As someone who had yet to finish Inquisition (struggling with figuring out what to do), I want to play as a warrior. What drew me to that class is that it can grant much better defense allowing you to stay alive for longer periods of time (and I could switch around my players depending on abilities I need), and from a story perspective, it kind of makes more sense seeing as how this could make my character more of an every-man in a fantastical world.
While I would prefer Sword and Shield look-wise, which warrior variant would you guys recommend, and what specialty? Any specific skills that I absolutely must get? Any strategies for using my party effectively? (skills they need, how I should set my AI?)
On a sort of off topic note: should I just have my teammates automatically level up? I mean, I could level them up individually, but I'm not entirely sure which skills are the best and I think I could respec my teammates if I think they aren't doing good in the battlefield.

If you are really looking for defense, then sword and shield is the weapon style you want. 2H warriors can be a bit fragile if you don't grab a lot of things from Vanguard or even the SnS trees. Also 2H is a bit more difficult to play if you have friendly fire on, since its best abilities deal FF damage. That said, I sort of like the 2H style more than the SnS style. Bear Mauls the Wolves in the SnS tree reduces all melee-range flanking damage to 1pt, and is one of the best passives you can get as a warrior. Turn the Bolt gives 50% damage reduction to ranged attack (includes elemental magic attacks like from Wraiths) and is also great. Turn the Blade is another 20% damage reduction for frontal attacks. Shield Wall is pretty helpful for SnS, and is one of the best blocking powers any class can get since it can block ranged. I like Shield Bash for good damage against guard and a combo detonator. If you have a barrier Mage who has Mana Surge passive, there shouldn't be any shortage of mooks to shatter. If you wanted to go 2H instead, the build I would recommend would probably be different early game depending on if FF is on or off. For the squad, I don't ever let the games allocate talent points. A decent build progression from most classes was posted by Matth85 back in the day, and was archived here: fextralife.com/forums/t188491/builds-matths-preskyhold-builds/I think most of them work pretty well with all the changes, but I am not sure the warrior bits were updated for Trespasser and the Horn of Valor toggle. Also I preferred, and still do, a different leveling scheme on 2H warrior. Otherwise I go with pretty similar progressions to what he posted for companions. As far as specialties for warrior are concerned, I don't care for Champion and can hardly think of a reason to run it especially in the current game state after the big nerf to Walking Fortress. I think Templar is the best all around spec for utility and damage, but 2H reaver can output a whole lot of damage.

Let me cast a vote for SnS Reaver- it is maybe the most fun I've had as a warrior. I know SnS builds are not popular. I was turned onto the idea by a guy on Youtube named 'NinjaFlips'. The key to the build is the Enhanced Belt of Urgency- which you get from the war table. Once your health threshold drops below 50% (easily done via Dragon Rage). You then get an increase in attack speed. The Reaver passives like Blood Frenzy (5% damage bonus for each 10% of missing health) and Terrifying Fury (25% chance to cause Fear of you Crit) and Fervor(30% damage bonus if a nearby enemy dies) and Scenting Blood(50% speed bonus when near an enemy whose health is below 35%) are all fantastic. The One Hand tree abilities have low cool down times. And you get three masterworks (weapons, shield, suit) with any combo of offensive and defensive masterworks that you like (I love Walking Bomb, Hidden Blades and Walking Fortress). The play tempo is incredibly fast- it's very addicting.

There was a recent related discussion, check it out here: bsn.boards.net/thread/4176/first-time-warrior2H all the way, unless you want to go 100% tank -- which implies downplaying damage dealing. If you are going for Champion, W&S is best, but for any other warrior run, I do 2H. The 2H skill tree is just more viscerally hack-and-slash fun IMO, and the animations are cooler. I mean, check out these action shots of The Iron Bull wielding a 2H sword (no spoilers). Kazaaaaaaa! A couple of Cassandra 2H:

BTW, if this is your first run, here is a starter kit I created for first-time players I created. I think you'll find the link in there, to the For New And Returning Players, An Early Game Guide (some spoilers) to be particularly useful. If you want to avoid spoilers, just set whatever quests that are in the Inquisitor's Path section to active and follow those to completion until you get to the really long cutscene that you can't skip (trying to avoid spoilers). Once you get past there, the game opens up and it will be more clear what you have to do.

The animations are also cool for s&s. Charging bull looks better and the shield smash looks better (especially dwarf). The best 1 handed weapon schematics/shields are also easier to get than the two handed. Plus you will survive longer
