I had a petit mal seizure while driving and nearly crashed. For the uniniated: a petit mal seizure is an absence seizure, where your brain kind of loops for a short period of time, usually just for seconds. I started having them after Covid in 2020, but I don't have a diagnosis or anything, and they don't usually happen when driving. Until now. So, there was a red light up ahead, I started braking, and then nothing. When I came to, the car in front of me was far too close, and I thought I'd hit it. I'm pretty sure the automatic collision detection engaged the brakes, and I panic braked, and the car stopped just in time. I consider myself warned. 😬😬😬 Hope you stay ok, that sounds scary.

I bought a crt tv on eBay. A Panasonic Pv-df2704. It arrived in a poorly made package: one layer of cardboard and bubble wrap. It also arrived broken, and when plugged in, the "Prog. timer" light continuously blinks, and the screen doesn't turn on no matter how many times I plug it back in. No refunds Yay. 😑

I went to the surgeon to check my wound and the internal net they replaced for the last time. Everything went well. I don't need to go back there. No more nurses at home. It feels good to be free again.

Back in the era of CRTs when they were in full swing (70s,80s, 90s), Hitachi and Panasonic made their own Picture tubes. All other companies (Westinghouse, Phillips, Magnavox, JVC...there is more I know, cant think of them now), they all had their tubes made by Phillips. Back when Plasmas and LCDs became the in thing... I wish Panasonic stuckmaround in the North American Market. They made the BEST Plasma screen, the best LCD (first to use a native 120hz)...and for the short very brief time, they made a stunning.OLED as good or better than what is this year's best model from Sony. #MourningPanasonic 🥹

My computer is ancient and it needs replacement, because it starts failing. It is a noisy and energy inefficient tower model. It is from 2013, so it isn't capable of proper gaming. I use it a lot, though, and I mostly use it to program software. So, I decided to buy a new one, which I can use for software development. The one I ordered is a cheap laptop with 64GB RAM and a 4TB M.2 SSD. I'll keep using my old 27" monitor and keyboard and mouse. To keep using my other hardware I also ordered a docking station. To my surprise the laptop was designed and assembled in Germany, which I hope improves the quality somewhat. It comes with Windows 11 Pro. It arrives on Thursday. Knock on wood. Edit: It seems that it arrives a day earlier.

The laptop works, but default Windows drives me nuts. Luckily I have the Pro version, so I can force most silly options to get a serious accident. And I can use policies for the rest. So far, I am happy.

I have most of my software installed and I have transferred my data. Tomorrow I'll install some utilities and then the latest C++ and migrate my source files to the latest version. That will keep me busy for a couple of days. But more importantly, I have my monitor, keyboard and mouse back, because I won't need the desktop anymore. I should make some room on my desk for the laptop, because it can act fine as a second monitor. I am so used to the noisy desktop that it feels strange that the laptop is relatively silent.

That replacement is exactly what I wanted. And that it makes less noise is nice.

So I had a tremendous, seemingly very long continuous, "story" dream this night, that I so much wanted to remember, but I was too tired to work through it, so went back to sleep and now I have no clue what it was about, except there were trains at the end. I finished reading a novel, one of those action-thrillers that I suspected I don't want in my bookshelf, so acquired on Kindle. And what a Hollywood tropes, cringe feast it was! Reminded me about some early writing attempts I did myself a couple of decades ago. The first one I tore to small pieces and flushed down the toilet. It was a labor, took hours, since the paper pieces had to be small, dispersed and thoroughly soaked, for me to be able to flush down without fear of stoppages. I learned my lesson, and the next I went down to the beach at night and burned in a pit. Easier. So that's how I handled it, out of fear that anyone would ever come to read the embarrassing garbage. But this guy, no he got himself an agent and got it published. Launched his successful writing career it did. He's written some ten books since he has. Makes me think. Now I'm wondering if I should start a HoI4 game as USA? 🤔 I know it will be a monster of work. UK I'm familiar with and it's mostly just taking care of the navy and secure Africa. I know how to do that now. And I suppose I've won two of those UK games now, even if USA got slightly more points in the last.

The version of HoI4 that I have is fairly basic, not too much dlcs. One of the many flaws of the program is that statistics disappear rather quickly. So the data on ships you have sunk and lost are gone after not much more than a year. Maybe it's two years, I don't know. Anyway, I still tried to figure out if my last naval upgrading scheme had been successful. I think it was. It felt like it. You start UK 1936 with 33 O/P/R-class submarines and 9 S-class. 2 S-class are building so adding up to 11 S-class and 33 O/P/R-class. I have 8 S-class and 30 O/P/R-class left, so losses are 6 early subs, only 3 each. That's pretty good. And all of these subs went to war upgraded with lvl III engines and double III torpedo rooms. I also built more modern own-designed subs and have 125 Sharks-class (III hull) and 54 Stingray-class (IV hull). I don't know how many I built so don't know losses. You start with 10 S-class destroyers, 7 left. 34 A/B/C/D-class, 20 left. 66 V/W-class, 55 left. 15 E/F/G/H-class, 9 building, 18 left. So losses are 3+14+11+6 = 34 in total of the old. I have 38, 109, 2, and 69 more modern own-designed destroyers left, but again don't know how many I built so losses are unknown. Left with 33 of 37, the four old classes of light cruisers. Only 4 losses, not bad. But again I don't know how many modern I lost, pretty sure I lost at least 2 though, probably more, 41 left. No heavy cruisers lost. 13 County-class and 3 Hawkins-class at the start. Built 6 Golden Hind-class, 9 Invincible-class and 6 Gorgo-class. No battlecruisers lost. Hood, Renown and Repulse at the start, none built. No battleship lost. 5 Queen Elisabeth-class, 5 Revenge-class, 2-Nelson-class at start. Built 3 Temeraire-class, 5 Agamemnon-class, 2 Britannia-class. No Carriers lost. Hermes, Eagle, 3 Courageous-class at start, plus 1 Ark Royal building. Built 3 Victorious-class, 10 Queen Jane Gray-class, 6 Agincourt-class.
Submarines did very well this time. In addition to that I equipped all of them with lvl III engines and lvl III torpedos which affect their survivability significantly in battle, I also tasked fighters with 'Intercept' over waters where enemy was running naval bombers, since those have taken a toll of my submarines in earlier games. And then you also need to task other fighters with 'Air Superiority' to protect the interceptors.
I built lots of dockyards, think it ended up at 138. This was a more navy-focused gameplay than ever before.

edit: [Major whining about YT deleted]
It's as if YT went through an algorithmic change a couple of months ago. These days I have to actively and creatively search for interesting content.
On other concerns, do I start up yet another UK game in HoI4, or do I dare choose USA this time?

It was time for me to declare my income tax. I rarely do that, because they already know everything. And yes, from 2019 until 2022 I was in the clear. I didn't get back anything, but I also didn't have to pay anything. But I was advised to do the declaration this year. And yes, for 2023 I got a substantial amount back. That had to do with me becoming officially retired. It's about a month income worth. Nice. And it was super simple to do the declaration on their site.
