I know it doesn't mean much, but I saw a poll once where most straight women picked either Cullen or Solas, but Blackwall was popular among the gay men in the poll. Yeah... the fact that Blackwall and Iron Bull were to be the main f/m romance options sort of proves that they don't necessarily go by what they think players will like the most and such, but with characters they find fitting for romance or find interesting (on a personal level as a writer) to create a romance for. If they hadn't gotten that extra year, there would be no Cullen or Solas romances at all. But you know what? I truly don't think that straight women would have been as entitled or pissy about their options as straight men have been. Disappointed? Sure. But not to the severe degree that discussions of how "ugly" and "mannish" Cassandra and Josephine are dominate the conversation whenever the issues comes up. In fact, I don't see any of the other orientations, of whose people dislike whatever options, reacting to as severe a degree.

Putting aside warrior-woman Cassandra with scars and short hair, can you explain exactly what is wrong with Josephine? I don't see how she can be deemed unattractive by any standard. A real woman with her looks would absolutely be TV/film worthy. I don’t think she’s particularly good looking. Even putting that aside if she was supposed to be more mainstream, then Disney/chaste romance is wholeheartedly not. Wow I think Josephine is stunning.

You see, the truth about romances is that no matter who we get, someone always ends up getting fucked. Getting '' fucked '' is a bit... intense of a wording, none of us get fucked unless there's a clear inequality in content distribution. And in terms of Dragon Age, I don't think they've done horrendously in any installment. Though I AM raising my eyebrow at 4 straight female romances in Inquisition. Haha... I read Salos's post completely differently than you; "fucked" in the positive way for the people that actually like the options, because there are "always" people that like them. I'm curious to know which of us is right! Well, the options I hope for don’t have any of that kind of stuff going on.

I think Blackwall should have been bi. It's hard to say how popular he would have been among gay men, but I think it would have helped to give them another option because as much as I love Dorian's character, the sassy gay BFF is overplayed, and Iron Bull has the BDSM angle, which can be off putting. I know it doesn't mean much, but I saw a poll once where most straight women picked either Cullen or Solas, but Blackwall was popular among the gay men in the poll. I mean it's because when you are used to not getting content catered to you, you'll be happy as hell when you get at least SOMETHING. That's why I couldn't put down Dragon Age for a long while, despite now understanding that both of my options are really meh and appearance wise not really my type. But I still appreciate them both A LOT.

I tend to not complain because most games, imo, are made for the straight male demographic so I tend to just be grateful for what I can get.

I totally would romance him if he was an option, a million times, but I still prefer a little, you know, edge. Just something to break out of that generic hot guy mold. Longer hair, for instance, that is so frowned upon on guys, that'd make me crazy for Cullen. Good thing he has short hair...

I don’t think she’s particularly good looking. Even putting that aside if she was supposed to be more mainstream, then Disney/chaste romance is wholeheartedly not. That's hardly specific. Why isn't your opinion an outlier, just as you claim of those men who do like her (and Cassandra)? As for the rest, this is primarily about physical attributes, and your post was about that, so the content of her romance is inconsequential to this discussion. I've obviously only got my own opinion which is nothing to do with colour and do with face/hair etc. I'd actually say vivienne is the prettiest woman in inquisition but once again bald isn't a mainstream western look.
Maybe my view of her is an outlier. The fact that this is a topic that has pretty much come about off the back of Inquisition hints that she's not viewed as some glamorous goddess.

I know some people prefer not to, but if you do, there's a Cullen mod on Nexus that gives him long hair and a face texture mod that scruffs him up a bit. There's also a Cullen bi mod.

There's also a Cullen bi mod. I don't understand the appeal of using mods to drastically alter a character's design from what the artists intended. To me, that's a part of who they are as people. Changing that, the player having that control, makes them seem less real.

I don't mod him to have long hair because I don't like long hair on men.

There are mods that do that, and have done for all three games.

My favorite mod is the NPC Subtle Tweaks by Ascendia, because that face shine needs to gtfo. The high res version 3 tweak is the one I like for Cullen, and the tousled hair mod.

There was an interesting survey done a few years ago. Men and women were asked to build the "perfect female face". www.cosmopolitan.com/uk/beauty-hair/news/a24480/men-womens-perfect-female-faces/The research revealed that men prefer blonde hair, full lips, and strong cheekbones but also a petite nose, less prominent forehead and finer eyebrows.
Women see the epitome of beauty as raven hair, a stronger nose and forehead profile, strong brows and narrower bone structure.I'll paste those two images below and then people can answer a couple of questions - which face does Josephine most closely resemble, and are we judging Josephine's beauty through the male or female gaze? The perfect face according to women: The perfect face according to men:

Man, I wish the features weren't labeled with the women's faces from which they were taken. I can't help but seeing them as freaky Franken-faces, now.
To answer the question, other than the black hair, I can't see that Josephine resembles either and I actually find her more attractive than either of those Franken-women.

But ANYWAY, the point is men see different things in women as beautiful. I've seen more women say Josephine is beautiful then men, which shows Dragon Age is built through a more female gaze compared with Mass Effect which was built through a more male gaze.

They should just make all romanceable characters as hideous as possible, but make all the non romance NPCs super hot and always horny but nothing can be done about it.

Not a fan of the blonde. I don't think those lips work on anyone but Jolie herself.
Overall, I think the women have better taste here.
