Well, both are "based" on the Roman Republic, so there is that. True, I think that the Kett having Roman sounding names and titles though is more that it is just how people in the west relate to big empires. The Kett could just as easily be Persia and the Anagara Spartans and Athenians. I doubt that Bioware had an intention to make this games narrative :"space Romans in space Gaul", I mean, Caesar was successful in Gaul, the Archon...not so much. Maybe if Vercingetorix had a SAM...we'll never know. I think it's a fair point. As I said in another post, Rome is the definitive empire in western thought. It's no wonder that both Hitler and Napoleon tried to emulate the empire in some ways. And this reflect in fiction as well, just look to Dragon Age! or Skyrim, or Game of Thrones.... It's true that there were many empires in history, and they were similarities between them (and Rome's). But I think the Senate thing is a really strong nod to Rome, if you think other BIG empires before the last 200 years or so how many of them were rulled by a senate? You could say the Athenian empire was democratic, but it can barely called an empire.

I agree, but as far as the Athenians go...tell that to Syracuse. Well, they did fail miserably there. And it was the most daring campaign the greek city tried. Influence in Sicily was beyond what the Athenians could accomplish.
