So I played Mass Effect 1 and 2 and the KOTORs. And I liked them. But then I ran out! Oh no! (I mean, I replayed 'em, but still.) At some point, I was hanging out at Gamestop, burning time waiting for my husband to get off work so we could drive home. And the Gamestop minion was like "Want a game?" And I was like "Eh, sure." And rattled off my gaming pedigree (MMOs and the space RPGS). And he pulled Dragon Age 2 out of the bargain bin and said, "Hey, you might like this." And then I fell in love.Dragon Age 2 remains my favorite, which is probably all the evidence anyone needs to declare me terrible. (Of particular note: Me calling my friend who played Dragon Age: Origins up long distance. I asked if there were werewolves in the setting, because I needed to know if this elf was just crazy as balls or if that was something I should take seriously.)...spoiler alert? DA2 is my favorite of the series as well. There are plenty of us terrible people around here Count me among the terrible people

It happens only after: Following the Qun. Hawke must go to the chantry alone for this to trigger. Make sure you've either taken care of the nighttime mobs in the area, OR do not move away from the chantry door until the monologue is finished. Otherwise, Hawke will be attacked, which interrupts the monologue.

It's important to note that both Skyrim and The Witcher have action combat, which Dragon Age doesn’t (it kind of does in DAI, I suppose).
I loved DAO because I've been playing BioWare's RPGs since 1999 and DAO was very much built in that mould.
It's a stat-driven adventure where the player gets near total control of the protagonist's personality. It's a proper roleplaying game.
The rest of the series mostly serves to show that BioWare and I differ with regard to what the core features of their RPGs are. They seem to think they're known for crafting a tightly woven narrative, something I think of as a fairly recent addition to their RPGs.
I think they offered roleplaying freedom, but DA2 (and the entire ME series) makes almost no effort to do this.

I think I just died ...and the Chantry owes me an apology, because my apartment looks nothing like the Maker's bosom Thank you. For sharing this. And thanks also for the advice on how to trigger this Catilina dragontartare I would have never found this alone. I mean... I have no words. So I'll remain silent. I think I'm gonna replay DA2 soon. So definitely count me in on the bad guys who swoon in front of DA2. PS. Enchantment soup It's like Hawke is finally letting her resentment out, after all those frustrating years.

I can warmly recommend the Dragon Age series: it has great characters, good stories and it has an interesting setting. .
I recommend starting from the beginning with Dragon Age: Origins though I don't think you'd be totally lost if you made your entry point one of the later installments. I say start with whichever you like and see whether the writing grabs you and the setting holds your interest.
One thing to bear in mind that may have been mentioned by others in the thread is that the combat do tend to differ from installment to installment.

I used to be a massive fan of Mass Effect but I never really gave Dragon Age a chance. Is it any good? I do enjoy games like Skyrim and The Witcher. Yes. But keep in mind that playstyle is quite different across the three games.

Well, well, what have we here? A Mass Effect fan? Are you a gaming vulture, I wonder? A bored videogame scavenger poking amidst a Bioware corpse whose bones have been long since cleaned? Or merely an intruder, come into these die-hard DA fan filled boards of ours in search of… easy prey great games? What say you, hmm? Scavenger or intruder?
And here I will take a wild guess, but since you are a ME fan, I predict you will enjoy DA2 the most. That game is my guilty pleasure as well. Recently I looked back on some old posts of mine in old forums where I was active when the game came out. I defended it alot even though I was the first to point some of it's many shortcomings. I can say now that my opinion is the same today - great game that could have been the crown jewel in Bioware's crown for years to come. If they made it in less than 18 months, imagine what they could have done with a year more...

Before I became addicted to MET, I was addicted to DA. MET holds together better as a continuous trilogy. Dragon Age has three games, but they are more like three "individuals." Each is great in its own right and you will have spirited arguments between people about which one is best. (IMHO Origins is the best; to all you DA2 fanatics...Pffffffft!!! ) MET does a good job of maintaining a consistent "look" - perhaps because they were made over a shorter span of time. There's a more dramatic change in the look of the DA universe over the three games. (As a history major, I would describe Dragon Age Origins as looking Medieval, while DA2 looks like the Renaissance, and Inquisition looks like 18th century or Enlightenment Europe. Given that the game covers a 10 year span, a bit too dramatic.) In MET, you are always Shepard. Each DA game has a different player protagonist and there's less continuity among the companions. As an added bonus, there are an insane number of mods for Dragon Age Origins, many of which really improve the game.

I am constantly torn between being extremely grateful that they made DA2 and being extremely bitter that they were given so little time to make it. Not to mention that they cancelled the expansion.
Even the way DA2 is now, it's still hands-down the crown jewel of BW, but it could have been SO MUCH BETTER. If DA2 had more polish, it would be very hard to imagine how any game could ever best it, at least in my lifetime. Damn EA or whoever it was behind the time limit of 18 months.
And sorry about offtopic rant I'll return to being grateful as soon as I watch that Hawke monologue again...

The same can be said for ME3. Oh well... Episode 3 of DA2 is a mess, but the game definitely has heart and that's what gives it replayability! And is that Hawke monologue really in the game? How could I have missed it? (Better yet, what do you have to do to get it to generate? Have Hawke go exploring without his/her team?)

In a word, yes, Dragon Age is my favorite game series. Mass Effect held that title for a little while but I've come to love the lore, characters and world of Dragon Age much more. If you like Bioware's character creation, squadmates, story, and world building in Mass Effect, I would encourage you to try Dragon Age.
Some things to keep in mind though:
1. Dragon Age is not one continuous saga - There are connecting threads, but each game features a new protagonist with a new story, though you can still import choices so it is the same continuous world. This is actually one of my favorite features. I love creating and building up characters, made more fun by the thought that they now cohabit the same world. The stories themselves vary in scope as well. Origins and Inquisition both have world ending stakes while Dragon Age 2 is much more down to earth and personal, centered around a single city with a less focused story spanning ten years.
2. Gameplay changes dramatically between installments - The gameplay system in Origins was much slower paced and methodical than its successors. Dragon Age 2 had a similar combat system but it was much faster and the game was criticized for reusing environments and lack of variety (a symptom of a rushed development period of only 18 months). Inquisition is the first entry to feature open world areas designed to be explored (Advice: don't try to do everything in the Hinterlands in one shot) and also featured a more action oriented combat system that removed the ability wheel.
EDIT: Also, it's worth mentioning that DAO and DA2 have not aged overly well visually, they didn't look great for the time either, but they are still quite playable and worth experiencing.

The gameplay system in Origins was much slower paced and methodical than its successors. Read: better DAO is the only Dragon Age game where I find the combat fun. DAI's can be interesting, but mostly it's just a necessary obstacle. DA2's combat was terribly dull for me.

To say ME is better than DA is compeltely subjective. I personally find DA miles better than ME. Better characters, better story and the gameplay is way less clunky. Plus, you can decide which race to play - maybe standard selection, but still more than ME has (apart from the second game, where you play a human). But this is subjective too, so the only way to find out, if it is the right game franchise to play is to play it. I fell in love with it, when I played it the first time and all three games are permanent installed on my computer (an honor that they share only with Baldurs Gate). There is a lot to like, some things could have done better, like in any other game out there, I guess, but it has a big replaying value. In respect to satisfying playing different races, MET is more to my liking b/c it lets you play far more than three/four in DAT in the MP module, and they are different than the elves-dwarves. Andromeda is behind in this respect, but hopefully they will catch up at least partially. SWTOR blows both out of the water and then out of the air b/c it has 11 species in both SP and MP content. But then, SWTOR also is all about recoloured humans, while the MET is a bit more off the beaten track...
