Just formed a new group a few weeks ago with some old friends from tech college. The guy who wanted to GM isn't very old, and has a tendency to get too much into the crunch of things without paying enough attention to immersive descriptions, but he's been getting better. This week's session was the first time I really felt like he'd put effort into making his encounters unique and memorable, and more interesting than us just getting bum-rushed by enemies.
We'd been contracted to retrieve an artifact from an old derelict village for this incredibly annoying and intrusive but funny gnomish diviner shopkeep - he's a Critical Role fan and subscribes to the Matt Mercer model of letting the characters cultivate a relationship with a particular shopkeeper throughout their careers.
So there we were, a pretty-boy human bard, a disgruntled drow priestess, a less-than-bright human farmboy turned fighter, an incredibly socially awkward elven druid, and my aging conservastiff half-orc ranger, in the most boring overgrown village in the ass-end of nowhere looking for anything shiny for this gnome we all hated.
Turned out the only semi-erect thing in the area was an apparently dried-up well, so we climbed down and found a large chamber of dry earth with a few puddles of dirty water and something shining from the depth of a small pool, and none of the monsters the gnome had vaguely hinted we should be able to handle.
Excited and wanting to be in and out before the occupants returned, the druidess volunteered to jump in and get the object. Obviously sensing the looming ambush, we tied a rope around her waist and let her do it. As soon as she surfaced with the object, she was immediately crushed by something invisible in the water. The rest of us had just enough time to yank her out of there before the damn puddles rose up and tried to alternately beat and drown us.
The next several rounds were spent frantically slashing at the things through their resistance to weapon damage while running around the room risking grapples ourselves to reinforce whoever had lost their strength save and was currently drowning, until one of the things soaked up all other water in the chamber, growing two size categories and subsuming us all at once, at which point we all just gave up on escaping, went nuts, and miraculously managed to hack it to death from the inside before the drow lost her last death save.
We all emerged from the well soaked to the bone and royally pissed, with every intention of ripping the gnome off.

So, had my first think on your feet moment as a dm tonight. Group arrived at the city, they were escorted into the guard captain's chambers and while meeting with the guard captain. My friends character decided after hearing about the jobs to just attack guard captain. Had not thought that was a possibility but should've expected it from him. So, quickly threw together the fight. After the fight, my friends character lay dead and was brought before the town as a example. Now, I have a lot of thinking of to do for where the campaign is going after that.

After a long hiatus, the group I'm running is about to conclude the campaign by taking on an ancient dragon in her lair. They have a few powerful magic items and some giants backing them up, but stll THEY WILL BE FIGHTING AN ANCIENT DRAGON IN HER LAIR!!!
After this we're changing things up a bit with a Ravenloft adventure.

Started working on some legendary items (inspired by the vestiges on Critical Role). Thought I'd share a couple I feel good about and see what others think. One of them might become a plot hook in a upcoming session.
Faithkeeper Weapon (mace) legendary, (requires attunement by a Paladin or Cleric) Said to have been forged by a being only known to history as The Maker. This mace features gold inlays on all across the weapon. With this weapon, you gain a +1 bonus to initiative, attack and damage rolls. Damage bonus increases to +2 if the creature is undead or fiend. While the weapon is drawn, you and all creatures friendly to you within a 5 foot radius have advantage on saving throws against being frightened. Awoken When this item reaches Awoken status: radius increases to 15 feet Ascended When this item reaches Ascended status: You gain advantage on initiative rolls. Attack and damage roll bonus increases to +2. Undead and fiend damage increases to +4. Radius increases to 30 feet.
Wraps of the Void Wonderous Item, legendary, (requires attunement by a Monk) These deep purple cloth wraps look like ordinary hand wraps but have a distinct outer worldly aura to them. You have a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with your unarmed strikes. When you hit with an unarmed strike, instead of dealing damage you can attempt to push the target back. Target must make a Strength saving throw (DC 13) or be pushed back 10 feet. Awoken When this item reaches Awoken status: Bonus to attack and damage rolls increases to +2. Range increases to 20 feet. Ascended When this item reaches Ascended status: Bonus to attack and damage increases to +3. When you roll a 20 on a d20 for an attack roll, your unarmed strike banishes the target to another plane. Target must make a Charisma saving throw (DC 15). Target is banished on a failed save and immune for 1 hour on a success.

Started the Ravenloft adventure.
I had the mists deposit the party in Barovia in their sleep, sans most of their gear (the quote of the night was the hexblade's cry of "someone stole my campfire!") They ended up walking most of a day (a couple of them in bare feet) before encountering the haunted house intro adventure which will also be their chance to gear up. They start out with tree branches and fireplace pokers and will find more stuff as they work their way through it.
It's kinda cool how the stuff they are finding tells a story about the house and what happened to its occupants. At least one player is really creeped out. One addition I made to the story is have it be an ancestral home to one of the players. The place had long ago become a cautionary tale about what happens to people if they don't lead upright lives "the dark powers will take you"

I've been sorta going back and forth on how I am going to in game deal with one of the PCs. He didn't attack, when the other pc in the room attempted to murder the city's guard captain. He did though try to escape with him. Which failed because neither of them could open a window. I sorta leaning towards conscripting him into service for the guard. Perhaps having to complete one of the original job offers the guard captain had mentioned before the attack, in order to start clearing his name.

I would be inclined to say yes, given that he is from a well known and respected Monk order but they would also be incredibly weary of that. Perhaps they (as well as the captain) feel he isn't all what he claims to be. Might be a good spot to intro the assassin's guild in my homebrewed world, The Crimson Eclipse.

So been procrastinating on working on the next session of my campaign. Due to having this random idea to create some various things (armor, weapons, etc) from different video games. Some I thought I'd share. I'm also open to suggestions for any weapons, armor or items from other games to try and create a DnD variant of.
Armor of the Firebrand (inspired by Battledress of the Provocateur from Dragon Age Origins) Armor (studded leather), very rare (requires attunement) While wearing this armor your Dexterity score increases by 2 to a maximum of 20. You gain a bonus to AC of +2. When an attacker makes an attack against you, you can use your reaction to use the dodge action. The attacker gains disadvantage on the attack roll. Once this feature has been used it cannot be used again until the end of your next turn.
Medallion of the Hunter (inspired by The Witcher's medallion) Wonderous Item, very rare (requires attunement by a Ranger) While wearing this item you cannot be surprised. The medallion can be tuned to detect either magic or creatures. Once this feature has been used it cannot be used again until you finish a long rest. When magic or a creature is detected the medallion will vibrate.

I just can't find people to play DnD with. Yeah, yeah, I know there are sources like Roll20.net, but I'd rather play with physical people than online, and there aren't any people interested in playing DnD in my area. The only person I feel super confident playing with is my little brother, but that would just mean me and him. I realize it's possible to play DnD with just two people, but I'm not a hundred percent confident.

My party's trying to solve a murder mystery involving a remote manor, lycanthropy, hag curses, and prophecy.
Let's see if they can figure it out before someone else gets eaten...

Heh, the party has gotten so paranoid they're refusing help from even genuinely friendly NPCs.
Yet don't realize that one of the NPCs that they are letting hang around them is the Big Bad in disguise!

Good news: The party found the relic and reconsecrated the church just in time to save the village priest. Mission accomplished.
Bad news: In the process, they allowed a number of vampires to run amok in town, leading to the deaths of dozens of men, women, and children.
