Now I don't see me playing a game with only 4 characters for very long so what's it gonna be? An extended loot grind for masterwork inscriptions? Because that's the easy solution in trying to secure player retention and you need to keep players playing in order to sell the cosmetics. Thing is, people will mostly buy vanity stuff for a game they keep playing - but if there is only grind to play and little variety... Well, I'm not going to buy shiny skins to look better while farming the same stuff over and over. Agreed. I think this is the biggest longevity risk. If there isn't something fun to do besides the loot chase, it won't have the same return-rate for players as Overwatch or Fortnite. They have to get at least one key game loop right or people will find other things to do.

If there isn't something fun to do besides the loot chase, it won't have the same return-rate for players as Overwatch or Fortnite. They have to get at least one key game loop right or people will find other things to do. The game-loop thing is what got me thinking about this, because Fortnite is not really a game that I'd typically think I would play, but as someone who tried Fornite (BattleRoyale) because it was free, I do find myself going back into it. Just some thoughts: - I don't like PvP, but I'm still playing Fortnite - although I play it more as short-term-survival - I don't really do challenges, but I'm doing them in Fortnite - there are silly or fun ones, some that require sleuthing, I sometimes get the kill-people ones done as well - I'm not big on micro-transactions, but I've bought some stuff for Fortnite, just because I was having fun with the game.
It certainly got something right that's for sure, because on the outside it doesn't have anything that I'm interested in. A few things I can think of:
- The seasons and the world change every 10 weeks - there is some good variation, and getting back in to see what's different is interesting - Challenges are added every week during a season - you have 10 weeks to complete all challenges, and they cover a good swath of different things - The "Battle Pass" is self sustaining from season to season if you level up enough - you can earn enough to pay for the next one, you just won't have extra cash for more mtx - They have consistently added new features - The matches are pretty quick and there are different game modes, which they have also added to - Within the There Can Be Only One framework, there actually are different ways to get to the end of a match - It's stupid fun - I guess you could be all Super Serious about it, but the whole style of the thing lends itself to being just "fun"
Anyway, sorry for derailing.

Maybe I'm missing something, but shouldn't I play a video game because it's fun (which was my takeaway from regack 's point)? If it's not fun, if it feels tedious or onerous, there's a whole lot in real life that I can do for that "feeling" without paying someone to "allow" me to do it. Over time, I learned that "shooters" without a story just bored me fairly quickly. I also learned that games that had big stories were interesting. Those that were "on rails" … a story but no real role playing … generally I got one run and done … at most two. I could really enjoy the story, but once the story was told, replay-ability was not really a thing.
That's when I discovered RPGs … specifically Mass Effect. I'd found what I was looking for … a game, with a story, that had replay-ability … because I could make different choices and change the tone/tenor/flavor/style of the storyline. In some cases, I could even change the ending.
I even got poked and prodded into playing DA, by some nefarious "BSN Jesus" … and had a lot of fun there. And for all the naysayers, I really liked DA2 and I'm really glad I played it. I see the warts, but that's OK … the base game, the DLC, meeting Cassandra and Varric … it was worth it.
So I was surprised that I fell in love with ME3MP … had never done an MP before. But I really, really enjoyed it, even though I really, really sucked at it. At least for a long time … then I got a bit better. I was not surprised that I enjoyed MEAMP … probably not as much as ME3MP, but still, I've had a lot of fun.
So Anthem … kinda turns ME3 and MEA on their heads. MP isn't the tacked on side show, it's the main event, with a SP element that gives me a story. My biggest concern is that it's not a game with a lot of "replay-ability" in the true RPG sense. Go back to the game, play it some more … hopefully. But it doesn't sound like I will be starting a new run, to explore different decisions on the SP side. I think I will miss that. And why I might enjoy Anthem (I hope so), but it won't replace RPGs like ME or DA.
So thank you regack for the derailment, it gave me an excuse to "blah, blah, blah" about how I think Anthem might fit in my view of what's fun to do in the video game world.

The odd thing is that the MP crowd would say SP RPG games are the ones with no replayability. Whereas when I was playing Destiny, I could drop in for a 20 minute session and shoot shit or loot stuff and that could be very satisfying.

Whereas when I was playing Destiny, I could drop in for a 20 minute session and shoot shit or loot stuff and that could be very satisfying. Yeah, they're just different kinds of replayability. A 20-hour story that can change a bit, and also have some combat, or just... shootin' & lootin' real quick. I need some kind of spark for the MP version. For ME(3 or a)mp it's the SP side that gets me interested in the universe, and I can have fun playing with powers and other characters that I can't play in the SP, for short shootin' sessions. Sort of like @grinch, I only tried the MP in ME3 because I saw it on the menu when I was about to dive back into my SP campaign and I was like "huh, I wonder what it's like"... I got hooked. I actually stopped playing my SP campaign for like a year, because of that. But half the reason I'm so invested in it, is because it builds on the universe than I know from the SP. We'll see how well this all works in Anthem, when I finally get to try the demo in February. Will it be stupid-fun like Fortnite, or will it need the spark from the... storyline to get me invested in the world and keep me wanting to play? I just don't know, and I don't think I will know, until I actually try it out.

For the record, 7 runs of DAI over here. I’m not expecting to get that kind of replay out of the story for Anthem, particularly since they are discouraging making more than one pilot character, so I think all the replay focus will be on the coop stuff.

Will it be stupid-fun like Fortnite Might not be stupid like Fortnite, but it might still be fun. The thing I'm waiting the most with Anthem is the "replay missions" feature. There are some missions in ME2/ME3 (and even MEA) that I would like to be able to replay without having to go through all the game because I found them fun in term of objective/map/encounters. Anthem will allow to do that...now they just need to make fun missions. Now if all the missions are the collect "elfroot" kind, that might not be that fun to replay...

You've played DAI 7 times? I haven't even finished it once. Probably started it like 7 times though...

Yeah, I know, I’m pretty below par. 😉 Plenty of folks in the DA forum that are in the double digits. Truth be told, two of those runs were dragon hunting speed runs where I tried to kill all the dragons with the lowest possible xp level, so did not reach the end game.
