I really love the facial expressions of her when the gun is pointed at her Yep, love that Asari. She'd better make it into the game 'cause we're already best buds. They really did a great job on the facial animations to make me like her as much as I do from the brief time she got in the trailer. <<<<<<<<<<(0)>>>>>>>>>> She can't be taken seriously as a squad member. You must agree it is so!

Everything in the trailer (aside from the obvious Space X and NASA footage) was confirmed to be in game. <<<<<<<<<<(0)>>>>>>>>>> The good news, then, is ME:A will also have a myriad number of armour types. I hope there's more variety than Inquisition had. Was really surprised by how limited in style the Inquisitor was. The followers made sense for what they were going for, but the protagonist being limited so heavily was surprising to me.

I take it you don't like said Asari 😁 Everything in the trailer (aside from the obvious Space X and NASA footage) was confirmed to be in game. I know. I was just saying that he probably doesn't like the Asari in the trailer based off his post. BTW, saw your Andromenerds podcast... Great stuff!

The Asari face after looking at that repeating Gif for quite awhile. Looks a bit off compared to how they previously were (slightly uncanny). Slightly more human looking.

Honestly, if they get the budget to do mocap for face/body animations, that would be incredible.

I'd be happy to have her as an important side character like the advisors in DAI. I dunno, perhaps, an adopted younger sibling or something.

I'm curious to see how well they map out the physiology for different races, to feed that into the engine and create expressions humans can't. I'm specifically thinking of Turians and their mandibles, which could be quite expressive if done well. At least Krogans have lips. I wonder if they'll still have funky teeth... <<<<<<<<<<(0)>>>>>>>>>> You're assuming Turian faces have similar flexibility as humans. I never looked at a Turian with that possibility. However, Bio is changing things again... new canon(s) and all. So flexibility where none existed before will not be a surprise. Actually, I'm assuming the opposite, hence my curiosity to see what parts of their faces are mobile and how they are used to express emotion. Garrus does have small amounts of flexibility in his mandibles. There must be some mobility or Turians wouldn't be able to talk or chew! However, it isn't specifically facial animations I'm thinking of. There's a fair amount of body language and eye movement that goes into interpreting people's emotion/intent and I'm curious to see how that plays into the new races as well as the existing.

Bio did mention they are mocapping everything because FB3 cannot use the Unreal Engine assets.... and this I consider a very good thing. Facial animations may just be software generated, if you go by the EAPLAY video.

They could use the animations from the past game. DAI was using some old ME animations here and there. Keep in mind just cause it was used in Unreal doesn't mean the original animation information is in a Unreal only readable file. It's not like once it gets converted for use into Unreal it deletes the original copy of the animations.
Hopefully they go for all new, or at least up the variety. DAI had better animations either way, and the lip syncing was pretty impressive even if some of the animations where old as balls.

The eyes...they actually look alive.
Funny people mentioning LA Noire I too remember at the time thinking it was some revolutionary shit. Well, I dusted it off recently and was surprised by how dated it's become. Each and every character in the game looks like their smelling a fart, all the time.
Mass Effect's facial animations are archaic but they stand the test of time. The rule of uncanny valley I guess.

<<<<<<<<<<(0)>>>>>>>>>> From Shinoni Yea they’re specifically trying to address the repeating animations in the last trilogy. It’s really to do with the limited memory of old gen. They’ve implemented a lot of new techniques for Andromeda.
And I was mostly talking about facial animation too. It’s a huge step up. Pleasantly surprised.
Link: techarx.com/mass-effect-andromeda-receives-uplift/ I gather this also addresses the idle animations.... about time too.

I would argue Mass Effect is less grounded in reality now that we've moved 600 years into the future and using really implausible tech considering it's 2185, and I know there are bloopers like Project Lazarus to bend the lore and such but this is on a whole 'nother scale but at least it seems they're trying their best to handwave whatever inconsistencies they can, so we can get away from the ME3 ending and the old universe.
Considering what he says about animations it's less than convincing considering what we have seen looks less than on par with prior entries whereas he makes it sound like it's better than ever, and you gotta wonder if they had to show off a segment of their "amazing animations" for an all-eyes-on public trailer why would they choose a clip to showcase dialogue where the animations look completely underwhelming?.
I don't think he's lying necessarily... he's just too close to his own work right now to see the gap or if we're lucky it really looks amazing behind the closed doors right now and what they had to show two weeks ago was just some ancient build with half-done animations. Who knows, but it sure would be strange to pick that footage to show off then considering their whole marketing, according to themselves, has been this secretive because they don't want to "overpromise" (quote Aaryn Flynn in october) and they've also said they wanted to avoid spoilers.
Whatever happens I just hope animations are passable enough that you don't sit making the Femryder face throughout the entire game every time there's a miscommunicated expression on the screen.
EDIT: I thought this was a new thread for some reason.

Completely agree. Facial animations we've seen of ME:A so far have been even worse than DA:I which was worse than ME3 which was worse than ME2 which was worse than ME1.
It's gone downhill.
But to be fair, ME2 and 3 are not exclusively better or worse than each other. ME3 has moments where it comes out on top of all BioWare games but then also moments where the lip syncing is off which was never an issue previously. DA2 has the problem of blank stared faces a lot and DA:O is also really basic.
But ME:A seems to be on a whole new level of "worse". I really hope they get it fixed somehow. The lip movements are just too wide so it warps the face when they talk in an unnatural way and that's not to mention the lack of "life" in the eyes because the eyebrows don't move enough and they don't have that little eye-focus twitch as in ME2 or ME3. They just look stone-dead at whatever direction they're looking in and that makes them look lifeless.
