Want to get ready for Andromeda with a little TV? Here are a couple recommendations:
1. Voltron the Legendary Defender: The Netflix exclusive is a remake of an old 80's cartoon, but everything from the writing, to the animation and artwork, gave this a surprising epic space opera feel. This is a show that I feel closely resembles the LOOK of Andromeda, and I can't help but think Bioware needs to hire these animators to make a Mass Effect TV series.
2. Doctor Who: Yeah, you knew this was coming! What else can I say, a TV show about a well dressed alien travelling across time and space in a Police Phone Box? Totally worth it! And the unique worlds and aliens presented in the show help too!
3. Firefly: This cult classic follows a group of smugglers as they traverse across the galaxy taking odd jobs in an old and spunky ship. Although it didn't last long, I think what really sold the show was the entertaining dynamics between the team, which I think will carry over to Andromeda. Sure, our ship will be sparkly and clean and we aren't smugglers, but we're still a tight team right?
4. Star Wars Rebels and Clone Wars: I put these together because a.) they're from the same franchise, b.) they're from the same makers, and c.) they're both really fun and epic shows with a sense of adventure and character! I once heard someone describe Rebels as "Firefly in Star Wars", and I can safely say they're right!
Got any suggestions? List them here!

Babylon 5, every scifi fan needs to watch this show. Better than Star Trek, seriously.

Stargate Atlantis - the whole visiting another galaxy thing.
Babylon 5 - parallels to the Nexus as a hub of multiple species.
BSG - although that's probably not similar in story other than being set in spaceships.

The Expanse. They just aired the first two episodes for season 2. You may or may not have problems not hearing a quarian admiral in place of a certain political figure, though. But yep, great suggestion.

I've been watching ST The Next Generation on Netflix as of late. So dorky at times but always worth a laugh and other times it's just genuinely awesome because of how intellectually written it is, with a lot of ethos in the forefront. Patrick Stewart is great, except when he has to do romantic scenes (cringe)
I watched BSG last year but only until season 3. Great show with so-so acting and sometimes really great acting. I loved the execution of the themes set up in the early points but due to the ending I've heard about I stopped watching before that. There's a lot of elements on board the BSG that I wish Andromeda would take to heart. You can tell a lot of ME3 was inspired by BSG's militaristic style and definitely the arks of Andromeda, but I would also have loved it if Mass Effect had the type of romance scenes as with Starbuck where it's like a really cramped bunker and it's a mix of them having sex but also talking about things on their mind so it's not just a reward-scene.
I've seen one or two episodes of The Expanse. Dunno what i think about it. I like that it is new so it looks good but so far it's not really hooking me. I don't know what the themes are going to be yet.

"The Expanse" just returned to ScyFy with Season 2 in the US, last night. Any sci-fi fan who hasn't seen that one yet should check it out. I also enjoy a good portion of the rest of ScyFy's line-up.
"Killjoys" is one that surprised me. I didn't expect much of it, but I really enjoy the characters. The plot is interesting, though I accurately predicted the entirety of the first 2 seasons very early in Season 1. (I tend to do this with all shows, so it isn't necessarily an indictment of Kiljoys.) It's a story set in a single planetary system (the Quad -- a planet with 3 moons) and told from the perspective of a 3 person crew of Reclamation Agents (bounty hunters, or Killjoys), and occasionally from a few of their close non-crew friends. Their team bonds drive the story and keep them together as they get sucked into some pretty crazy politics and worse. I think most Mass Effect fans would find this at least reasonably enjoyable. I'm not sure how Season 3 will go. It might get weird. The first two seasons were good, though, so I'm looking forward to seeing what the writers do with it.

The Expanse. They just aired the first two episodes for season 2. I third this. Lot's of fun visual call-backs to the trilogy, but with a very different setting and characters. I'm usually not big on sci-fi themed TV shows but this one I love. And yeah, the actress who voiced a certain quarian admiral is in it.

Took me a couple of episodes to get into The Expanse too, there's a lot of world building to start. But it clicked by about episode 4 and then suddenly it was morning and I was waiting for season 2.

I don't know what the themes are going to be yet. For some folks it doesn't get good until half way through the first season. I liked it right away though but I'm weak for this type of genre. I say you give it a shot till episode 5, if you don't like it by then, move on.

Omg, the second person in the verse that liked Killjoys! I loved that and the Dark Matters, when they had it on free preview, but I have to wait till it's either on Netflix or we sign up for a channel that airs it and Expanse for me to watch it. Or, maybe, they will have DVDs.... normally do not watch TV, I prefer to play a game instead.

I'm usually not big on sci-fi themed TV shows but this one I love. And yeah, the actress who voiced a certain quarian admiral is in it. Shohreh Aghdashloo has one of the most pleasing voices I've ever heard. I really enjoy her character in The Expanse, as well. That's always iffy, with politicians. Yeah, Killjoys is great popcorn sci-fi. Also, Dutch is an utter babe in addition to a badass. Yeah, I was debating going back and editing into my post a bit regarding the tone of "Killjoys". It's a fun show to watch. Even when it's serious, it isn't super dark and grim. It's tone is generally similar to Mass Effect, in that it's focus is on fun, action and characters. It has its technical wizardry moments, generally via Johnny's quick thinking, and "Lucy" is a back-talking AI/starship... I never realized that, on paper, it has marked similarities to Mass Effect. In execution, it's very different. Anyway, check out The Expanse and Killjoys. That's my contribution to this thread.

It had a great plot in Season 1 that I saw, actually better than KIlljoys, but boy, did Killjoys reminded me of Firefly in terms, cool, cool and waaaaay cool. Bunch of off-topic Dark Matter chatter... I watch Dark Matter, also. I didn't mention it because I wanted to emphasize the other two as being the top options. Dark Matter really seems to lose its way during Season 2. I'm hoping that Season 3, assuming such is forthcoming, will be more focused.
In contrast, one thing I've really admired about Killjoys is that they've clearly known exactly where their plot was headed from the beginning. There have been clues from the first episode that pointed toward the current situation. That's how I was able to put it all together so early. (That might annoy some, but I don't think most people analyze shows to the degree that I do. Maybe some BSNers do!)
When the writers have their crap together, it shows. Season 2 of Dark Matter often felt confused. I will say that there were plenty of reasons to be hopeful that they've refocused and chosen their course, now. (They may even have had their course plotted all along, and they just didn't do a good job of presentation. That I'd rather not believe.)

Ah, I feel that Killjoy's overarching story was a bit more commonplace than the Dark Matter premise. I thought that DM was based on a comic strip, so I actually thought they had their ducks in a row. I still really want to get that Season 2 of both shows, as even if the plot stumbles, the characters are very appealing and fun to watch. Well, maybe in the summer. Anyway, both shows were surprisingly good small-scale SciFi entries imo. I hope more people enjoy them! Then, again, I am tired of being a fan of an obscure book or a movie, only to suddenly find that the entire universe now loves it. People used to look at me funny when I told them I am going to a reading by this niche fantasy writer, George Martin...

Being an older fellow I am going to toss one out there from the 1970's.
The premise is that a nuclear accident blows the Moon out of orbit from the earth leaving the staff of Moonbase Alpha marooned in space, far from earth, and with hostile and strange new aliens to encounter.
Space 1999.
Here is the opening to the first episode. The theme was great! The look very 1970's! It looks like a Mass Effect if it had been done in that decade.
It's all on Hulu!

Ascension!!! Mini series with 6 hour long episodes. Mankind traveling into space to find a new home cause they were afraid of what could result of the cold war. Kinda like fleeing to andromeda fearing the Reaper threat (well thats not really the case, but still) One of my favorite twists in TV. Its just 6 episodes I really recommend it. And please try not to spoil it to anybody. The twist is really shocking if you dont see it coming And dont read much about it, you really dont want to spoil yourself !! In fact, dont even read synopsis about it, it just ruins the whole experience... I know people like to get info about what they are about to watch, but this is the one show you do no want to do that. Trust me.
