The combat isn't that amazing but everything else is like The Witcher so I like it. One thing I have to say though...the character customization is trash. Also, if girls don't turn out pretty enough for you, all three DA games have a lot of mods on Nexus to give them long hair and heavy mascara and boobs.

I think the character customization is decent in DAO and DAI, particularly if you want an older character (something most games do terribly).

I find Mass Effect to be superior to Dragon Age, but they are very different games. ME has mostly consistent combat, squaddies you can keep through all three games, and Shepard. Dragon Age is three individual games tied loosely together. But I do like Dragon Age a lot. Dragon Age Origins is the best game of the three, Dragon Age 2 the most replayable and fun, and Dragon Age Inquisition is like...it's a good game but it's like the mass-produced, consumer friendly one of the trio. The writing is solid and you will never find yourself holding the Idiot Ball quite as hard as Shepard did. Dragon Age also doesn't railroad you nearly as hard as Mass Effect does until DAI, and even then it's not as bad as ME3.
It has its downsides: DAO didn't look good even when it came out and the combat is slow, DA2 is very limited, DAI is an open world game made by a company that doesn't quite understand open world games yet. Unlike others, I don't think it and ME are very comparable except that they are made by the same company and are ostensibly RPGs. It's not Mass Effect in the Middle Ages! but it has its own charms and an interesting story that's been steadily building for three games. If you liked ME for the squadmates, DA has very well-written companions across the board. If you liked it for the universe, DA is great at world-building. If you liked it for Shepard, you're out of luck, though I love my Warden more than I've loved any Shepard, ever. If you liked it for the combat, well...I've never thought ME had great combat, so I think you'll be fine there, too.

I can't say I'm a huge gamer, but after experiencing the Dragon Age Trilogy and Mass Effect 2/3, the expectations I have from video games are pretty high. That I'm a big fan of Dragon Age seems like it comes up in any conversation if someone wants to get to know me in a quality fashion. I've picked up writing again because of Dragon Age, a hobby I'd dumped over a decade ago. I've decided to learn to draw because of Dragon Age. A hobby I'd never even been interested in. Loving Dragon Age has changed my life. Interacting with the fans of Dragon Age fills many hours. And yes, I still do have a life, I'm married with dogs and travel. Each game of the Trilogy has a focus/theme, a new protaganist and a new group of people to love. Each installment has it's flaws, but at least it's a new one each game right? But you won't regret playing them.

Is there a way to respec? I chose the rogue class but I feel useless in team fights and I'm usually the first to die.

The DW rogue needs help from the mage to barrier him, and make sure your warrior taunts off of you. It grows progressively more powerful as the game goes on, obviously. I would also install the mod that allows you to bypass requirements on the Wartable reputation unlocks, and unlock 12 health potions asap. Also, would not hurt spending some of the dumb elfroot on regen potions & jars of bees. DW rogue is the best in DA2, imo.

If you are on pc, there are some mods on Nexus, that allow you to respec. The rogue becomes pretty powerful later on though. In DA2 and DAI there are potions, that let you respec (but not change the core class, that is only possible with the mods mentioned before), in DA2 you find them in the black Emporium (it's called Maker's Sigh), in DAI in the shop of the smith, I guess, but I don't recall the name (and it wasn't a potion, but an amulett there)

Combat in Origins being bad is common to a lot of people, I personally see it as the best cause it's not the hack and slash that DAII and DA:I are.

I found DA2 combat very fun, especially due it's "hack and slash" nature, because the whole game is comic-book-kind: seems Hawke is Varric's hero: probably a bit bigger, stronger etc, than really... this hack-and-lash style just fit Hawke.

Don't be intimidated by the combat in Origins. There's excellent mods to help with that, I needed them at first not to die all the time.
Once you get used to it, it's not a problem and the story is fantastic. Modding, yet again added more characters and areas to the game, if you're interested, otherwise great as it is. DA2 is a great bridge title. The play/ levels are okay, but the characters are what carry it imho. And Inquisition is so fun and huge for exploration, also with great characters that I'm spoiled now for RPG's. Hope you try it!

I don't necessarily dislike hack and slash, but I do find it unnecessary to be pressing buttons 500 times in a 2 minute combat scenario, where's out the controllers faster and can even tire some people's hands out.

My only real problem with Mass Effect, and now with Inquisition, is the "the player is the only target" mentality during combat. I'm slightly more forgiving with Inquisition since they needed a way to stop you from standing there and messing with the rifts. So every wraith automatically hits you, every terror demon knocks you over, every despair demon hits you with its freeze ray. The only enemy that doesn't target you are the dragons, who go after the mage ally instead.
However in Mass Effect it is horribly, wretchedly, abysmally bad. It's dumb to watch this huge Fiend beast pass right through your squad and the Nomad because it literally can't go after anybody else but you. A shame since the rest of the combat has been improving game after game.
If you're playing as a daggers rogue stealth is the way to go. Once you specialize things will get a lot better. Switch to Solas or Varric and slaughter every animal you come across. You'll need the materials.

Is there a way to respec? I chose the rogue class but I feel useless in team fights and I'm usually the first to die. This advice helped me on my rogue playthrough. Especially important, I think, is, "Give Cass War Cry, set to Preferred." This will give the party guard on hit, which will help your squishy rogue stay alive. Respec Cassandra if necessary to give her this ability. Later on in the game, you can craft armor that generates guard on hit, and thus free up an ability slot for Cassandra or free you to not take Cassandra along if you don't want to.

hmmm something is up with the fps now. Before I was playing it on 60fps which was nice but now with vsync on, it drops down to 24. When I turn it off it goes from anywhere to 60-100+.

So every wraith automatically hits you, every terror demon knocks you over, every despair demon hits you with its freeze ray. The only enemy that doesn't target you are the dragons, who go after the mage ally instead. In DAI, this is due to the fact that enemies will usually target the first party member in range, or the first party member to damage them. Since the Inquisitor is typically at the front, they seem to focus on you primarily. Switch to another party member just before combat, preferably a tank, and you'll see what I mean.

No I'm fine with that. I fully expect the enemies to focus on me if I take the first shot. That's realistic. What I was referring to is the cheap shotting tactics after the first attack. Like the little baby rachni who scurry past your two team mates just so they can blow up on you. They never blow up on your allies, only you. That's ME but DA uses similar methods.
