I'm sorry you had to deal with fallout of others' actions. It sounds similar to what happened to my mother when her sister in law spread gossip about her in the workplace. She never knew until a coworker took her aside and told her the truth because mom was nothing like the nasty image the coworker had been told. Rumors are never good sources to trust without finding out for yourself. Do you know why they did it? Were they jealous or upset or misunderstood something about you? Thank you. It means a lot to have someone's support. It started as one neighbour, a woman who raised her son by herself, being jealous of my parents when I was still a young child. I figure she's insecure, because she's always talking about her son to people, telling them how well he's doing in life, even though no one asked. Then, after I gained a lot of weight and started exercising, I really grew and became tall for a girl of my age. I must've been 8 yrs old. That's when kids at school stopped talking to me and started ignoring me everyday. This went on for many years and I didn't know what was the cause. I blamed myself and thought I had some inherent problem. Was I too ugly? Too quiet? I didn't know. I usually treated people well and was friendly. So I was really unhappy and feeling lost. And because I felt ashamed to talk about that problem to my parents, I was always second-guessing, right until I made it to college. Before that, when I was 12, my mother started having severe disagreements with my father and finally asked for a divorce. She had already been a distant mother ever since the disagreements started. So when she was gone, this didn't change. I was feeling very lonely and my father was an agressive man. I'm 30 yrs old now and, talking to a neighbour, I accidentally discovered it was this woman who was creating a negative image of me and my dad to other people ever since I was in school. Those people in turn spread this negative image to other people and thus was a negative reputation forged behind my back. I can't blame this woman alone, because it was all those people that chose to believe in her, without getting to know who I was. And they did that because they didn't like my father. They wanted to get to him through me, you see? You attack that which the person loves the most. And what hurts me the most is that my mother also turned against him and had become distant and abusive - always putting me down, making me feel psychologically ill - because she wanted to hurt my father as well. There were a lot more serious problems in my life than what I described here, but it would take a while to explain everything. I just wanted to write a bit about it and lighten the feeling of weight. I carried a lot of guilt not knowing all along that nothing was my fault. It was bad, irresponsible people wishing the worst to my family. I'm going to confront my mother about these things, about what she did, her rolein this pretty soon. It's something I have to do, because she's abusive to this day. Thanks again for reading and I'm really glad that your mum could avoid the damaging effect of gossip before things grew out of hand.

Damn, DragonEffect, that's incredibly cruel what happened. I wished I had something more comforting to say than allegories about similar situations. That'd be really depressing quickly.
I can say there's a phrase I heard that you can love nearly anyone the more you get to know about them. In a way, it is true; the more experiences shared, the more likely someone else will relate and sympathize. Perhaps finding out more and letting others know more about you like here on this forum can help protect you from having a repeat of that.
And food. Really good food. It's a quick way to be likable to people. Trust me, several years later and a guy from high school still remembered me fondly because I fed him mom's homemade granola.

I'm working on doing exactly what you've just mentioned. I'll start undoing the damage by mustering up the courage to talk to people I trust at work about this. I've been hired this August and I hope I can let them know the truth before some ill-intended gossiper finds out where I'm working and tries to spread their venom. Someone always knows someone else who knows about your past and tries to ruin things for you. So I need to watch my back.

I'm glad at least I found BSN and the awesome people in it or else I would go insane. +32353473575 And just so we're clear, that quoted bit is why I liked your post. Not the other unfortunate stuff.

I spent the longest time hearing that as "pig iron on his hip". In my defense, I knew it was a gun -- I just figured it was referring to shotgun that was used for killing pigs and it was a colorful expression. In my defense, farm kid.

Random fact: I totally envy those people who fall asleep in a matter of 5 minuets and can sleep under the roughest conditions like a baby. I wish I possessed this mythical ability.
I know several of those people, they instantly fall asleep in airplanes, sleep like little sheep inside the most horrible camping locations, they can sleep super easy before a difficult and rough day, they can fall asleep next to a jackhammer. They must have some kind of special inner peace or maybe a special form of utter obliviousness. All those conditions I just mentioned make me desperately roll around in my bed for hours till I fall in an uneasy, rough sleep. Its fucking unfair.
Those people are a miracle to me.

Story of my life. My brain translates ''I have to wake up early in the morning because I have to be fit for an important business meeting'' into ''Oh no, oh no something important is happening tomorrow, I must not initiate sleep until I have played through every single way of how I could utterly fail at the meeting. And body, shut up, I don't care about your problems! ''. That's because you don't lift enough! The only thing I'm not lifting enough of is girl booty.

It takes me forever to fall asleep, too. I also don't feel refreshed when I wake up either, even after 8-9 hours of sleep. Waking up always sucks.

Same here, I easily fall asleep when I'm travelling, be it planes, buses, cars whatever. In fact it is often a struggle to stay up especially if I'm bored and have nothing to occupy myself. Even fallen asleep amidst a concert once although to be fair I was kinda sleep deprived then. Also I can easily sleep 9 plus hours too. Another sleep related fact is that I like listening to random background sounds when I'm going to sleep, like passing cars, rain and thunder etc which I find to be relaxing.

I can't sleep very well either. It can take me hours to fall asleep. Listening to music however will help me fall sleep. I think my ears and mind eventually shut it out and so I fall asleep shortly after. When I was in high school I could not sleep at night. My brain just would not turn off. I ended up seeing a doctor and they gave me a prescription for Valium. It did not help one bit.

We can hate them together. I have never possessed this ability either. In normal situation I fall asleep after 30-45min. And by normal I mean at home, no stress and I have slept well previously. When I'm stressed I practically stop sleeping and the less I sleep the harder it is to fall asleep. Vicious circle.

I can sleep fairly easily if I'm relaxed enough, doesn't matter where I am. The trouble is that I'm too much of a heavy sleeper. I once slept through an earthquake.

In my case, it's not a choice. In order to even be functional in classes, naps were mandatory and that's never comfortable doing it in public on a couch no matter how often you see college students do it. Don't ever trade for idiopathic hypersomnia. You'll sleep whether you want to or not even while driving if you tire out and it can happen easily. Melatonin capsules, muscle relaxers, and Benandryl can be used to help you along if you're home. Meditation is another. I've had nights where the mind is racing and I have to tell it, "Shhh, these concerns are important but we'll deal with them in the morning. For tonight, let it be fine, let it rest. It will be better to deal with it rested." And keeping a vibrate alarm on your phone and under or near your head will ensure you wake up on time.

I live in a place with 4 other people who all have different schedules so sometimes sleep is an issue... we only have one washroom too, so that's another issue, not to mention washer/dryer access...yeah, it's crowded over here sometimes.... LOL

I can sleep fairly easily if I'm relaxed enough, doesn't matter where I am. The trouble is that I'm too much of a heavy sleeper. I once slept through an earthquake. I'm a little jealous actually. I once slept through a ceiling fan coming out of the ceiling, and crashing to the ground. All this on the floor below me. Same thing with thunderstorms, loud honks of cars, ect. But my alarms always wake me up. No matter if they are from my cell phone, or alarm clock. But actually getting to sleep can be a pain for me. I buy over the counter sleep aids, and take one every once in a while. They are basically anti histamines, but they work.
