I just finished reading this book: A very good book and once again a semi villain/anti hero steal the show. Best part of the book was a multi chapter battle of wits between two characters. Brilliantly done. My nieces husband gave me two books of George Orwell essays so i will read these next.

I have decided I hate forwards and Introductions to books. Most of those things should come at the end of the book.

I'm currently reading The Lying Game by Ruth Ware. Next will be the first Witcher book. Since I'm hooked up with the TV show, I thought I'll try the source material.

Sapkiewski is fairly popular here in Germany, I think.

I'd read the books if I could find them translated from Polish into English......Can't seem to find them I got them all from Amazon. Yes, I see them too. The whole 7-book box set for 82.99 CAD......Not a bad price actually, only 13.43 CAD after tax per book. Cheaper than what you'd find them in-store at Chapters for...that's for certain. They mark-up the cover price by easily 20% or more....I know, I used to work there....many moons ago. Will keep my eye on these, though right now I'm more interested in finishing The Lightbringer series by Brent Weeks.

Currently reading some more Sci-Fi, what can I say I am a sucker for it!!!!!! I am up to book three in this series of 10 books however the books themselves are not very long. The first one was a bit slow going but they have gotten progressively better but like the last series I am not what is going on with authors chopping and changing between first names and surnames with crew it is mighty confusing. To the point that after three books I am still not sure what surnames are associated with what first names and what roles the people perform. Anyway, it s a good read about mankind being accepted into an established alliance of other space faring species fighting a common enemy. Not brilliant or unique but a good story with some good characters.

Darkwar To be honest, I'm quite disappointed. The story is not really engaging and the main character is the new definition of a mary-sue. In more than 320 pages she has only screwed up once, and she managed to cover it up so there were zero consequences. Every single page I read how much better she is than everyone else and how she learns stuff in weeks what takes years for others and how much she owns everyone. There are entire pages where she owns everyone in one long winded monologue and people just sit around being owned. And yeah, she was born with a special gift, she did not really work hard for her awesomeness. And not only is she so awesome, it is totally amplified by everyone else being an utter fool. So far, for the main character this has been a power trip without an off switch. There are 200 more pages to go so I hope there will be a total plot-twist or she'll get her spoiled ass whupped HARD, otherwise I'll consider this book an utter failure. Oh, and so far I have not encountered one tiny bit of humor.

Anyway, it s a good read about mankind being accepted into an established alliance of other space faring species fighting a common enemy. Not brilliant or unique but a good story with some good characters. So just started book 8 and had been concerned about the direction the books were taking with introducing a new enemy but the author has woven it neatly into the main conflict. What I like about these books are that the main characters all stick to their roles and are not some "special" person. All are fallible, some have made terrible errors of judgement that have seen them disappear from the books and some are super brave but less capable and aren't afraid to realise it and lean on other more minor characters. So they actually work like a team and are not just dependant on the main character to always solve all the problems. It makes them real and relatable. The author writes good characters but his narratives of the situations are also well written and realistic and the situations feel real as do the consequences for the characters in them. Really enjoying the books TBH although there are some bits that are a bit of a trial in terms of dragging on but they are bits I think others may actually enjoy like the dogfighting between the fighters of the main starship. colfoley I think you'd enjoy these books.

I have started Syndicate, but didn't get far due to real life stuff. I love the Italian Renaissance too, therefore I have to play the one that plays in Florence of the Medici too one day.

"And he piled upon the while white hump, a sum of all the rage and hate felt by his entire race. If his chest had been a canon he would have shot his heart upon it." (Herman Melville, Mobey Dick)
Such an impactful line that speaks volumes into many situations.

One book (talk about 'dry reading......not dry, necessarily, but 'heavy'. 'There's that word again, 'heavy'. Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the earth's gravitational pull?" Doc Brown....) (Sorry).
One book that I enjoy, but it is heavy reading- a lot to digest, is Campbell's "The Hero With A Thousand Faces", the cornerstone of the STAR WARS Mythology, also written by another former Prof of Lucas from USC, Joseph Campbell. I read it for a Mythology class in College abuot 7 years ago now, along with "The Power of Myth" (his last interview with Bill Moyers, before his (Campbell's) death. It was recorded over three days at Skywalker Ranch)....what a powerful interview, both the book and the televised version. "Hero with a thousand faces" really helped me understand not just STAR WARS and its mythology, but world cultures and Myths in general. It speaks a lot of truth about life, about the human condition.

So I finally finished all ten of the books and would happily give them an 8 to 9 out of 10. The characters are great with no main character solving every problem and a true team effort even across species. The story is great with realistic villains but one thing that seems to let a lot of these Military Sci-Fi books down is they don't seem to be proof read which drives me absolutely crazy. When checking the authors Facebook page to see if any of his other series of books were a follow on it was a consistent piece of feedback. Seriously how hard is it to get someone to read your book for you!!!!!! Anyway it didn't detract from the books and I really liked that there was not a cheesy ending in sight, a hard won victory where major characters died. Also the books all the way through teased at a romance between the two major characters and the author kept it at a friendship which "practically" was the right thing to do in sense of their roles and the story overall. A very good and fun read,

So "Divergent" came up for me as a recommendation and was free. Not familiar with the series but aware of it so thought I'd give it a go and have been happy with it so far. I am guessing it is meant for teens and my first thought was my 16 year old daughter would like this so maybe that's the case but I am enjoying it so far but can't wait for the story to broaden rather than being stuck in the training etc. I am interested in watching the movie now and have already downloaded the other two books but the actress in the movie promotions looks far too pretty for how I envisage Beatrice.
