Anyone else get the feeling that there's going to be a story emphasis on music and sound in Anthem? In the cinematic trailer we see during E3 it even has lyrics and everything, and Owen talks specifically about "silencing" the shaper relics, rather than "deactivating" (or just turning off), as well as the "Echoes of Creation." This may be just wishful thinking on my part that some actual care and depth has been put into the story/lore of this world. Which part of Anthem of Creation* did you miss when they talked a bit more about the game lore back at EA Play? I can always try to find more although, it's mostly just mentioned as being something important to the plot. They didn't just pick the game name out of the blue as much as people believed back last year. Also, It's not the first time BioWare fixate on songs and musics...*cough*lyrium*cough* *It's the big glowy thing that they silence in the demo. Okay, okay, no need to be snide about it. I just hadn't seen any other references to it and wondered if I was the only one picking it up. Sheesh.

Looking good. I have a feeling this will be the start of a beautiful friendship. Hopefully they won't spoil too much of the story behind the crew before release. I will be in VIP release of course, but still I want as much of the story as possible be non-spoiled when going in.

Mysterious creators that have disappeared leaving strange structures behind, runes you need to collect...anyone else get MEA vibes from that? Then DA with the Gods who have abandoned us and the Wyverns?
I was hoping Anthem would be a little more removed from the other franchises.

Well if we're being honest Bio has never been particularly original with their tropes. If they manage to create rising tension with a solid beginning, middle, and end with interesting characters I'll be happy...and it'll be a major step forward from MEA in any event.

Lord knows Dishonored is derivative but I loved that so it doesn't have to be stunningly original.

Bioware has been that way for as long as I can remember. Even KOTOR had you chasing down ruins of an advanced forgotten species that had an influence on the planets you found the ruins on but then mysteriously disappeared. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Honestly, the more I see, the more I wonder if Anthem is Proto-Thedas. There's a lot of interesting parallels between the two. Like something set in an early age of the world.

Mysterious creators that have disappeared leaving strange structures behind, runes you need to collect...anyone else get MEA vibes from that? This sums up just about every RPG Bioware has created. You can even go back to the original KotOR and the same theme is present.

After watching the video I'm still undecided about Anthem... I like the look of the game and the Javelins look fun to use but as for the rest, well.... Is it 22/02/2019 yet?

Honestly, the more I see, the more I wonder if Anthem is Proto-Thedas. There's a lot of interesting parallels between the two. Like something set in an early age of the world. It would have to be really distant past....or how about the far distant future? Those damned Magisters really made a mess of things. I fully expect a DA and/or ME Easter egg or two...which will be cited as "proof." Yeah, I'm thinking it could be tens to hundreds of thousands of years (or more). While it could be the future, the lore says the gods abandoned this world before it was finished, which leads me to believe it's set in the distant past. Another reason is in the Trespasser DLC, we stumble across that ancient civilization of dwarves (Sha-Brytol), and they're packing machine guns and earthshakers. Weapons that behave like advanced tech, but aren't... just like in Anthem. The farther back in time we go, the more advanced everyone seems. But there's other interesting parallels... Native human population (not from Earth). World with 2 moons (just like Thedas). "Technology" powered by magic, not microchips. Javelins that are essentially fantasy classes. The Gods (Shapers) abandoned the world (parallels to the Maker). A name which also carries over to the dwarves. Giant spiders, Titans, Wyverns, a Swarm Tyrant that looks like Blinky's cousin. Runes that are read off the walls. The parallels with sound/music "Echoes of Creation" "Silencing" Relics (Titans, the Blight). And if I'm really going down this rabbit hole, this "Anthem of Creation" sounds suspiciously like "The Stone".

I'm all for a good old fashioned dungeon crawl, but will Anthem allow for players to do anything in that big open world beyond shooting? Colour me underwhelmed.

Allright, here's my views after seeing the video. Big thanks to bioware for releasing it btw, It's really what we needed to get a clear look at it. Visuals- It LOOKS fantastic. On high end machines... wow. - The sounds are great, and I mean both effects and (background) (atmospheric) music. Intro- The NPC's seem like a jolly bunch with whom you can be friends. Even if tattoo guy, nerd guy and strong independant woman guy is overly stereotypical. But then again, we haven't seen anything yet. I'm more than mildly hopeful. - Animations etc look pretty solid to me, including facial. - The strider has weird feet. - The map / select mission screen looks awesome! Like they really thought it out to streamline the whole 'always online' process and quickly playing with friends/randoms. I'm really hoping this actually also works for me in practice because I'm a rando guy. - I hope the "in between mission screens" are not too much. What I mean is: that you can take your time in the strider if you want, but if you want to repeatedly run missions, you don't have to load too many times. - Damn, loading seems to take a while... How will this be on low end machines? But at least it seems like they play a movie during part of the loading. - The colossus is basically a ranger, but with extra plating around it's head / chest. That's awesome design It really feels like the javelin itself will be your main companion and best fiend. That's an interesting way to think about it. - Your other teammates do superhero landings at the start of the mission on your strider. Awesome. - I couldn't really follow the story through the short intro and the radio chatter. It was confusing and very limited in details. This disturbs me somewhat. But this might just be because it's a demo, we have no background, and it is cut. I mean, why are we shooting up this people's homes without prior warning? That's just rude. Gameplay- Again. Looks and Sounds absolutely gobsmacking. - Djeezes wept. The damage numbers. Okay, I kind of like to see these types of info myself during gameplay but a good thing that you can adapt these puppies to preference, because in the intro video they were really interfering with spatial awareness / obscuring view. - okay. so. I know that maybe the video gives off a biased view because it's only colossus gameplay, but I'm not blown away by it: Negatives: * the colossus felt very restricted in movement compared to what you keep hearing from the people who played the demo. Maybe it's the developer's playstyle, though. Or just the colossus playstyle. That would mean that javelin is just not for me. The storm on the other hand, DID look very mobile, so maybe I'm worrying over nothing. * Loot drops and health pickups EVERYWHERE!!11!1! And they ignored it. I mean, health pickups were really plentiful, but maybe they adjusted it for the demo's sake. Also, having to go around collecting 20 pickups after every scuffle might get annoying. Why can't we auto-collect? I don't want to miss an epic drop just because I didn't see it. Will probably get balanced towards the end of development though. * The guns didn't blow me away (ha!), but maybe that's just because I wasn't playing myself. Also, not a assault rifle type of person and they used that for 90% of the time, so that might have something to do with it. Grenade launcher looked lulz, though. * Fun might heavily depend on who you get as teammates... * there was little iron man factor. Boo. But this might be due to colossus gameplay. Positives: * The flying looked fun. But I hope it's not just a gimmick. * Powers looked very good (railgun ). Combo's looked great too. I wonder how liberal we can be with these. * That colossus super power, ooh, baby. *salivating* * Enemies looked okay, I guess, we did see a lot of variety in one mission, but I wonder how much of the same we'll be killing ultimately. * Teamplay seems rewarding. They took down everything relatively fast, but that's probably because they played this a lot together already and everyone knows his/her role. * we saw nothing where I'd go: "Ohh, I totally can't solo this!" This is a good thing. Means even with sucky teammates or solo you can get shit done. * Boss fight seemed okay for me. I think the reason it looked damage-soaky and easy is because of the modifiers they placed on it for the demo, and the fact that the players knew what to do. ConclusionSo overall, I'm thankful for the video. It all LOOKS good and promising, but gameplay... I dunno. I'd have to play it for myself I suppose. Maybe when you take the controller it all fits. I'm hopeful though.
