Man, you can find plenty of hope in the Mass Effect trilogy. The fact that the galaxy is made up of tons of intelligent beings and about 90% of them get along makes it more optimistic than a lot of sci-fi out there. Reapers excluded, the Mass Effect universe wouldn't be a bad place to live as a regular joe. It wasn't so much that the MET was dark, but rather Andromeda was incredibly light and breezy in tone which was garish to a lot of people, including myself. This... There was nothing thought-provoking about Andromeda., and its 'tone' was one without focus, without purpose, without drive, without motivation. Andromeda was unoriginal and boring. That is its main problem. The Kett are basically doing the same thing the Reapers were doing in the trilogy; zombifying species for their own reproduction. Kind of makes me wonder what about MEA is "hope punk". The player is basically doing the same thing he/she was doing in ME2; In ME2 you looked for people, in MEA you look for planets. In ME2 you made them loyal, in MEA you made them viable for colonization. Same type of structure, no originality. Then there's the illogical inconsistencies; We can travel to another galaxy, but we can't call someone to finish a quest. You have to physically travel between planets & stations to talk to someone in order to do so. The amount of meaningless quests is atrocious too. I can go on and on. Short version? The plot was at the level of ME2 (i.e. poor), the sidequests were at the level of ME1 (i.e. poor), the fetching was at the level of ME3 (i.e. too much), the characters were somewhere between ME1 and ME3 level (i.e. vastly inferior to ME2), the UI was somewhere between ME1 and ME3 (i.e. unintuitive, bloated, buggy) etc. The only things Andromeda did right were the environmental graphics, the handling of the vehicle and the combat.

The settings aren't as solid as you think go ask about the Star Wars sequels in the Star Wars thread and you will get a very heated debate about it. There are a lot of loudmouths out there that will rant, rave, and scream about how "Disney ruined the Star Wars Universe" or that "Micheal Bay ruined The Transformers Universe" or that "Alex Kurtzman ruined Star Trek" or that "Hasbro/WotC ruined Forgotten Realms so give me a fucking break.
Also there are a LOT of people who don't know a fucking thing about storytelling in any medium, claiming to be experts.
I simply know what I like and what I don't like and what I grown out of. I'm sick and tied of grimdark sci-fi, which is what the story MET was (especially part 3).
I've grown out of that phase of my life, now I want my sci-fi a little more optimistic and hope punk more like MEA, Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Who, Farscape and all of Star Trek than the likes than The Expanse, Firefly/Serenity, Battlestar Galactica, Torchwood, Babylon 5 and the MET.
Most of the grim dark sci-fi isn't mature, thought-provoking, or even cool. It's just stupid nihilistic pretentiousness that has nothing to say than "Life sucks, and then you die." and if that is your jam have had it hoss, but for me I'll be watching real mature, thought-provoking, and really cool sci-fi that has things to say and offers me something more valuable: HOPE.
Darkness has it's place in stories certainly but when it's constantly used with little or no light over and over, over and over, over and over, that not only becomes boring but it also becomes bad not only fans but also for society and culture at large as well.
I don't think the light vs dark tone has anything to do with it. Ask yourself why the light tone Citadel DLC in ME3 was praised so much, and the light tone Andromeda was criticized so much. It can even be argued that Andromeda is 'grim dark' by the way, considering what the Kett are doing to the other species, but that's another story. Calling MET or MEA grim dark is amusing to me because both are far from it. Like calling a 2lbs tea cup Yorkie a bear killer. Which would be true if you are talking about a teddy bear. MET has plenty of light parts that keep it from being grim dark. But also enough darkness to keep it form being noble bright as well. MEA is just what happens if you let the writers of Marvel movies write a Mass Effect game. Jokes every 5 minutes, inconsistent tones, playing up the bad guy only to make them easily defeated with no real negative consequences to what happened.
Nah if you want to call something grim dark you have to at least get close to grandpa 40k. You know were the Tyranids will attack with over whelming force ripping bodies apart limb from limb then dragging their still screaming torso to the big digestive pits. Then smaller nids will follow behind sucking up all your blood from the ground till they are bloated before throwing themselves into the same digestion pits to be absorbed by the hive fleets in space.
Calling MET or MEA grim dark is hilarious to me.

Anything darker than Arthur the Aardvark is grimdark.

When I post, I do have thick enough skin to handle anything. As much as I love my ideas, I am not expecting Bioware to catered to me at all.

If MEA is what to be expected from future ME games then I'll treat it like I do with CoD games, something that you buy because there's no games out that you like or because you need a break from your other games that you like.

I mean, I don't have to know SirSourpuss' views to know that he's being ironic. I think a very few people would say that a game, no matter how much they might love it, is perfect. Besides, of course, the 'art' reference.
