills for my lead character in terms of how I build them.

generally I tend to stick to arch types even when I have a classless RPG my most successful character was a sneak archer in Skyrim who got to (I believe) level 40 until I grew bored with her had her finish all the questlines (at least the ones I could find) buy all the houses, then settle down with a husband and adopt some kids then I became so dreaded with heading to her home she spend the rest of her game on Solstheim trying to avoid her husband and kids I also have a hard time adapting to Andromeda's classless system (may need to take another look once I get around to properly playing it)
So for me personally...I'd rather if Dragon Age didn't go classless I'm terrible at creating character builds as it is, and having no set class would just make it harder for me

Yeah, Oblivion had that class system where each class was a list of skills. You could choose a preexisting class or build your own by choosing a set of skills at the begining of the game and that was your class for the rest of it.
Dragon age could so something in the spirit of that, wherein at the begining of the game you choose 4 or 5 Ability Trees to form your class (or select a premade group including the traditional Mage, Warrior, Rogue) for the game. With the mage trees only being selectable if you have chosen a mage background/origin.
So you wouldn't be able to do everything, there'd still be that replay value, mage lore would be maintained, but you could still mix and match to create something that suits your character or your preferences.
eg. - Weapon and Shield, Primal, Spirit, Subterfuge + a specialsation - Dual wield, Vanguard, Entropy, Creation + spec (Spec chosen later w/ the requirement that you have atleast one tree of its base type, mage/rogue/warrior) etc.
You'd probably want allocating stats back for it, but I want that back if the class system is the same anyways.
