Casual/Narrative. I more interested in the story the first time through, that's what excites me.

Normal, and that's where it'll stay unless it's ridiculously easy. I don't want to blow through everything, but I don't want to die, either. If my health enters red once otlr twice a mission I'm happy.

I picked veteran for the sake of the poll but I hope they don't lock out hardcore and up on the first PT, particularly if there's an achievement attached to them.

I usually go Normal in most games the first time but I always found BW games easier than the average. So I'll go Veteran to have a balanced challenge.

Normal and change it as required if it's too easy or too hard. I tend to go with what the devs balanced a game around.
Incidentally, not something that's ever been a problem with BioWare, but any game that locks difficulty when you start a save gets uninstalled. Refusing to start over in the otherwise superb wh40k Space Marine when I was stuck 10 hours in killed it for me.

Normal to start with. If the combat's fun, though, I'll crank it up as high as it will go.

Veteran. It allows me to play relaxed and enjoy the story while not getting the feeling that everything's handed to me on a silver platter. If Insanity turns out to be something better like the usual HP bloat and the game is good enough to play more than once, I'll be all over it. If it's HP bloat again, I'll stick to hardcore. Insanity's super bullet sponges piss all over the whimpering remains of my immersion.

I usually play on normal in my first playthrough of new games, but given gameplay will, all changes considered, still have similarities with previous games', and they having said that they're aiming for difficulty to be somewhere halfway between ME2's and ME3's, I'll probably start with Veteran/Hardcore.

I've played all the games on insanity (eventually), but I Always start at a lower difficulty. I have to enjoy the game rather than scream at my tv and punch a small hole in my wall with my remote (Yes, I did this while I was playing Mass Effect 3 on insanity during the battle on rannoch with the 3 geth primes. Fuck I hate that moment). So I'll go with normal first, you know, safety precautions .

Normal (or whatever the baseline/default is) once and then insanity thereafter (as soon as unlocked). As is tradition.
There's really not much point in playing veteran or hardcore, imo. You either play for fun or a challenge and if you want a challenge why go half-measures?

I generally play games on normal for the first playthrough. However, the Mass Effect games have always leaned toward the easier side of the difficulty spectrum so I'll probably start on the hardest available setting.

I usually put it on normal and flick it down if things start to get irritatingly hard, which depending on if i like it, can be first death, or ill get stuck for hours before deciding to give in and put it down.
Bioware games can go either way, Dragon Age I i put it down to easy while still in the hinterlands, Mass effect 3 i got all the way to London before putting it to easy, but then again, i wasn't dying much in that one, i dropped to easy in ME2 pretty quickly.
It's not even that i don't like hard games, i love Dark Souls/Bloodborne... for example, but i play bioware games for it's story and it's characters and anytime something starts to block me from that, it becomes less fun, so i don't hesitate to drop the difficulty.

I assume there will be 5 total difficulties, with 3 available on your first Playthrough. Hardcore and Insanity need to be unlocked later. I'm picking Veteran myself. How about you? Give me "easy" (or whatever they are calling it) - why? I want to experience the story first (I will probably come back later, in my second run, to look for a bit more of a challenge) and foremost Combat is cool and all, but I play RPGs to experience the story and characters (just like a book with you deciding how the story goes!) greetings LAX

Insanity, because given the size it's hard say if there will be a second playthrough (at least right away). Better to start tougher...you can always drop the difficulty if you start getting your ass handed to you. It'll be available right away.

I really hope they bring the Mass Effect 2 Combat System back where enemies on higher difficulties all have shields and shields protect them from CC. That made the combat not only more difficult on higher difficulties, but also more interesting, though it did mean certain characters went from extremely powerful to useless (like Jack)

Veteran (or whatever that hardest difficulty will be called) for my 1st playthrough. It's really just to get the achievement. When i'm done with that, casual all the way. I like to do the hardest first, because the drive to get though it is the highest the first time around, since everything is new and shiny.

Normally, I'd play the first time on normal, enjoy the story and meeting the new squadmates, and leave it to the second pt turning the difficulty up. But since this is going to be such a long game and the first pt is the only I'm sure it's going to be a completionist one, I'm thinking I'm probably going to start with a higher difficulty

Insanity's super bullet sponges piss all over the whimpering remains of my immersion. This (bullet sponge) hasn't been the case in ME games since ME2. Even scaled to max level on Insanity, you can drop literally every single "regular" enemy in the game with a shotgun to the head, included shielded troops.

That made the combat not only more difficult on higher difficulties, but also more interesting, though it did mean certain characters went from extremely powerful to useless (like Jack) I hope not. That approach is too simplistic, and makes most biotics useless, unless biotics are changed to once again impact shielded targets. As you point out, it also means that certain squadmates are useless and not worth bringing along. Reducing playstyle and squadmate options isn't interesting to me. I think that instead there should be a variety of enemies, from no protection to armor-only types. Some unarmored enemies could be glass cannons, doing huge amounts of damage if not dealt with quickly. ME3 had the right idea, where unshielded enemies would throw grenades. It just needed more armor-only troops, which they did eventually introduce via multiplayer.

Well, I'll try Veteran because I've always defaulted to Hardcore in the past but I don't know about the combat - might be too fast for me.
