This makes sense to me. RDR2 is amazing, but it came out very late and filled with a lot of bugs and online issues. I am sure it would have been higher in numbers if it was an earlier release, but GOW had such a story and such an ending, it was just no contest imo.

GoW should sweep every category it's entered into. Fortnite should sweep every online or multiplayer category it's entered into (even though it was released in 2017). Fun fact, in the STILL PLAYING category of Golden Joystick, they have listed every online MP game EXCEPT Fortnite, lol. They realized no other game on that list would stand a chance against Fortnite. I'm wondering if, because 2017 was such a standout year (HZD, P5, BotW, NA, Cuphead, Hellblade, etc., etc.), 2018 might be a bit of a letdown across the board? GOTY 2017 was Mass Effect: Andromeda for me ... it's about a billion times better than anything you just listed, except Hellblade which was pretty awesome but nowhere near the game MEA is.

Right now the only thing aside from that gives me some hope are first party games because they aren't designed to be huge blockbusters, but hardware sellers so they have lower expectations on sales, which is why a lot of people are talking about God of War and Spider-Man being GOTY contenders due to they don't need to sell three to four million copies to justify their existence they need to generate interest in the PS4. Except both God of War and Spiderman sold way more than 3 - 4 million copies.

My personal GOTY 2018 is Assassin's Creed: Odyssey
It just feels like a labor of love and the recreation of ancient Greece is mind blowing. Outstanding voice acting, characters, locations, weapons, armor, transmog system for armor, incredible levelling up system. It is just fun as hell to play and really user friendly in so many awesome ways. One of my favs of all time.

Just because they did well doesn't mean they had the same type of expectations of a third party publisher during development and planning.

I think they most likely expected to sell pretty well. I do get your point though. Their entire existence doesn't hinge on 'all the sales' it's more of a 'make a bad ass game and worry more about the spectacle and quality to sell consoles' kind of thing.
I was just pointing out that they sold incredibly well. Not trying to argue.

Thanks to some serious saving of money last year, I didn’t get the chance to buy any new games until just after Christmas. So even though I only started playing AC:O last week, I have absolutely fallen in love with it and I’m counting it as my personal GOTY of 2018. Between that and Anthem, I doubt that I’ll have time for any other games this year either - so that’s even more money saved!

I am 140+ hours into AC:O (only in chapter 7, still have loads of side stuff to do) ... I took a break to play Spiderman while I waited for a specific patch. Patch is out now for a couple weeks and I am almost finished with all Spiderman DLC's ... can't wait to get back to Odyssey. The game world the developers crafted is really just something else. It feels like a statement by the team at Ubisoft. A statement that says: "You cannot fuck with us. This is Ancient Greece." The world building team behind Odyssey is just amazing.

In all honesty... I think MEA is the only 2017 game I actually remember. Rest of that year kinda... faded away.
I suppose there were several ArmA DLCs which was pretty awesome, though...
In 2018? Yeah. Kingdom Come and Post Scriptum were both just too good to not be contenders. Red Dead Redemption 2 left a shitton of impressions, too. Way more than God of Boi.

My best game that i played for now for 2018 is this one but i have to wait for Red Dead Redemption II and i also have not finished Assassins Creed Odyssey yet. And my worse game of 2018 is Far Cry 5. Well i have played and finished RDR II and also AC Odyssey but my best game of the year 2018 is still 1. God of War 2. Red Dead Redemption II and 3. Assassin's Creed Odyssey.

Having played all 3 i agree with Patricia, with it being very close between GOW an RDR2, both of which are probably easily the best games i've played this generation, in RDR2 case the SP campaign as onlines a freaking rip off.

I haven't played AC Odyssey or RDR2 (not my type of games)...but i'am currently playing GOW and since i have been on this ride for GOW 1, 2, and 3.....this truly feels like a true evolution of Kratos....the relationship and dynamic between his Son, the conversations they are having, the challenge presented by Kratos son to try and get Kratos to soften his hardened image is being presented in a superb fashion....writing has been 20 times better than the previous games, the combat is as great and satisfying as ever and i found myself stopping and appreciating the incredible art direction and design this game implements......again beautifully written and an incredible showing from Sony's 1st party division.... I thought Kratos was a flat character in 3...just a raging madman bent on revenge with no personality at all....this Kratos currently feels more organic, has a personality and depth...i initially thought his son was going to fall victim to being an annoying brat, but there was sincere one on one compelling moments between these two that just made me laugh....true father and son banter/things that felt amazingly natural....
