Break’s over, and I’m back with a double feature of Platinum Solos, this time with the Asari Duelist and Salarian Operator! Asari DuelistThe Duelist is another Ultra Rare character that you don’t see often in Platinum PUG lobbies. Back when Andromeda was more popular, there were several Platinum tier lists in which the Duelist was placed near or at the bottom. Well, I’d like to think that the Duelist not only is viable on Platinum, but can actually excel. She’s well suited for hit-and-run tactics, weakening crowds with Tech Combos, protecting herself and the team with Backlash, getting quickly to objectives with Charge and Biotic Blink, and taking out single non-boss targets. Objectives: Triple Retrieval Gameplay Notes and Build link: goo.gl/QCbe9k- Backlash: 4A 5B
- Charge: 4B 5A 6B
- Lance: 3 points
- Offensive Biotics: 4A 5A 6B
- Barrier: 4A 5B 6B
- Rozerad Siphon V
- Rozerad Concussive I
- Multicapacitor
- Pistol Rail Amp III
- Disruptor Ammo III
PowersWith my Batarian Vanguard solo, I used Charge only as a last resort to get back some shields or to escape a tricky situation. The Asari Duelist, on the other hand, can employ Charge more frequently since she has Backlash and Biotic Blink to tank enemy fire or escape. I used the latter liberally throughout the match to quickly navigate through the map and prevent the enemies from getting a read on me. I think she and the Human Guardian are the characters best suited for soloing Platinum aside from the stealth characters because of their teleport dash. Just remember, a jump dash will stop at obstacles. Evading while on the ground will cause you to blink through objects. Both options for Rank 6 Backlash are not worth it, so I invested the points into Lance. It was my primary means over Charge to create Tech Combos from primed enemies. Saving Barrier gives her a get out of jail free card when her health is low. And her melee offers immunity frames, something her melee’ing colleagues — the Krogan Gladiator and Batarian Vanguard — don’t have. Just be sure not to melee an enemy when an Ascendant is nearby. The time it takes to perform the melee animation is longer than the Ascendant’s sync-kill bubble animation. You will get picked up! Biotic blink also has a slightly longer animation than other characters evade. In previous attempts, I got hugged by the Ascendant several times while taking too long to blink off the roof. Weapons and LoadoutOn my initial attempts, I went with the Rozerad Siphon and Piranha Siphon (Smart Choke and Heavy Melee mods). The Piranha is great for chewing through armored targets like Berserkers and Behemoths, especially when I equipped Incendiary ammo. On paper, the Rozerad deals a lot of damage to armor, but it takes a long time to pump out 141 bullets compared to the 12 rounds in the Piranha. On the other hand, the Piranha takes longer to prime enemies than the Rozerad. As the failures mounted, I began changing my weapon loadout. I still kept the Rozerad Siphon, but I experimented with the Inferno and Equalizer Concussive variants. I wanted some extra oomph when I took down enemies and an extra 800-1500 damage across a radius of 7.5m sounded good. Ultimately, I went with dual Rozerad pistols. I just got the Concussive variant and wanted to see if I could accurately target those weak points. On console, I think the key is not to hold down the firing button when performing the finishing shot. The Rozerad’s bloom, while not much, is significant enough to miss hitting weak points. Instead, pretend the Rozerad Concussive is a Phalanx and spam that fire button when the enemy has very little health yet. Single shot accuracy is much improved and you will have a better chance at creating that Biotic explosion. I‘ll be practicing this technique in future matches. Finally, disruptor ammo was a great addition. Originally I went with shotgun and melee boosters but that only allowed me to handle single targets. Next, I equipped incendiary ammo; while it handled armor, it didn’t provide as much crowd-control as I desired. Disruptor ammo, on the other hand, stunned enemies I shot at, and tech combos left a residual electrical field which shocked anything walking through. ObjectivesOf all the enemies, I was downed most of all by the RNG objectives on Wave 6. Prior to this successful mission with three Retrieval objectives, I got a Hack or Upload seven straight times! It’s almost enough to make you want to quit and give up, but the Duelist and I were not to be denied!

Salarian OperatorThe Salarian Operator is one of my favorite characters to play in Mass Effect Andromeda. I run him a lot on Platinum to assist my team, debuffing enemies with Invasion and Overload (via Tech Sabotage) and boosting everyone’s shields. Since I started doing solo runs, however, I couldn’t get past Wave 5 with him. My strategy and skills have improved since then; the day after my Duelist run, I brought out the Operator and tried again with a successful extraction. Objectives: Devices, Retrieval, and Retrieval Gameplay notes and build link: goo.gl/KH6vtR- Invasion: 4B 5B 6B
- Shield Boost: 4B 5A 6B
- Overload: 4B
- Offensive Tech: 4A
- Support Systems: 4A 5A 6B
- Rozerad Siphon V
- Kishock Harpoon Gun Siphon III
- Expert Package
- Incendiary Ammo IV
- Targeting VI III
PowersI didn’t change my Operator build for this Platinum Solo. He has great survivability with Shield Boost. Specced for extended duration through Shield Boost 6B and Offensive Tech 4A and Support Systems 5A, his shields recharge for 11.3 seconds with a 9.1 second recharge time. An argument could be made to have gone for Overcharge to better handle burst fire from enemies, but that would have reduced the Shield Boost duration to just 4.5 seconds. The ongoing shield restoration allowed me to be inside the Behemoth’s red energy drain bubble without worrying about dropping my shields. You can further increase his ability to stay alive by reducing enemy weapon output via Invasion 6B Sabotage (-15% for duration of infection) and Overload with Support Systems 6B Sabotage (30% for 8 seconds) respectively. Most people skip out of Tech Sabotage and choose Invasion 6A Virulence instead. That’s certainly a valid choice, but it didn’t have any affect on the outcome of this mission. Overload was used primarily for stunning and detonating fire-primed enemies. I did not always have time to charge it for two seconds, so I frequently just stunned whatever was in front of me. Incendiary ammo and fire explosions made quick work of armored targets like Saboteurs, Berserkers, and the Behemoth. Running around as much as I did, I probably could have cast Invasion a bit more. It probably wore off by the time that I did a circuit around the map. When it was active, however, I could definitely see a boost in my damage output. Finally, it never hurts to have top-tier weapons like the Rozerad Siphon and Kishock Siphon. ObjectivesThat’s two in a row for great RNG-objectives. Devices, Retrieval, and Retrieval. If only I could get these every time I attempt a solo! The only difficult moment was the third device. A Saboteur was just standing right at the device when I entered Building 8! Please enjoy! Next up, I think I will tackle the Human Kineticist. We’ll see how long I can stay in Ascension mode with everything firing at me!

You're a beast! I'm only just starting to get comfortable PUGging Gold (It's not that I can't handle Gold, but carrying 2x 500 Apex Rating leeches really taxes my patience/abilities), and here you are, ready to try soloing Platinum with the Kineticist (A character I admittedly have little respect for), assuming you'll be using Disruptor Ammo for her?
Personally, I'm a huge fan of Disruptor Ammo and Tech Bursts in this game, I was already happy with them in ME3 where their HUGE AoE and Stagger really helped a CQC character survive on Platinum, but it's even better here. As you mentioned, that lingering field is a lifesaver.

Either Disruptor or Incendiary Ammo. Since I can neutralize Destined, Anointed, Wraiths, and (to a lesser extent) Observers with Pull and Throw, I might go with Incendiary to give a boost to my armor damage. We shall see how it goes when I start my attempts. And I will pray to the RNG gods to give me easy objectives!

However, generally speaking, I think Disruptor would suit her better (Tech Burst the shields away so you can Prime with Pull/Throw). Definitely a difficult decision. In a team, Disruptor would be the clear winner, imho. However, in a solo, it's really hard to decide which is better for her, she really does lack... tools for shields/armour. She needed Warp instead of Lance, then she would've been great.

I only did a handful of Gold or Platinum solos on ME3 back in the day. I remember my Platinum solo took almost two hours and was so stressful!

As you mentioned, that lingering field is a lifesaver. I see over on the ME3 Multiplayer forum that you’re running Gold solos. How would you compare soloing on ME3 versus MEA? I only did a handful of Gold or Platinum solos on ME3 back in the day. I remember my Platinum solo took almost two hours and was so stressful! Honestly? I like ME3 a lot more, particularly when soloing. However,t hat could just be because of my experience (almost 2k hours across a few accounts on PS3 and almost 200hrs on PC). Never soloed Plat myself, and only soloed Gold with a handful of character, but I did do a lot of Juggernaut solos back in the day just for a break from PUGs (I swear, PS3 PUGs are the worst scum in online gaming). It could just be that I only have 300hrs between SP and MP on Andromeda, but I find the enemies a lot more controllable in ME3, and I prefer ME3's cooldown system and combos. I also find MEAMP has a lot more annoying enemy units(Adhi and Breachers and Berserkers), and just downright overpowered ones (read: Blaze Hydras). in ME3, the bosses just applied pressure, but weren't particularly dangerous, it was the mid-tiered enemies like Marauders and Pyros that lay on the hurt. In MEAMP, the bosses are massive bullet sponges AND dish out pain. I also do not like the change in objectives (such as hacks being stalled by enemies). This doesn't mean that I hate MEAMP, I just have a lot of issues with the mechanics (people complain about sticking to cover in ME3, but I stick to cover in MEAMP more, and can't really get ledge grabbing to work reliably), but the shorter length matches do have an appeal, carrying a match in ME3 meant rounding the enemies up once everybody died so you could control the rest of the wave and slugging it out for >30mins, in MEAMP, that means <20mins, then finding a new lobby. One simple change that would increase my enjoyment of MEAMP would be Apex presets being excluded from quick searching, as when combined with the ME*MP's Search tradition of finding a lobby, and refusing to find anything else, it means you can end up in an endless cycle of replaying some shitty Hyper Shields mission or something over and over again, which gets old very quick. After 3 days of shotgun apex missions, including repeating one of them 6 times, I was so tired of Shotguns I've only played the Artificer since (which, btw, works great, never would've tried the snap freeze thing if not for you). On the plus side, there are a few interesting characters. Artificer, Commando, HSent, Juggernaut, and Exemplar are among my favourites, and I have a lot of fun playing them. And maybe with a better manifest state I'll like the guns more, but for now, I basically just use Scattershot or Shorty with a sidearm, or Silhesh+Rozerade. Just unlocked Katana Concussive and Siphon, so might have to give those a try (those are my first variants beyond "S" weapons, which actually aren't that bad, but the rare pool is so huge, they'd be better off as uncommons). Despite all this, I do still play MEAMP everyday, even beyond the daily challenges and apex missions (assuming the search system co-operates), which I think says enough in itself, despite it's flaws, I still play it. Much like ME3MP players, despite its flaws, it's still played. EDIT: Specifically refering to solos, the enemy control definitely applies, though I feel that in solos, that's more of an experience thing. I don't really try to solo in MEAMP, I find it quite frustrating with all the harassment units, I can solo Silver, but it's not easy for me. Whilst I have soloed Silver on ME3 with every character, and on every map, and Gold with a handful of characters, but only a few specific maps (mostly White).

I thought soloing in ME3MP, at least on Xbox, was a chore and super stressful whenever the Banshee, Phantom, or Dragoons came rushing at me. Even though there were only 8 enemies on the map at any given time, as opposed to what 11 or 12 in MEA, it felt like they were everywhere! I wonder if I were to solo Gold or Platinum today having cut my teeth on Andromeda, if I would think it's easy. Having a Cyclonic Mod IV and Phasic Rounds with my Javelin X certainly wouldn't hurt either!
Adhis are the primary reason why I don't try to solo against Outlaws or Remnant. Wraiths jump into you, but at least they don't grab like Adhis. I like the mobility in Andromeda over ME3. Character diversity was better in ME3, however, and they had much more personality.

I'd like to think it was a better choice over Disruptor Ammo. I certainly missed the stunning effect on enemies. Those Observers take a long time to get rid of, esp. when they keep on shooting you while you're whittling away at their shields and health.
