I would mention one thing I noticed and really enjoyed about picking up resources... but I can't. NDA and all. So much to discuss after January 25th...

I am also slightly offended with calling this the "Elfroot Syndrome", something normal shouldn't be called a syndrome. Yes, I find it normal to pick everything that isn't nailed down and horde it in a video game. I do it all the time. Exactly! It's not a problem, we can stop at any time we want... honest!
And besides, sometimes you just run into them when you're exploring... halfway up a mountain in a hard to reach spot... which was a perfectly legitimate detour that happened to coincide with them.
It wasn't like we plan it or anything, because we've memorised where the materials regularly spawn on the map over countless hundreds/thousands of hours of repeated playthroughs... don't be ridiculous!

To this day I deny all allegations that I timed and farmed a certain area in a certain MMO which had eight spawns of a rare resource which respawned on an 8 hour interval. It wasn't me and even if it was, I always left the bottom right corner unfarmed for other people (I really didn't). It certainly didn't make me filthy rich and I never got my guild to declare open war to anyone that tried to compete with me for the resource.

It certainly didn't make me filthy rich and I never got my guild to declare open war to anyone that tried to compete with me for the resource. funny I did something similar in one game, the main difference I suspect is that it repoped 2 minutes after it was collected but in a different part of the map and I farmed that shit for weeks using an army of alts once I mapped all the locations since it only took a few moments to load up the collector accounts in my multi vm setup (at the time each of my machines could run 12 vm's on a script until their bags were full whilst I was at work and then logout) I stopped anyone else from getting that quest finished for a whole month before I crashed the economy by dumping every mat I didnt need onto the one vendor that offered 1000 gold per item for it (the game took an hour to check sales and adjust prices, the rarest resource in the game went from costing 10k and selling for 1k to costing 1 gold and selling for 10, of course by that time I had sold several thousand of them at the top price and maxed out the amount of gold in my bags and screwing things up for everyone else until the devs patched it) there was another item in DAI that you could buy form one vendor and sell to another and in the process double your money until the devs patched it (which I thought was funny) hopefully there will be something in anthem that lets you make a but load of currency for minimal effort as well

They'll find ways to make players hate the grind. I'm sure of that. They have no incentive to do this; in fact they have every incentive to avoid it. Mats are presumably only for crafting gear, while the MTs in Anthem are only for the cosmetic items. So making the game excessively grindy (when it comes to gear) will only serve to piss people off about something they have to do and can't shortcut with MTs, which will in turn probably make them stop playing, which means they are no longer around to maybe pay for the MTs, which ultimately means less revenue for Bioware/EA.

You probably dont have played many of these games and likely not looked at DAIMP and MEAMP. You're right I've never touched DAIMP or MEAMP. But if their MT model was anything like ME3MP, then there would have been a reason to make the grind at least a little bit annoying (to get people to actually buy the MTs). In Anthem that would not be the case. While Bioware could still utterly fail to strike the right balance between too grindy and too "casual" in Anthem, they at least will be motivated to get it right instead of actively trying to make the grind feel off to push MTs.

You're right that the balance is not easy, since it depends on the audience that is playing the game. And that can have a broad range of tolerance. Even more important they don't fumble it up like in MEAMP where it took like half a year to identify gameplay concerns and then drop a huge loot dilution anyway. We have heard very little about future content plans. Basically I heard nothing. Now I don't see me playing a game with only 4 characters for very long so what's it gonna be? An extended loot grind for masterwork inscriptions? Because that's the easy solution in trying to secure player retention and you need to keep players playing in order to sell the cosmetics. Thing is, people will mostly buy vanity stuff for a game they keep playing - but if there is only grind to play and little variety... Well, I'm not going to buy shiny skins to look better while farming the same stuff over and over.

[/div][/quote] Intentionally or not you describe pretty much what Ben Irving did to SWTOR when he was in charge of it. The player backlash was so big that he got "promoted" to Anthem rather quick. I am not worried...too much...yet...

"The Elusive Elfroot" needs to be an easter-egg in Anthem, located in an out-of-the-way, insanely hard to get to spot in the game that is fraught with danger and enemies. After picking it up, you're greeted with a message that reads;
"You didn't need to come all this way, nor did you need to pick this up, especially since you can't even use this anyway! Seriously, we think you may have a problem with Elfroot, you should seek help... we're all worried about you!"

Thing is, people will mostly buy vanity stuff for a game they keep playing - but if there is only grind to play and little variety... Well, I'm not going to buy shiny skins to look better while farming the same stuff over and over. Also, there's only four Javelins in the game - how many different skins per Javelin would anyone want to buy anyway? I generally own one alternate skin for some of my Warframes, for example. A handful of syandanas, a handful of armor sets. About two weapon skins. Of course, cosmetic items in Warframe don't come from random containers, I buy exactly what I want without any random roll involved. Anthem could have cosmetic boxes like BF1's battlepacks, which also contained cosmetic items only and could be bought with real money. But the item you got from it was rolled randomly, with battlepacks that had a higher chance at rare cosmetics costing more money, and you could get duplicates. On the bright side, you could also earn them through gameplay. I'm curious to see how it will be implemented in Anthem.

"No, lootboxes are confirmed." It has been confirmed that the game will NOT contain RNG loot boxes, loot chests, goody bags, lunch boxes or anything similar. Microtransactions will allow for real purchase of known priced cosmetic items as an alternative to buying them with earned 'in-game' currency.

The key thing for me about "Elfroot Syndrome" was the press a button to scan your environment and find the items, not to mention going by the loot video last week crafting has been designed to fill out what piece you don't have and isn't a requirement if you aren't looking for specific things. If you used KBM, and didn't rebind from 'v', I am sorry for your hand and my hand knows that pain ;_;
