Do you recommend reading the non-primary books? Of the spinoff series, I have only read the Saganami Island and Crown of Slaves books.I liked them well enough, and definitely tie in to the second half of the main series. Though to be honest, after Echoes of Honor, I found the quality of the books dropping off a lot. I don't wanna spoil things, but the series takes a new direction that I found a lot less interesting. Cheers, I'll hold off on the spin-offs then and thanks for the tip re the latter books, its always good to have your expectations managed so as to lessen any disappointment or to be pleasantly surprised.

let s give this thread a small bit of non SciFi dope ;p It s been my favourite french writer since i m, well, not young anymore. This "horseman on the roof" is one of his more well known work (made it to movie), but it s far less poetic and direct as the books i loved. Still a very good read now that i m not with the hero alone facing cholera deads for 300 pages anymore.

Still on Game of Thrones. I'm little over a quarter through it now. I can't read like I used to. I read before bed and I'm lucky to make it 15 minutes before I fall asleep. When I was younger, I could read for hours.

Just finished reading Circe by Madeline Miller, liked it but just once I'd like to see an ~enlightened~ character be offered the choice between immortality and mortality and just fucking laugh at the idea of choosing to be mortal.

So skipped the book I was going to read and started the Honor Harrington Books by David Weber and finished Book 1 last night. I really enjoyed it, she is a great character and after reading The Empire of The Bones Saga it was good to not have any space magic to solve problems. Bit intimidated by the number of books in the series though!!!! So finished Honor of The Queen last night and really enjoyed it, some fantastic writing and great story points. The Nimitz I sort of anticipated but it was still really good and the scene where they rescued the two female crew members was terrible but fantastic, first time a book has genuinely upset me for a long time.

Speaking of HH I am on...finally...the last of the 'main series'. Maybe for all of time. Uncompromising Honor: It was funny A Rising Thunder did sort of rally a bit immedietly after I lambasted it...but not enough to really do much to save it. Good book imo but the beginning really dragged and the other stuff felt a little...unimportant? I just don't agree with the plotlines that Weber chose to focus on in that book and would've much rather him focus on the Honor specific ones (seems to be quite a complaint in the last few books). I mean I get it and it is important showing things from the bad guy perspective but I just think we could've heard about some of this second hand after the fact rather then the things we did hear about second hand...after the fact. Anyways Uncompromising Honor is off to a good enough start so far. Still not enough focus on my favorite characters and the action is going on away from Manticore a lot of the time...and I found it a little convineient how they found out about a sort plot point...but still desceent enough book so far. Do like the cat and mouse that is being played and the SLN is finally starting to catch up a little bit. Though I am sure its all going to The Other Guys's plan still.

I finally finished reading the Hyperion Cantos series: I was critical of the first book because it just ended with no resolution and I feel all books in a series should have some type of closure. However I was very happy with the series as a whole and the ending that was presented. As with all series of books or long books in which you get to know characters I was rather melancholy at the end of the series. Now I have to decide whether to get some more sci fi or go back to a few old school 19th century stuff.

I still think she should have been killed off in At All costs, as originally planned. Especially since The Crown of Slaves books ended up accelerating the SL and Mesa storyline a generation sooner than Weber originally planned.

Finished The Lost Fleet and the Lost Fleet: Beyond the Frontier series by Jack Campbell. Very good reads, though they did feel a little bit cookie cutter in terms of plot progression after going through all ten novels back to back. Then again, I guess any author's writing style would come across a bit same-y if one binges their entire collection of stories Anyways, really liked the description of the fleet battles, at how things would actually play out on a battlefield the size of a solar system. And the aliens, when they are introduced, are a nice refreshing dose of 'alien' in terms of their motivations and at how each one approaches combat.

He's currently doing a prequel series called "The Genesis Fleet" about the formation of the Alliance. Beyond the Frontier also has a companion series called The Lost Stars about what's going on at Midway (it runs parallel to Beyond the Frontier)

But TBH that was a while ago and all I remember (wrongly or rightly) was that it contained quite a bit of violence. On the Sci-Fi theme have you read The Expanse books by James S A Corey? I read these abou 12 months ago after a long break from Sci-Fi novels and it reinvigorated my interest, I thought they were great. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Expanse_(novel_series)

Whether or not you do, this is the first book of a mil sf series that isn't bad. *Because I snagged every Jane Austen book through Amazon, I keep getting recommendations for Amish romance books (yes, that is a genre). Oddly, I have never gotten a recommendation any Georgette Heyer books (which would be the logical follow up to Austen) . Amazon works in mysterious ways.

In regards to inepensive books, there are several services that will let you know when books go on sale. I signed up with Bookbub which sends me an email every day with ten to twenty bargains. I buy a book through them, on average, about once a week. The last book I bought through them is this which is still on sale for $1.99. My friend told me there is a way to hunt through Amazon for bargains but as it sounded like too much work I don't remember what she said.

I'll add that to my list. Uh, I dunno. Maybe you want to steer clear of the Covenants and the Gaps, for awhile? What you absolutely need to read is Donaldson's collections of short stories. "Daughter of Regals" and "Reeve the Just". Those are just brilliant and IMO the best things he has written. ...As for his mega-works (Covenant & Gap), well, those are (from the protagonists' perspectives) pretty masochistic, self loathing and dark, and as said 'violent'. I've read them and they're magnificent in their way, but I don't regard them as positive experiences. At the best, they represent some kind of catharsis. There are two volumes about Mirrors, forgot their titles, that's a decent novel by Donaldson.

So finished book 4 of the Honor Harrington Books "Field of Dishonor" and now on to book 5 "Flag in Exile". Enjoyed book four a lot and book 5 has started well. Sometimes the plot is a little too obvious in these books but they are an enjoyable ride anyway.
