Roleplay, but I have an archetype for my first (and usually my favorite) playthrough that seems to carry across games.
I'm always going to start out as a by-the-books (whatever the hell the regional book is in the game, regardless of how it matches my morals), female knight in sour armor. Double bonus points if I can play her middle-aged and grizzled, and triple points if she can immediately become a gritty detective. Basically I always try to start off as gender-bending Johnny Dollar. Annnnd then I make her a short range brawler who solves as much as possible with her fists and/or shield.
Later on, I'll play with personality a bit.

I create characters in my head, with reasons on why they are doing whatever it is they are doing at the moment. Playing as myself is impossible, because video games nudge you to do things that a typical person would not care or want to do, and because of this, immersion is broken once you are forced to do or say something you know you would not do or say. These types of games are better played as a predefined character, or character you created in your head, maybe with some influence from self.

The framing of the question is a bit off for me. In my case, I do neither. About roleplaying: Ideally, I roleplay as someone who is to some extent predetermined by the game, eg. Hawke or Shepard. In this case, I won't have to create everything from scratch. For example, in the case of Hawke and Shepard, the game makes it easy for me to roleplay a Paragon/Renegade or a Diplomatic/Sarcastic/Aggressive Hawke. It's like they provide us with distinct "paths" regarding the kind of characters we can play. Having clear-cut paths makes sure that the protagonists, despite their occasionally different personalities, are seamlessly integrated into the story. I like it that the "big picture" of the protagonist is largely predetermined, and I can just concentrate on the details of their personality, like how they resolve problems and which people they like/love. I struggle with blank slate protagonists, because good writing is what I appreciate in BW games (and videogames in general) and this competitive advantage should be also extended to their protagonists. If I am inspired to create my own characters, I would much rather write a novel or a short story. When it comes to videogames, I prefer them to be classy replacements for the bad fantasy novels I used to read in my teenage years. About self-inserting: Of course, it's easier for me to make moral choices which correspond with my own values, and that's how I usually play the first PT, but I've derived a great deal of enjoyment playing as someone totally different from me. Like a dickhead Warden, who cared about nothing and slept with everyone And my most memorable BW run was with an aggressive blood mage Hawke, who was a polar opposite of me. I would never be able to rival Merrill, but my aggressive Hawke did

Roleplay. I have to live with myself 24/7, I have no desire 'play' myself too. :gasp: Oh the horror. On a more serious note. Roleplay games, for me, are about escaping reality and exploring new things via my imagination, and the Worlds that the Dev's create. Plus, many of my characters are Male: Example Hawke and Shepard. So it's a little difficult to self-insert in those cases.

I don't know about self-insertion, but I do role-play.
When I create characters in any RPG, I look for traits and skills that I know I can do. For example, I tend to gravitate towards skills that encompass medicine, engineering or computer skills. Now I know I'm not at the same level as an Army engineer in the Corps, but it's feasible for me because I served alongside them as a Medic. My computer skills are pretty archaic, but I know enough to be "dangerous." I can always choose the soldier class, because that I do know. I tend to stay away from the extraordinary classes like Biotics or Jedis just because I can't really identify with someone having those powers. However, I love Singularity and Force Choke... a lot. I just won't use it for my own character. I also tend to play straight males all the time. Yeah, I know... Boring. Well, that's where I feel most comfortable. I'm also Roman Catholic, so I tend to gravitate towards religious entities like the Chantry. I also tend to fight like I was taught in the Army. "Move, shoot and communicate... get them before they get you." I don't fight like Rambo. I fight like a soldier who was taught to use cover, use suppressing fire and to engage the enemy at a distance. As a medic, I tend to play the support guy. I love it. I want to help keep the lines up and running. Yes, I know I will never get top DPS, top tanking and sometimes not even top-healer in MMOs, but I tend to play characters like Paladins and that works for me. My moral compass is played out for my canon runs as Paragon or Light side. For fun, Renegade or Dark Side and let my frustrations loose on digital adversaries. When I romance a character, I look at it how I would approach it in real life. Ashley, Miranda, Cora, Morrigan, Leliana, Isabella, Avelline, Cassandra, Vivienne and Josephine are all perfect candidates for my personal tastes. To be honest, I love Morrigan. Her character was exceptionally written and voiced. She is the only character that I made adjustments for to keep her in the party (remember when that was a thing?). Anyway, I explore the game as if I was there in the canvas that BioWare provided. I can be the good guy that wants to help the greater good without having to be Superman.

At first I would have said I self-insert, however after reading what other people have said I guess for me it is role-playing. I could never be that confident and self-assertive myself talking to all those people would definitely be hard for me let alone being the centre of attention.
I do however play characters to my ethics, so I can never do the evil things like harden Leliana.
