With Andromeda's release being seen as mediocre, the Mass Effect 3 ending still being a wound in peoples minds, and Dragon Age: Inquisition being a polarizing game to some degree, there's a lot of people who are either skeptical, frustrated, or downright angry at Bioware. Anthem, with some fans, seems to do no better with Bioware's singleplayer, story-driven playerbase. I wanted to know, if Anthem was considered a commercial success (with critical reception), would that make you more excited for future Bioware games? Would it make you think better of the studio? Or would Anthem's success be indicative of a change in direction for the studio (a change for the worse)?

I was pretty happy with Inquisition and my opinion of Andromeda has softened with time and knowledge of the development problems.
So I don’t think my view would change at all.
EDIT: This is assuming it’s a fun game and not just a financial success.

I really enjoyed both DA:I and Mass Effect Andromeda so, um, business as usual I guess...more of that, please

It would depend on how the game itself actually played out. It being a commercial success really has no bearing on if I actually like the direction that it took or not. That and seeing what the Dragon Age team does with DA4.
Though when it comes to my opinion of BioWare I enjoyed Mass Effect 3 a lot(and the ending being shit didn't bother me as much) and thought DA:I was pretty good even if the world feels empty at times.
The only real disappointment I have with BioWare lately is ME:A. It's the only BioWare game I've played that didn't get multiple playthroughs. I was even able to stomach KotoR's combat(which I think is among the worst in gaming) for a second playthrough.

Not change. It would change owever if they decide to not make DA4 or have the game being a multiplayer game because of Anthem.

My opinion won't change, they make the games I enjoy & I'm happy to support them with that, if info on Anthem reveals that it is not my type of game, then success or no, my opinion won't change.

anthem's critical commercial success or failure wouldn't determine anything for me personally, nor change my opinion. the games quality, story, environment, writing quality... etc. that's what will change my opinion of bioware, for good or ill. i'm not really a fan of MMOs, mainly because their design, structure, and play style usually precludes decent story telling, and player agency. though, if it's actually good, and not a overreaching cash grab by BW or EA i'll receive it as such, and my opinion of bioware will either improve or fall farther than it has already.

My opinion wont change with Anthem but if they release DA4 with gfx's on par with DA:I an ME:A (minus animation ) and not on par with what we have seen with Anthem then you can colour me very disappointed indeed

Change for the worse. It seems likely to me that if Anthem is very successful, Dragon Age and other future games will be done in a similar way. I am simply not interested in that type of game.

Just to clarify, when I say "Critical Reception," I'm specifically referring to the games qualitative aspects (i.e. narrative elements, open world elements, gameplay, player investment, consumer friendliness, etc).

Just to clarify, when I say "Critical Reception," I'm specifically referring to the games qualitative aspects (i.e. narrative elements, open world elements, gameplay, player investment, consumer friendliness, etc). just to clarify your clarification... you're saying that you're using the term "critical reception" to stand in for... a well received quality product? um, couldn't you have just said that? "critical reception" can mean plenty of drastically different things. never mind. still, i have to admit a single title likely won't change my opinion just by itself, well, unless it's a hell of a game. and personally speaking... anthem has to cover ME:A's shortfalls (or pitfalls perhaps) just to break even in my book, as i feel a lot of the resources anthem got were stolen from andromeda, so, it's my feeling that anthem needs to cover it too -- fair or not, though likely not would be my guess.

I feel this is premature. Sure, that could happen, but I'm not sure why they'd want to cannibalize Anthem's sales with gutted MMO-lite versions of Dragon Age and the sort. Is DA's MP even popular enough to warrant such a thing?

I wanted to know, if Anthem was considered a commercial success (with critical reception), would that make you more excited for future Bioware games? Would it make you think better of the studio? Or would Anthem's success be indicative of a change in direction for the studio (a change for the worse)? Did you post this Q on Reddit too? I’m too lazy to check myself. 😉 So my admittedly outlier answer requires some background context. I have amnesia when it comes to video game brand loyalty. Not in a negative, you failed to meet my way overblown expectations too many (once) times so now I hate you for all eternity, way. It’s more in the sense of I don’t hold grudges for missteps and I don’t blindly accept the next turn of the lazy crank just because I enjoyed the first turn either. Everyone gets a fresh start with me and every game is evaluated on its own merits. This has the gigantic advantage of exposing me to new and great things that others, with blinders on, might miss. It also exposes me to a lot of dreck, but what I can’t refund I just chalk up to experience. There are exceptions. I’m hooked on the DAI cliff hanger and want to see what happens next. So to that extent, I hope for anything Anthem can do to make DA4 a great game. Do I worry that Anthem is sucking precious creative juices away from DA4? Not really. I don’t even mind the delay in schedule that much, I can wait. So, no I won’t be more or less excited for future Bioware games. It won’t matter. I won’t think better or worse about the studio. Will Anthem’s success harbinger a change of direction? That’s kind of a silly question, since Anthem is *already* a significant change in direction. Since I believe nothing good for the studio can come from catastrophic failure of Anthem, we’re only really talking about degrees of deflection here in case of success. Modest failure to modest success will simply confirm the new direction. Massive success will inevitably change the studio forever. We have a model for that: Blizzard with Overwatch vs. WoW. This tells me that it’s possible for other games in the portfolio to survive and continue, even when the popular new baby joins the family. The older child might not get the attention it used to, but it won’t be drowned in the river either. Probably.

That's kinda nonsense to ask isn't it?
I mean, obviously if it turns out to be great we'll have a higher opinion of BioWare than if it wasn't.

Considering I have zero interest in Anthem, it won't change my opinion of them. It took their past two releases for me to have the opinion I have of them now. One release that is great won't erase the last two and one that is bad will just re-enforce what opinion I have of them currently.
Like others have said, it's what they do with DA4 that will decide if I move on from Bioware for good or if I continue to be a customer.

The older child might not get the attention it used to, but it won’t be drowned in the river either. Probably. I thought about it, but someone already posted a thread titled, "What if Anthem is Good?" and I figured that pretty much was equivalent to what I have here. Also, while I do frequent the Anthem reddit mostly, I personally hate the formatting options of Reddit. EDIT: While I'm aware that Anthem is a significant departure from the usual Singleplayer driven RPG's, there's undoubtedly a lot of timidness (if not scorn) for the developer; hence why I brought this up. Me personally, I'm cautiously optimistic about the game, and I do want it to succeed. I generally think that developers need to be able to practice their creative freedom in whichever manner they choose. Though not everyone says this, there are a number of people who would outright prefer the game failing; which I don't understand. I can't tell if its because people just want Bioware to fail because they feel they deserve it, or don't want to see their fav franchises fall into ruin. I'd hate to see the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchise fall into obscurity, so I generally think Bioware needs a win with this game tbh.
