Beet, you've expressed interest in a Dragunov before, so how common is 7.62x54R in your neck of the woods? I reckon there must be some Mosin Nagants there but IDK. Very common, lots of Mosins here because of the war, and people generally like them. I used to have a scoped Mosin Nagant I made special match grade ammunition for, it shot 1 MOA groups if I did my part. Wonderful cartridge. Funny thing mentioning the Dragunov, last night I dreamed I got me a SVD Dragunov, but as I was shooting it for the first time I realized recoil was very little and the holes in the target kinda small. During further investigation I saw a ''.223 Rem.'' stamped into the side of the receiver and I was like NOOOOOOOOOOOO not 5.56 I WANTED A 7.62x54! Then I woke up all sweaty. True story. Lol, that's one heck of a dream. Why wouldn't you want one in 5.56?

Nothing wrong with the .223, but I dislike big heavy guns with small calibers, small calibers are only attractive in small compact guns, big guns need to be in big calibers. Just imagine you had a desert eagle in 9mm. Ewww. Or a big SUV with a 3 cylinder engine. Yuck. That's just wrong.

On the subject of AKs, there's commercial subsonic rounds that cycle properly.

That and the lower ammo cost. Its why I've been trying to find an AK in 5.56 on gun broker recently. Want to ask my local shop if they'd take it, alter it to NY specifications, then transfer it to me.
Needs to be one listed though...

For a 5.56 AK there's the Beryl.

For a 5.56 AK there's the Beryl. Yea, sadly there's only 1 on gun broker, for like 4 grand.
I was looking in the sub 1 grand area.

Hmm, well, you can look into AK-101s or whatever clones might be available. Those are actual Russian 5.56 AKs.

Yea, I'm seeing plenty of AK's in the 7.62 chambering. But, when I checked the pricing for the 7.62 rounds, they were like a dollar a round. 5.56 is something like 50 cents a round. Just makes more economic sense to go with the 5.56.

Try an AK based design instead of an actual AK. Preferably one that takes STANAG magazines (AR15 mags) and lets you add optics to it without having to drill goddamn holes in the receiver, if that's NY legal. There's plenty of AK based designs out there that piss all over the original in terms of both design and build quality, no need to waste good money retrofitting an actual AK when there's guns out there that are effectively pre-refitted in the factory. The Israeli Galil would be a good pick if its available. Free bottle opener with every purchase.

One option blokes like Matt in restrictive states can look into when it comes to .223/5.56 are lever action rifles chambered in them.
(There's one in .308 too apparently)

That can't be right, a buck a round is usually .308 super match grade ammunition, 7.62x39 should run at nearly the same prices as .223, and that's 0.30 / 0.45 a piece. Heck, .308 ball should not be mroe than 50 or 60 cent per round. There you go, 184 dollars 1000 rounds, thats .18 cents a piece www.luckygunner.com/7-62x39-122-gr-fmj-wolf-1000-rounds-bulk

I only found 1 store that ships to my front door. And they charge a buck a round.

Could be the Galil (if they were under a grand), could be the Sig 556, ect. Just...not seeing anything for that price point. Though I am looking for something with either a non-threaded barrel, or a longer barrel (18 inches and up) that could be cut down as needed too. So...maybe that has something to do with it as well?

hmm but there crying about the noise and the smoke, there crying about folks wanting to own field artillery pieces and of course they are crying about stuff like grapeshot... I mean personally if it was me and I was reduced to blackpowder weapons then I would have short flared barrel (blunderbuss style) pistol and musket for that scattershot home defense scene as well as several different weapons for different uses (proper rifle for long range, different pistols for close/intermediate range and of course both the multibarrel deck cannons, alongside the balistea (both black powder operated riffled barrel stake launcher, and the more traditional oversized crossbow spike launcher) if the anti gun retreads want to push the old school then start building siege weaponry using modern materials add in a couple of rewind motors and I can guarantee they will go back to the much more public friendly modern firearms the very first time some nutter launches a few hundredweight of rubble into a schoolyard....

Here's what the Kalashnikov group hopes the Russian military adopts to replace the SVD. It's chambered in the same 7.62x54mmR cartridge and accepts the same magazines.

The longevity of the 7.62x54r is just amazing. It is the first real modern cartridge of the Russians and it will probably stay till conventional firearms will be replaced with laser gattlings, railguns and bolters. And its a good round as well, as long as the system can deal with the rim. I have reloaded many 7.62x54r and you can make them as accurate as .308 or other similar sized rounds.

'54R is still going strong in machine gun form too, like in Russia's current GMPG the Pecheneg.
Seeing videos of machine guns in action like this really shows how much courage an opposing soldier must be to advance in an open field against such a killing machine and not simply go "fuck this" and run in the opposite direction.

Well, nowadays you don't advance into machine gun fire anyway, you grab your phone and order an airstrike or an artillery strike and be done with it.
